Mulder Coming Back?

Recent word from Chris Carter would further suggest that abducted FBI agent Fox Mulder is very much alive...and may be back for a potential 9th season of The X-Files or at least a second feature film.

According to the LA Times, while appearing at a preview screening of the Lone Gunmen on Friday night at the Beverly Hills' Museum of Television & Radio, a fan in attendance asked Carter if David Duchovny would be coming back next year.

Carter is said to have answered, "He has not ruled it out, but if he does come back, it would be in a more limited way than he's done for the eighth [current] season."

He added, "Banning anything unforeseen, [the series] should be back for a ninth season. But if it's not, the movie will follow right after the eighth season."

Harwood Talks 'Gunmen'

Bruce Harwood is talking about his upcoming Lone Gunmen TV series, and his role of John Fitzgerald Byers on the program.

While talking to Brian Hartigan for TV Guide Canada, Harwood admits that he had some initial doubts about how series spin-off featuring the paranoid trio carrying the whole load would work, saying, "we won't have to - you'll find enough deep-seated paranoia to keep a good psychiatrist in caviar for life."

The three principal characters area all played by Canadians, which has put the actors through some strange paces, as Harwood notes, "There's a line in the pilot episode where Tom [Braidwood] comments about fighting for `truth, justice and the American way,' and after he read the line, he turned to me and said: `Can you believe we're two Canadians saying this stuff?'"

Regarding his role of Byers, on the surface seeming to be the most normal of the trio, the actor says, "Byers must be pretty paranoid or else he wouldn't walk around dressed like that."

Harwood also takes issue with the show being described as something like "Mission: Impossible with geeks", saying, "Gene Roddenberry had to first describe Star Trek as 'Wagon Train to the stars.' Now, I ask you, was it anything like that? Not really. So take the Mission: Impossible comparison with a grain of salt."

As we all know, Sunday nights episode was the last until April 1st. From now until then we're going to have three episodes of the new Lone Gunmen show (which I hope you all watch) and a preempted sunday. I think last nights episode was i very /i good so here are some pictures from OS. I would have some from The Haven (which has the best screen captures I think), but once again, their picture page won't load. Click on them to see the full picture. The first one is great. The man is Kim Manners.

On the IMDB there is an interview with Jack Nicholson about The Pledge. Brittney Tiplady (Jordan Black from Millennium) has a small role in this movie. She plays the friend of a girl who was murdered. I strongly suggest you see this movie. Its very good.

The Truth About Scully's New "Rival"

Friday, February 23, 2001
As if an unexpected pregnancy and the loss of her longtime partner weren't enough for Scully (Gillian Anderson) to contend with this season on The X-Files, Sunday's introduction of sexy sleuth Monica Reyes (played by Annabeth Gish) may finally push the perpetually put-upon G-woman over the edge.

"There is tension in the beginning because I am sort of the new girl on the block," Gish tells TV Guide Online. "But my character makes it very clear that I'm of no threat. I'm not coming in to try and take over [Scully's] division."

GISH CLIP:

I made a Real Media clip of Annabeth on 'The Late Late Show'. Gotta love Craig Kilborn because he always talks about 'Duchovny' when he has X-Files guests on. The two (David and Craig) play basketball together, along with Gary Shandling. Anyway, a very endearing (imho) interview with Gish can be seen here. Enjoy! I'd also check all local papers for articles on the show and/or actors--it is sweeps after all :)

For those of you who don't know much about our new star, Annabeth Gish (for example, me) I looked her up on the IMDB. Here are some interesting facts about her.
Trivia: Attended Duke University. No relation to Lillian and Dorothy Gish. Annabeth grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She attended Northern University High School and graduated in 1989. She took a break from acting in order to gain a BA in English in July 1993. Her father is/was an English Professor. She is 5'8".
Some movies you may have seen her in are Double Jeopardy, Nixon, and Mystic Pizza. I haven't actually seen any of those movies, but those are the only ones on the list that I recognize.

Carter: Mulder's Return

Chris Carter is talking about next week's episode of The X-Files, which will see the return of David Duchovny to the series.

While talking to TV Guide Online, Carter hinted at what we can expect to see happen on the February 25th episode, saying, "We will figure out what's happened to Mulder to an extent. There will be a most shocking discovery, one we think cannot be happening but it is."

