THE REPLACEMENTS-
Tim
If bein' wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
This is actually the 2nd Replacements album I've got ("Pleased
to Meet Me" will be reviewed soon).
2 things make this band so great. The 1st is their influence - perhaps
the most important 70's American R'n'R band: Big Star (also soon to be
reviewed). The 2nd is singer/leader Paul Westerberg. Most of the time he's
the wild, smartass kid. But he's also usually tuneful, sometimes sensitive
and always enjoyable. And when these things combine (and they do on this
album) you get 1 hell of a R'n'R album.
So if you're you're the raucous type, check out "Dose of Thunder",
"Bastards of Young" & the bloozy "Lay down Clown".
Or, if you're into great enjoyable & funny tunes, listen to "I'll
Buy", "Kiss Me on the Bus" & "Waitress in the Sky".
But if you can appreciate a quiet piece, better pay special attention to
2 of the finest Westerberg quiet tunes: the lovely "Swinging Party"
& the achingly beautiful closing number "Here Comes a Regular".
All in all, "Pleased to Meet Me" is better, which
shouldn't diminish the fact that this is a gem of an album.
