THE TWO MAIN HUMANISTIC SYSTEMS IN OPERATION
There are Two main Systems of Humanism in operation, not only in "the world" but also in the Church. Because they are Humanistic Systems, they are of man. And they are Two main Systems of Thinking. What are these Two Systems?
They are the System of Rationalism, and the System of Empiricism. Both are based on Greek thought.
We will examine each in turn.
Cogito ergo sum!
I think therefore I am!
Rationalism involves mans' intellect over all. His Reason. together with Logic.
This System led to "The Age of Enlightenment" or "The Age of Reason".
2. EMPIRICISM
Empiricism is a System of thinking based on our senses. Touch, taste. sight, smell and hearing. Everything becomes either valid or invalid, not by argument (Rationailsm or Logic), but by observation, experiment and "experiences" and later it became how one simply felt about things.
This System led to "The Age of Romanticism".
HOW THESE TWO HUMANISTIC SYSTEMS ARE CARRIED INTO THE CHURCHES
The Rationalistic System emphasizes studying doctrine and theology, sometimes as a form of worship. Persons in these type denominations would be called "enlightened", "knowledgeable" or even "brainy". They reject all the emotional outright. They base their theological arguments on Rationalism, logic and intellectual proofs.
The Empirical or Romantic System, on the other hand, emphasizes "feelings" within their denominations. An enotional "experience" is all to them. "If you can't feel it you ain't got it" type preaching. They reject the study of doctrines and intellectual theologians as a rule. We could say they are based primarily on the "feelings" or Romanticism.
USUALLY, THESE TWO TYPE DENOMINATIONS ARE IN RADICAL DISAGREEMENT WITH EACH OTHER
The "Enlightenment-style" denominations are against the "Romantic-style" denominations and vice-versa. The Rationalistic denominations, because they reject the emotions, reject the Empirical or Romantic denominations as "way too emotional". The Rationalists may refer to them as "holy rollers", "tongues talkers", "spiritual idiots", or worse.
The Empirical or "Romantic" denominations react against the Rationalistic denominations calling them "cold and dead churches", "without love or compassion" or "lacking the spirit". They say "no one needs any doctrine they just need Jesus" or "We just need to love everybody and forget about doctrines". They identify the Rationalistic denominations as a "head belief" only. They claim to have a "heart belief"[1] which they say justifies emotions as central, by their interpretation of Scripture.
Both are convinced they are right, but each one is using a Humanistic Systems to interpret Theology. Since they are both so caught-up in Humanistic Systems (Rationalism or Romanticism) it seldom occurs to them that they could both be wrong.[2]
WHAT IS THE ANSWER?
The answer is to reject both Humanistic Systems. This is because these two Humanistic Systems are inherently incompatible as absolutes.
Parents should be nade especially aware of this and teach their children.[3]
Should doctrine be studied? Yes. But why? Not to show intellectual prowess or the ability to win arguments and debates, but to show our Loving Obedience to the True Faith. As for the Ratioanalists, the proper application of intellectual ability is to have it mixed with Divine Faith, something unbelievers cannot do; and so they remain in Humanistic Rationalism. Are feelings not important? Of course they are. There i8s great feeling in Liturgy, where it has its proper place.
Divine Faith is not a "feeling" or Romanticism, neither is Divine Faith a "dry logical argument"; wholly inellectual. Divine Faith is Superior to both these Systems. Its' Origin is not from man, but The Father.
With the intellect and the emotions both in their proper place (off of self, and away from all things Humanistic), in True Christ-Centered Liturgy both type groups can Assemble as One Church, and, "Keep The Unity in the Bond of Love".