Regarding the eighth season's finale, Carter, once again, that the coming two-parter "will be a cliffhanger either for next season, if we return, or for the movie." Carter also let drop that the delivery of her baby will be "a subject of serious consequence."

'Lone Gunmen' Anxiety

X-Files creator Chris Carter admits that he's very worried about his upcoming Lone Gunmen spin-off TV series. Still stinging from Harsh Realm's abrupt demise while talking to TV Guide Online, Carter revealed, "You're talking to a person that got burned on Harsh Realm. I think the studio and the network don't really know what the hell we're doing [with Gunmen]. They don't understand three unlikely, geeky heroes being leads in a show."

Is The Truth Finally Here For 'The X-Files?'

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "The X-Files" may be joining the retiring TV shows "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Star Trek: Voyager," "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "3rd Rock from the Sun," according to comments recently made by the show's executive producer Chris Carter.

In an interview with TV Guide magazine, Carter said, "May's two-hour season finale will be a cliffhanger, either for next season, if we return, or for the movie."

In addition, in an interview with the Hartford Courant, Carter said the plan for the series is to turn it into a movie franchise but "it's kind of in the talking stages."

Without Mulder (Most of the Time), `The X-Files' Thrives

By Anita Gates
Mulder has a brain tumor? One that he neglected to mention to Scully, his longtime partner in F.B.I. investigations and unresolved sexual tension? And this was preying on his mind for a full year before he was abducted by space aliens last May?

These are thrilling, frustrating, patience- testing days for fans of "The X-Files." The Fox show's eighth season, which began in November, has been the first without David Duchovny playing Agent Fox Mulder, lonely but sexy believer in all things paranormal and extraterrestrial as a weekly fixture. Gillian Anderson, as Agent Dana Scully, M.D., has top billing now. And there's a new guy in town: Robert Patrick as Agent John Doggett, Scully's by-the-book partner. This month Mr. Duchovny appears (more or less) in three episodes, the last one next Sunday. Tonight: Who or what is the father of the baby Scully is carrying?

VCR ALERT:

OK, I don't know why this was funny, but it made me laugh. The Late Night TV Page has Chris Carter listed to appear on Conan on March 1, Fadboo emailed them and verfied that it's Chris Carter the Executive Producer and not the football player. Turns out it's our 'CC'. So you may want to tune in. [Mild spoiler warning for international peeps...] Wonder if I send enough emails to Conan if he'll ask CC about the whole nameplate/desk thing? That's really the *one* question I'd most like to ask him-her motivation in his mind as writer of the episode.

X-Files may be about to end

X-Files creator Chris Carter has announced the current series may be the last. The scriptwriter is concentrating on The Lone Gunmen - a spin-off about Mulder's computer-geek friends. He says if the new show is a success, the sci-fi series will end in May. A second X-Files film is planned for this year. "May's two-hour season finale will be a cliffhanger either for next season, if we return, or for the movie," he told US magazine TV Guide. Actor David Duchovny, who plays Mulder, is not expected back for a new series. He has agreed to appear in the film.

Millennium Movie In Air

Millennium star Lance Henriksen told the SFX Network Web site that series creator Chris Carter wants to make a movie based on Henriksen's Frank Black character. "Chris wants to do a movie based on Millennium," Henriksen said. "Probably not calling it Millennium, but using that character. He's talked about that, and it's in the air."

Henriksen added that he'd love to team up with his old friend, Robert Patrick, on Carter's other gig, The X-Files. Henriksen appeared on the series as Black in a crossover episode a while back. "I'd like to work with Robert Patrick in The X-Files, but nobody's approached me about it," Henriksen said. "I like Robert a lot. We did a film together years ago, but he's a really cool guy. I'd love to go back on The X-Files."

Moore Talks Evolution Fire

Julianne Moore--who co-stars with David Duchovny in Ivan Reitman's upcoming SF comedy film Evolution--told TV Guide Online that they escaped a recent set fire by taking refuge on the nearby set of a popular Fox TV show. "David Duchovny and I got into a golf cart and went to Ally McBeal," Moore told TV Guide.

The entire cast and crew--including gorilla-suited extras--fled Evolution's Manhattan Beach, Calif., set when a 15-foot fireball ignited a plastic tree, TV Guide reported. "We were literally chased out of the studio by a giant comic fireball," Moore said. "It was really quite safe. The fire department handled it so well, and all the guys in the gorilla suits were fine, because I was like, 'What about the guys in the gorilla suits?' I was really worried about them, because I thought, 'You're in a big rubber suit ... smoke inhalation.' It ended up being very silly."

