His life

Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born at Groot-Zundert in northern Brabant, Holland on     March 30th 1853.  He got interested in art by his first job, which was working at his uncle's gallery in 1869.  It was called the La Haye branch of the Goupil Gallery.  Then in 1873 he was sent to the London branch.  Just two years later he moved to Paris and abandoned art and became a preacher in 1878. Only six years later he went back to painting and became an artist and spent the last ten years of his life painting 800 paintings and 850 drawings, which works out as one painting every two days.  In 1888 Van Gogh settled at Arles where he painted more than 200 paintings in 15 months.  Van Gogh only sold 1 painting during his lifetime called Red Vineyard at Arles, which made him very depressed.  In the last 70 days of his life he painted 70 paintings.

Why he cut his ear off

On the evening of 23rd December 1888 Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin had a argument in which Van Gogh threatened Gauguin  with a knife.  Later that evening he returned to the ‘Yellow House’ in Arles where he lived and cut part of his left ear off.  In the portraits of himself he has got a bandage on his right ear.  This is because he is painting himself looking in the mirror.
