Vance Brand joined NASA in 1966. His first flight did not come until nine years later when, in 1975, he was assigned as the CMP for the historic American-Soviet joint venture in space known as the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) with fellow astronauts Tom Stafford (CDR), Deke Slayton (DMP), and their cosmonaut counterparts Alexei Leonov & Valery Kubasov. He later flew three shuttle flights: STS-5 , STS-41B, and STS-35.