Making Smallville Hip

(Note from Rachael: This news is mentioned because David Nutter is one of the original XF directors from the early Canada days)
Longtime genre TV director David Nutter--who will helm the pilot of The WB's upcoming Superman series, Smallville--told the RetroVision magazine Web site that he wants to take the venerable franchise and update it. "What I want to do with Smallville is do it in a way that's hip, in a way that's smart, in a way that's fun, and also do it in a way that is compelling storytelling," Nutter told the site. "The script is fantastic, and I think it's kick-ass, very smart, a lot of fun and very involving for the audience."

Nutter added, "That's another aspect that's important, too: I want to surprise the audience. When you look at something like three alien teen-agers in Roswell, New Mexico, a lot of people are going to laugh it off and not think much of it, but when they actually stopped to watch the pilot, it was surprising to a lot of people. It was touted as one of the top 10 shows of the season. That's what the key is: to try and do something that kind of balances the intelligence and also the emotional quotient to make them both very high."

Nutter said he looks at the series--which tells the story of 15-year-old Clark Kent--as a show about a young man who has a secret. "A lot of young people today can relate to that, because young kids have secrets and things they can't tell other people," Nutter said. "And it's about a young boy who's growing into a man. Clark's abilities are progressing, and they're blossoming in many respects on the show. In the show we're going to introduce Lana Lang, Lex Luthor and a more involved Jonathan and Martha Kent. We're also going to justify the mythology that you've heard about and thought about. There's lots of origin justifying in the pilot. I was really quite proud of the script and where it goes." Smallville debuts in the fall.

'Lone Gunmen' Talk

Dean Haglund and Tom Braidwood have been talking quite a bit about their coming X-Files spin-off series, The Lone Gunmen.

While talking to Fandom.com's Smilin' Jack Ruby, the actors touched upon a number of points regarding the coming show, as follows:

What's the show's emphasis?
Braidwood: Oh, yeah, it's quite different. It doesn't go into the spooky realm or the alien realm. It's aimed at the conspiracy realm.

Haglund: Urban myth kind of thing. All those stories that you've heard about - we go investigate. We're taking it from the newspaper that we run, The Lone Gunmen, so we're like investigative journalists going into these things so it's like Mission: Impossible with us three.

'Gunmen' Bumps 'X-Files'

The premiere of The Lone Gunmen is going to bump The X-Files, for one night. According to the Hollywood Reporter, on March 4th, the first episode of Gunmen will be launched in the regular X-Files spot on the schedule. Gunmen will then turn up on March 16th in its regular Friday night slot.

Millennium' Movie, Too

Chris Carter has talked about doing a Millennium feature film. So has Lance Henriksen. Now, X-Files and Lone Gunmen producer Frank Spotnitz has given his take on the potential project.

While talking to Fandom.com's Smilin' Jack Ruby, Spotnitz spoke of the project, saying, "You know, I dont know. I know its something that Chris would like to do and Lance Henriksen would like to do, so its really like if your audience is there to support the idea. I wouldnt say its impossible."

02/16/01 (but a few hours later than the last update)
The OS Message Board is definitely not shutting down. As you sign on, this message pops up.
"Attention board users - The FOX message boards will continue to operate without interruption. We apologize for any confusion caused by misinformation. Please post as usual.
Thank you."

Yeah, misinformation, whatever. They were going to close it and they didn't want to know.

02/16/01
Wait! Hold on!

This morning, at 1:38 am, one of the other moderators posted some semi-sweet news. Here it is.
"From: FOX-TV Moderator (MAGGIEX) 1:38 am
To: ALL 1 of 34
I've been informed via a new email that the X-Files board will =NOT= be going away. That's good news, of course! However, I do not yet have any information on details. Waiting for more information to share.

Basically, I'm as clueless as you all except for the assertion that the forum will remain.

FOX definitely is aware of the avid fanbase since yesterday afternoon. smiles. Your calls and emails have had them hopping. So, give them a break until we find out further information.
Maggie"

But we still don't know if they're staying with the same company, so if they don't that means goodbye to the moderators that we've grown to know and love.
I think Fox just got scaired that they might loose their fanbase or loose hits to their site resulting from people scattering to other XF boards that were set up when the news came out.

