"NATO Needs A Compass"

5-14-99 If you were put in control of a Tomahawk Cruise missile, and were told to fire it at a military target in a foreign country, would you make sure you were firing this deadly and destructive weapon at the right target? I would. But apparently NATO and the United States don't want to take the necessary time to do this vital task!

I want to make it clear that I fully support the US and NATO desire to end the ethnic cleansing occuring in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Slobodan Milosovic has the potential to enter Europe (and the rest of the world) in another world war and not only is it appropriate, but morally responsible that someone attempt to stop him before he gets that far. But those actions should be taken on with responsibility and a sense of accountability for any mistakes.

So far, NATO has launched scores of thousands of "sorties" against Yugoslavia and destroyed a large portion of it's military capabilities. But during that process, they have misfired their weapons against Yugoslavian civilian structures, civilian populations, the Kosovar refugees they are attempting to protect, and they've even launched a missile into the wrong country (Bulgaria). Before, and if, NATO continues its actions, it's needs to SERIOUSLY analyze the flaws causing these horrendous disasters and then decide how to fix them and if and when to proceed. Minor collateral damage is expected in any military action, but NATO's mistakes have had serious consequences and are no longer categorizable as minor. Their hearts are in the right place, but their actions are literally misfires.

If you agree with this position or even if you don't, but you want to get your message to the government of the United States, you can visit The House of Representatives website and learn how to contact your Congressional Representative. They really do listen to your comments! If you would like to get a message to NATO, you can visit their website and remember that it is your duty to make your opinion count! And as always, feel free to e-mail me. I may publish your opinion on this site!
