Beware Shampoo!

So...What is Ranma 1/2? It's a story about a boy (who's obsessed with martial arts) who falls into a cursed well where a girl had drowned. The curse makes him turn into a girl when touched by cold water, but he can change back to a boy in warm water. Ranma has also inadvertantly engaged himself to four girls and is constantly pestered for attention.

Ranma was engaged to Ukyou when his father promised Ukyou' father that he would marry her in exchange for his Okanmi cart (their livelihood). When Ukyou's father agreed, Ranma's father stole the cart and ran away with Ranma. Ukyou searched for Ranma in vengeance, but insted of hating him, she found that she still likes him.

Ranma became engaged to Shampoo (Xan-pu) when he beat her at a martial arts contest. Shampoo is a member of an Amazon tribe which demands that she marries a man who defeats her but kills a woman who defeats her. She tries to kill the female Ranma and tries to seduce the male Ranma without knowing that they are the same person (she eventually finds out but that doesn't stop her from wanting to marry Ranma).

Kodachi was part of a gymnist club. One day she fell off a roof and landed right into Ranma's arms. Believing that he saved her, she decided that she would make him hers at any means possible. She's a little bit off the deep end.

Ranma and Akane were promised to be married by their fathers (her other sisters nominated her when they found out about the curse). Most of the time, Akane hates Ranma since he is thoughtless and rude, but she does like him. Ranma thinks she is a crazy tomboy, but he also likes her. Unfortunately, neither of them are capable of expressing their emotions and controlling their stubbornness, and sometimes it seems like they will never stop fighting. Akane is a terrible cook and often acts like a tomboy most of the time. Ranma picks on her and calls her an "uncute tomboy"! Akane calls him a "Baka". That means "jerk" or something like that in Japanese.

But wait! It gets even more interesting! Shampoo also has a curse (she turns into a cute white cat). She has a shy admirer, Mousse (who is also cursed - he turns into a duck). Mousse wants to kill Ranma since Shampoo likes Ranma so much and ignores Mousse. Akane has a pet pig that, unbeknownst to her, is the cursed form of Ryouga, a boy who admires her (Ranma is very jealous but can't tell Akane since Ranma accidentally put the curse on Ryouga). Ranma's father turns into a large (but cute) panda. Other than that, things are pretty normal...

Ranma 1/2 is one of the funniest anime/"cartoons" that I know. I received the 1997 Ranma 1/2 Memorial Calendar for Valentine's day, but I have no way to put the pictures up on the internet. Sorry.

The original Ranma 1/2 series dealt with Ranma and co. in high school. There is a popular fanfic out about Ranma and Akane in college after they get married. Go to the DnR site.