02/15/01
Tragic News!

The Official Site Message Board is closing down! It's official. Here is a message from one of the moderators.
"From: Patty Williams - Moderator (PMWILLIAMS) 2:53 pm
To: ALL
It is with a very heavy heart that I tell everyone Fox Broadcasting has decided to close their message boards effective some time today or tomorrow. At that time Prospero will make the boards read-only. Fox may continue the boards if they reach an agreement with Prospero, but they've indicated that they would like Prospero to moderate them if that does happen. Which basically means that Maggie, Kristin and myself will no longer be your moderators unless Prospero makes us an offer we can't refuse. But I'm not holding my breath. I hope that Maggie can get on here and post a note to you as well before the board closes, but if she can't I'm sure she'd say the same thing. I tried to call her to let her know about this, but she was sleeping and may not receive the email in time to say goodbye.

I'm really not sure if it was kosher for me to post this note, and The Powers That Be may delete it. Hopefully many of you will see it first if that happens. But I wanted to give you ample warning that this was about to happen, because I know many of you have become good friends with each other, almost like family. I don't think it would be fair for you to suddenly be cut off with no warning. If I get in trouble, so be it. What can they do, fire me? Grin.

It has been my absolute privelege to get to know many of you this past year, and I will miss you a lot. You can always email me at my personal email adress, at [email protected] .
Take care, my friends.
Patty Williams "

And then there was a panic at the OS. Hundreds and hundres of posts about the message board closing down. There was a riot (and I admit that I was part of it) so Patty posted one more time.

"From: Patty Williams - Moderator (PMWILLIAMS) 4:20 pm
To: ALL
Wow, sorry to start a panic...that wasn't my intention. Several years ago I was a regular in the music forum on NVN (an online service similiar to GEnie, Prodigy, etc.). One day I went to log on and NVN was gone completely .. no warning, no message, nothing. I'll never forget that feeling of panic, being cut off from my friends, and trying to find a new place where we could meet up again. So I didn't want that to happen to you guys too. I only hoped this small warning could give you time to figure something out.

Anyway as stated in my first note, Fox will most likely re-open the forums sometime soon. I'm sure they know they have a good thing going here. :) But Prospero will be in charge of moderating the boards if that happens, and I know nothing about what it will involve, just that the three of us won't be doing it anymore. And yes, this affects ALL the television show boards, not just X-Files. Also the message boards for the other Fox divisions, Fox Sports and Fox News, were recently shut down.
Take care,
Patty"

Happy Valentines Day everyone! I hope its a very valentinian day for all of you. And to anyone who is still bitter (like me) about Gillian not being nominated for The House of Mirth, I read a very smart post at the OS: Don't worry, she doesn't have the respect yet, but she will.

Gish Talks 'X-Files'

Annabeth Gish is quite happy about joining the cast of The X-Files in a role that may become regular should the program go into a ninth season.

While talking to Ian Spelling for his syndicated Inside Trek & Sci Fi column, Gish talks about getting the role of FBI agent Monica Reyes, saying, "I don't think you could be a citizen of this country and not at least know about The X-Files. I had watched the show for the first two or three seasons, even though I'm not much of a television watcher...So this was kind of a surprise when I heard about it, but it was a welcome one. The X-Files is obviously such a high-caliber show. I jumped at the chance."

Regarding her role, Gish says, "Reyes has a bent for spirituality. In the context of a science-oriented show like The X-Files, I get to bring in spirit dialogue. It's wonderful for me, because it's a nice intersection of a professional interest and a personal interest.

"I like to meditate. I'm very curious about religions. Being able to bring that into The X-Files is really exciting.

"As far as the dialogue, though, I had to fire up some new brain synapses to get the technical jargon going."

Gish' debut episode also features the return of David Duchovny. On that point, Gish says, "I didn't have scenes with him, per se."

The February 25th episode won't be her sole appearance on the show this year, as Gish reveals, "I'll be doing four episodes this season. I'm in episodes 14, 17, 21 and 22, and if the show does in fact return next year, then I'll be back for more."

Heading off any potential negative rumors, Gish also notes that her character was not created as a replacement for a potentially departing Gillian Anderson, saying, "And it has nothing to do with replacing Gillian. Chris even made a statement about that. It's just adding another color to the palette - Reyes is just another layer...It feels like a good fit."

