The written record of the family Majláth, or Mailáth de Székhely starts with Nicholas (Miklós). He was born in 1611 in Transylvania, in the county of Csík.
He is the first known ancestor from whom the Mailáth de Székhely family descended in an unbroken line. He was the first family member who used the predicatum or title of "de Székhely".
Nicholas was educated at Nagyszombat in a College run by the Jesuit Fathers and later at the Pázmány Péter University. In the annual records of the College, his name in 1628 is recorded as "Nicolaus Szentsimonj, Ungarus, Transylvanus, Nobilis." He is recorded the same way in 1629 and 1630. In 1631, however, he is recorded as "Nicolaus Székely, Ungarus, Transylvanus, Nobilis". (Nagyszombat, Pozsony, Hungary is now Trnava, Slovakia.)
The map shows Zavar (bottom right hand corner) where the Székhelyi Mailáth were buried in the family's crypt not far from Nagyszombat.

In 1636, in the Pázmány Péter University Central records his name is "Nicolaus Székhely Transylvanus de Kápolnaszegh", whilst in 1637 he is recorded as "Nicolaus Szökely Transylvanus de Kápolnaszeg".
To make matters a bit more complicated, in the records kept by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, he is recorded as "Nicolaus Székely", in the same way he is recorded in the yearbook kept in the Office of the Rector as a person who was admitted to the degree of Baccallaurea.
In 1638, when the degree of "Magister" was conferred on him, he was recorded as "Nicolaus Székely alias Mayládi, Nob. Transylvan.". However, in the documents of 1640 of the Archdiocese of Esztergom, he is referred to as "Székely alias Majláth Nicolai".
The name of his doctoral dissertation (still in the University Library) is "Nicolaus Székhelyi", whilst the name on his doctoral degree document, dated 11 November 1642, reads "Nobilis, Excellens ac Doctissimus Nicolaus Maylád de Székhely".
On the Royal Warrant, dated 22 April
1643, reaffirming his nobility and granting him a new coat of
arms the name is "Nicolaus Maylád de Székhely". He
was also allowed to use a red seal, which apparently was then a
privilege.
How the spelling altered from Maylád to Mailáth is not quite clear, but on later documents whilst Nicolaus was the secretary to the Chief Justice between 1646 and 1649, and to the Cardinal Prince-Primate (Cardinal Kolonics) between 1650 and 1673 his signature was "Nicolaus Mailáth".
After 1673 he was both "causarum regalium director", translated verbatim "Director of the King's Business" and "Sacrae Regni Coronae Fiscalis", or roughly translated "Crown Solicitor".
He died in 1685. His wife was Mária Justina Ereöss de Világosvár, and they had two sons, Tamás (Thomas) and Boldizsár (Balthasar), born in Pozsony (now Bratislava, Slovakia) in 1656. Tamás married Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Sántha and had one son who died without issue, and two daughters.
