Matches to remember


Down the years, Dundee United have produced many performances ranging from the good, through the bad, to the downright disastrous. On occassion, however, everything has come together and a truly memorable performance produced. Here are some of those glory games...

18 August, 1909

Dundee Hibernian 1 v 1 Edinburgh Hibernian

Dundee Hibs: Brady; Hannan, Gallacher; Strachan, Ramsey, Boland; Flood, McDermott, Docherty, Dailly and Brown.

This friendly was Dundee Hibernian's first ever match.

15 August, 1925

Raith Rovers 4 v 2 Dundee United

United: Paterson; Kay, McBride; Campbell, D. Walker, J. Walker; T. Simpson, J. Simpson, Howieson, Bauld and McDonald.

This was United's first ever match in the top division.

30 April, 1960

Dundee United 1 v 0 Berwick Rangers

United: Brown; Graham, MacFayden; Neilson, Yeats, Fraser; Norris, Gillespie, Campbell, Irvine and Ormond.

United clinched promotion to Division One for the first time in 28 years with this famous Tannadice victory, and never left the top division thereafter until 1995.

25 October, 1966

Barcelona 1 v 2 Dundee Unitedd

United: Davie; Millar, Briggs; Neilson, Smith, Wing; Seemann, Hainey, Mitchell, Gillespie, Persson.

16 November, 1966

Dundee United 2 v 0 Barcelona

United: Davie; Millar, Briggs; Neilson, Smith, Wing; Seeman, Hainey, Mitchell, Gilllespie, Persson.

These two Fairs Cup victories shocked the footballing world across Europe, and indeed United would repeat the double win some twenty-one years later!

12 December, 1979

Dundee United 3 v 0 Aberdeen

United: McAlpine; Stark, Kopel; Fleimng, Hegarty, Narey; Bannon, Sturrock, Holt, Hegarty, Kirkwood. Subs: Fleming, Murray.

The 1979-80 League Cup victory at Dens Park - United's first ever major trophy.

6 December, 1980

Dundee United 3 v 0 Dundee

United: McAlpine; Holt, Kopel; Phillip, Hegarty, Narey; Bannon, Payne, Pettigrew, Sturrock, Dodds. Subs: Kirkwood, Stark.

The League Cup retained, the club's second ever major trophy coming at the same ground within twelve months of the first.

3 November, 1981

Dundee United 5 v 0 Borussia Moenchengladbach

United: McAlpine; Holt, Murray; Gough, Hegarty, Narey; Bannon, Kirkwood, Milne, Sturrock, Dodds.

Regarded by many who were there as United's finest ever performance, with 5 goals to overcome a 2-0 first leg deficit,including a 45-yard solo goal by Eamonn Bannon to finish the match.

14 May, 1983

Dundee 1 v 2 Dundee United

United: McAlpine, Stark, Malpas, Gough, Hegarty, Narey, Bannon, Milne, Kirkwood, Sturrock, Dodds.

This victory clinched the league championship for the one and only time in United's history. With Celtic and Aberdeen in the running, United needed a victory - and got one, courtesy of two first half goals from Ralph Milne and Eamonn Bannon. Ferguson pulled one back before half time, but United hung on for a famous victory.

21 May, 1994

Dundee United 1 v 0 Rangers

United: Van de Kamp, Cleland, Malpas, McInally, Petric, Welsh, Bowman, Hannah, MacLaren, Brewster, Dailly. Subs: Bollan, Nixon.

United's first ever Scottish Cup victory, humbling treble-chasing Rangers at Hampden thanks to Craig Brewster's 47th minute goal.

Whilst Tommy McLean's great season of 1996-97 sadly ended trophyless, one particularly sweet moment was the 2-0 victory in March over the team we all love to hate, Glasgow Rangers, or the Huns as they are more commonly known.