X Marks the Spat

What's worse than being kidnapped by aliens on The X-Files? How about being harangued by lawyers for The X-Files? 20th Century Fox has accused the University of Wisconsin's science education site the Why Files (whyfiles.org) of trademark infringement. "The Website," says Fox spokesman Steven Melnick, "is clearly meant to capitalize on a trademark that we have a legal responsibility to protect." Whoa, says Terry Devitt, confounder and editor of the Why Files, which launched in 1996, "Anyone who has lived on this planet for any years can easily distinguish between the Why Files, science education, and The X-Files, science finction. I'm not sure what they're trying to lock up - the whole alphabet or the word 'files.' If it's 'files,' what about The Rockford Files?"

This is from EW.com.
In years past, the Academy has shown a refreshing willingness to reward television actresses who shed their small-screen skin and shine on film (see ''Mad About You'''s Helen Hunt). The TV star who broke her own mold most dramatically this year is certainly GILLIAN ANDERSON, who left ''The X-Files''' Agent Scully back at her D.C. headquarters to become Lily Bart, the New York social climber who falls from grace in ''The House of Mirth.'' Radiant one moment and utterly distraught the next, Anderson proved that her post-TV career is definitely out there.

spotlight on... Gillian Anderson

More than seven years of dealing with the eerie as FBI Agent Dana Scully on FOX's The X-Files has left Gillian Anderson a bit weird-weary. "I'm dying to play a sexy character," she says. "I'm dying to play a bitch [or] a drug addict. And I'm sure people think, 'What? Scully?'"

There's little of Scully in Anderson's portrayal of Lily Bart, the illfated turn-of-the-century socialite, in the film version of Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth. The setting is a gilded milieu into which one critic wrote, the 32-year-old actress "fits beautifully."

Although Anderson says it was "just a fluke" that she got the Bart part, she adds definitively that "I want to be in film." That means an X-Files exit for her come 2002 and more time with 6-year-old daughter Piper, who did alot of growing up on the set of the series. (Its creator Chris Carter is her godfather; Dad is Anderson's ex-hubby, Clyde Klotz, an art director.) "It's not as easy to occupy her in my trailer as it was when we was 2," says her mommy, sounding just a tad X-hausted. By mark Dagostino

Tea Leoni Talks About Motherhood

.c The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) - Actress Tea Leoni, who stars as a down-to-earth mother in "The Family Man," says her own experience caring for a child has been somewhat more harried.

I think I was caught off guard by the worry," Leoni said in an interview in Sunday's Newsday. "I remember saying to my mom, 'I don't know if I'll ever sleep deeply again.'"

Leoni, wife of "X-Files" star David Duchovny, gained 60 pounds while pregnant with her daughter Madeleine, now almost 2, and savored every calorie.

"I enjoyed every burger along the way," Leoni said. "Before the pregnancy, I was always appreciative of McDonald's and Burger King. I felt that, really, the people who know anything about food know that's delicious."

Leoni also joked about Duchovny's skill at shirking the more practical chores that go along with raising a child.

"Oh, my God, David. It's just the dexterity issue with men. I personally haven't found changing a diaper particularly challenging. But he's such a guy. Thankfully she's almost out of diapers," Leoni said.

"Perfect Couple" Cruise And Kidman Split

Blaming "the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly keep them apart," Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman announced Monday that they are separating after more than ten years. Their announcement -- and the stated reason for the split -- appeared to surprise many Hollywood insiders, who have observed that the couple have gone out of their way to remain together while pursuing their individual careers. Only recently they collaborated on The Others, filmed in Spain, in which Kidman starred and Cruise served as executive producer. (They have co-starred in three films.) Even their publicist, Pat Kingsley, who made the announcement, appeared shocked by the couple's decision. "It blew me away," Kingsley told New York Daily News columnist Mitchell Fink. "I had come to think of Tom and Nicole as the Holy Grail of marriages. I'm very sad about this." Several entertainment columnists decribed the announcement as a "bombshell."
(Note from Rachael: This is only mentioned here because Mimi Rogers (Diana Fowley) and Tom Cruise were married from 1987 to 1990)

Tom Cruise And Nicole Kidman Split

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman have split - claiming their work schedules made it too tough to stay together. After 10 years together as man and wife, Cruise and Kidman announced Monday their decision to separate. The showbiz couple met and fell in love in 1990 on the set of their movie Days of Thunder (1990) and married in Telluride, Colorado, on Christmas Eve of that year. Three years after their wedding the couple adopted their first child Isabella Kidman Cruise, and two years later son Connor Kidman Cruise was added to the family. In an attempt to ease the difficulties of keeping a high profile, often long distance relationship together, the couple worked on two joint projects - Far and Away (1992) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). They also made a rule that they would work in rotation, so whenever one of them was away on location, the other could accompany them, to keep the family together. Throughout their relationship, the couple have been plagued by reports their marriage was a sham, and in 1999 they won a court case against a tabloid newspaper that alleged they had sought the help of a sex therapist for their roles in Stanley Kubrick's steamy drama Eyes Wide Shut (1999). A statement put out by their publicist Pat Kingsley states, "The couple stressed their great respect for each other both personally and professionally. "Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time." This is Cruise's second attempt at marriage. A few months before meeting Kidman he divorced his first wife Mimi Rogers. They had been together for four years.

I read on the OS message board that Season 3 DVD is coming out late May and Season 4 is coming out at Christmas. There was also a link to Amazon.com but it linked me to nothing. Apparently they used to be up there, but were taken off because other people could get there. The post was a few days old.

There are some pictures from The Haven of "The Gift." Many, many Mulder pictures. So see them go here.

All I have to say, is thank god for sweeps month. Although "The Gift" was a very Scully-lite episode, I loved it. Check out these pictures from the official site. Click on them to enlarge.

Fire Interrupts Movie Set

.c The Associated Press

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Pyrotechnic special effects sparked a fire on a movie set, but David Duchovny and several gorilla-suited actors escaped unharmed.

No one was injured Tuesday morning as smoke billowed up from the Raleigh Studios lot during production on the DreamWorks film "Evolution." Scores of actors and production staff poured out of the lot, and Duchovny was whisked off to a shopping center.

The fire occurred as crews set off five fireballs 15 feet in diameter, fire officials said. One of the fireballs ignited the scenery.

Firefighters quickly put out the blaze. They had been standing by during the stunt in case something went wrong.

The film was expected to resume production Wednesday.

Fox Fined For X-Files Death

Cal/OSHA, California's occupational safety and health watchdog agency, fined 20th Century Fox Television more than $41,000 for a fatal accident last year on the set of The X-Files, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The accident--in which scaffolding came into contact with high-power lines--killed one worker and injured six others.

In assessing the fines, Cal/OSHA determined that Fox had committed three "serious" safety violations, including allowing employees to work near high-voltage lines without taking steps to guard against the danger and failure to properly secure the scaffolding, the trade paper reported. The agency also determined that Fox committed a general safety violation by not having a "written code of safe practices posted at the job site." Fox has 15 days to challenge the ruling, but a Fox spokesman declined to tell the Reporter whether it would appeal or pay the fine.

Duchovny Evolves In New Role

David Duchovny--star of Ivan Reitman's upcoming SF comedy film Evolution--told the Eon magazine Web site that the movie is actually a stretch from his usual duties on The X-Files. "It's different, and that's why I wanted to do it, because it's a totally different performance style for me," Duchovny told Eon. "I was looking for something different to do. The fact that there were aliens in it was kind of a drawback, but it's just a superficial coincidence."

Duchovny plays a discharged Army medic who joins Orlando Jones and Julianne Moore to deal with a meteorite that crashes to Earth with microbes that evolve at an accelerated rate. "Comedy's challenging, because there's really only one criteria, and that's if people laugh or not," Duchovny said. "Drama--people like it a little or they like it a lot, but you don't have to cry to like it. In comedy, if people aren't laughing, it's not successful, so you're really putting your ass on the line."

Duchovny said he's not worried about being typecast in SF roles. "Who's going to do that?" he said. "Is the great casting director in the sky going, 'Hmm? Did The X-Files, and now he's done this. That's all he can do!'" Evolution is set for a summer release.

A New X-Files Face To Come

The second half of The X-Files current season will reveal more about the character of Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick) and introduce a new character, played by Annabeth Gish, executive producer Frank Spotnitz told the Horror Online Web site. "You'll see more unfold about his character--who he is and where he came from," Spotnitz told the site.

Spotnitz added, "We sort of hinted at that in one episode that we saw, when he took out a picture of a little boy, and we didn't know what that meant to him. But now we're going to find more about him and people he knows. And we're going to meet this new agent, named Monica Reyes and played by Annabeth Gish, in episode 14, who has some history with Doggett. For us, it's exciting, because it's new things to play with, and it changes the dynamic of the show."

Gish's character will change the balance of the show, Spotnitz said. "She, like Doggett, is completely unlike anybody we've seen on The X-Files before. We'd never had somebody like Doggett, a kind of a working-class cop, before. And Annabeth is also a completely different element on the show. Reyes smiles, laughs and is a little off-center; there's a slightly neurotic quality to her. She's an FBI agent from the New Orleans field office; I'd say she's more a believer than a skeptic. So when you have Mulder, Scully, Doggett and Reyes, you've got two and two, if you will--if you still count Scully as a skeptic. While Scully believes in a lot of things, I still think she approaches things from that side of the world, as a scientist."

Fox Cancels Freakylinks?

Fox will cancel its low-rated paranormal drama Freakylinks, the Coming Attractions Web site reported. The show was pulled for most of the November sweeps period, but returned to the air this month only to see its ratings continue to fall, the site reported.

The last episode will air Jan. 26. Freakylinks starred Ethan Embry as the head of a Web site that investigated paranormal events.
(Note from Rachael: This isn't exactly X-Files, but some campaired Freakylinks to XF because they investigated paranormal things, and Freakylinks had XF's old Friday night time slot)

02/02/01
The X-Files executive producers Frank Spotnitz and Chris Carter will develop a feature film based on Jule Eisenbud's book The World of Ted Serios: Thoughtographic Studies of an Extraor, about the real-life psychic, the Horror Online Web site reported. Carter and Spotnitz are slated to co-write the screenplay for Miramax's Dimension Films, and Carter will likely direct, the site reported.

This is a letter to the editor

Some Still Want to Believe

After reading Michael Nelson's comments concerning The X-Files ("X-Files is Past its Freshness Date"), I wanted to add some of my thoughts.

Overall, I would give this season a "B." I have liked some of the stories in the episodes, but some are a bit of a stretch--aka X-Files. But kidding aside, there are some areas I would like to see improvement.

I would like to see Doggett a little tougher on Scully, and have a separate approach than Scully did the first season. Some of the dialogue exchanges have reminded me of the Monty Python skit of the guy who wants an argument, and all the other guy does is say the opposite thing (this is an argument--no it isn't--yes it is--no it isn't...ad infinitum). If Doggett is as good an investigator as proposed, he should have better ideas and explanations for what happens, not just say that Scully can't be right because it's too fantastic to believe.

Also, some of the leaps that Scully has made are just a bit too much. When Mulder made his leaps, there was usually an actual X-File that gave him an inkling of what was happening--he had some information from past cases (not always, but most of the time he did). I don't think Scully would make the leaps she does, even if there is some psychological reason why she might want to act like him now that he is gone. And her conclusions have all been right or close to right from the beginning. For example, her thinking a man could get hit by a car and not move--come on. Even basic physics will tell you that such a man would have to be so dense and have a mass so large that a car moving even thirty miles per hours could not budge him, let alone a car moving faster, especially to cause the damage to the car it did. (Then a shotgun blast knocks him off a porch?) It's just a little too convenient at times.

Even Mulder would look for the obvious explanations before making a leap, and have a question ready whenever Scully thought she had asked him an impossible question so that she was speechless.

Also, something that has occasionally frustrated me: I would like to see each episode build on itself in a more consistent manner. For example, the spaceship that Scully found in Africa, where is it now? The alien monster from the movie and episode 1 of the 7th season, what happened to it after it was in the water in the power plant? It's not that every little detail has to be answered. But the major ones do need answers. Just killing off Cancer Man (is he really dead?) does not end the main plot. Nor does a bunch of faceless alien renegades setting fire to those involved in the plot kill off the plot. Any alien race advanced and intelligent enough to travel through the vastness of space must have a better grasp on things than that. I can't believe Scully would forget things that happened in the past as much as she has.

And the only way I would want Scully's child to be Mulder's is if the Pusher guy was resurrected and told her to believe she never had the experience with him!

Overall, however, I do still like the show, and would like to see it continue on. I just want to see logical and believable jumps at explanations. It can be done with a little more effort.
