We have FX! It was scheduled to start on April 1, but it started yesterday night! This is the most exciting moment of my life! I have to adjust my time thinking because I'm used to watching FX in the central time zone at my grandmas old house. But now we have it!

Apparently Gillian was at an Oscar party afterward (she should have been nominated, everyone knows that). She was at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party at Morton's. Her dress is a *little* showy but she still looks good. I can't say anything bad about GA. She's my goddess.

The Oscar addition of Entertainment on page 16 has a little thing about Evolution.
...And after producing Road Trip, Ivan Reitman is back at DreamWorks, directing Evolution - with David Duchovny doing broad comedy. "But not stupidly broad," swears Duchovny. "Ivan would give me advice like, 'Don't suck.'" Now that's a tip worth spreading.
Also on page 56 there is a section for the movies that should have been nominated but weren't.
Enough about reality - let's enter the world of might-have-been via our Snub Poll, where readers selected from ourl ist of the criminally overlooked: Cameron Crowe (for Best Director) and Almost Famous (for Best Pictures) rocked to the tune of 52.1% and 40.4%, respectively, while Wonder Boys costars Michael Douglass (30.2%) and Robert Downey Jr. (32.5%) won the pot for best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. And who's laughing now, Julia? That would be The House of Mirth's Gillian Anderson, the people's pick for Best Actress (29.5%); Crouching Tiger's Michelle Yeoh stalked her with 26.5%. Traffic's Best Supporting Actress winner Catherine Zeta-Jones (35.6%) also had the Tiger by the tail, barely beating warrior Zhang Ziyi's 34.2%

Morgan And Wong Draft Visitation

The Final Destination team of James Wong and Glen Morgan told SCI FI Wire that they have turned in their script for After the Visitation, an SF film based on the obscure 1970s Russian novella "Roadside Picnic." The duo--who are also responsible for the TV series Space: Above and Beyond and episodes of The X-Files and Millennium--are awaiting word on whether the movie will go forward, they said in an interview.

"Our story is set in Kansas," Wong said. "The idea is, aliens come for three and a half hours, and they leave. ... There's a 20-mile zone where ... they hover over, [and] inside that area, everything's changed. Everything looks the same, but the physics change, and weird things are there, and there's dangerous things that people don't understand what they are. Twenty years later, ... they've left stuff that people don't know what they do--they don't know it is or how it works--and it's become ... collectible. But the zone itself is off limits to everyone. ... There's these stalkers who go in to get things to collect."

Wong added, "It's a very emotional story about a father and a daughter, and it's really wonderful. It's adventure. It's action. There's a lot of emotion. ... There's special effects." If green-lighted, Visitation will be produced by Morgan, Neal Moritz and Tom Sternberg and directed by Wong.

Wong is currently directing the SF epic movie The One, based on a Morgan and Wong script and starring Jet Li. The movie, currently shooting in the Los Angeles area, tells the story of a sheriff's deputy (Li) who must battle an evil version of himself across multiple dimensions.

Lots of 'Gunmen' Pix

The Fox TV network has released loads of promotional shots from three upcoming episodes of The Lone Gunmen.

This first batch is from the March 18th episode titled "Like Water For Octane." Fox describes the episode as being about an invention that could change the world.

This second group of shots is from the March 23rd episode of the series, titled "Three Men and a Smoking Baby." The episode features the group investigating a possible plot against a senator.

The last group of pictures is from the April 13th episode titled "Planet of the Frohikes." This is the episode Chris Carter was recently talking about that tells the story of a genetically altered, super-intelligent chimp.

Spotnitz Talks 'Gunmen'

Executive producer Frank Spotnitz is talking about The Lone Gunmen TV series, again.

While talking to iF Magazine, Spotnitz touched upon how the series will be approaching the often asked for mythology concept, saying, "The seeds of a mythology have been laid in from the first episode but you wont see it full bore until the final episode of the season. It will center around Eve who she really is, why is she living anonymously, what is her agenda and is she a good or bad guy. When you start to answer those questions, you start to answer and explore the larger mythology which will be completely separate from the X-Files mythology. Its a real world idea that speaks to the way the world operates now. Our thinking was let people get to know these characters and care about them first and then ask them to come along with you as you start to create a larger, fictional world for them. X-Files didnt get into the mythology until the end of the first season in earnest."

That new mythology doesn't prevent the Gunmen from being involved in The X-Files, as Spotnitz says, "They will still pop up on X-Files. It makes it all a lot harder to do because we have to somehow get them out of their day job in Vancouver and get them down here. We managed to do it this season and I think we can continue to do it. They serve a very good function on X-Files."

The producer also revealed that Michael McKean will be reprising his X-Files "Dreamland" role of Area 51 head Morris Fletcher for a coming Gunmen episode. Read the entire interview with Spotnitz by clicking here.

X-Files type things were referenced many times in the April 2, 2001 issue of People magazine.

The tv show is First Years is on page 28. Samantha Mathis who played Sophie Green on Harsh Realm. I'm not watching it because, truthfully, I'm watching something else on Mondays at 9 but I strongly suggest that you watch. People says that this series has potential.

Tea Leoni ismentioned on page 96 in the cover article called Healthy Bodies Are Back. "Actress Tea Leoni, whose daughter Madelaine is 1, agrees. 'I'm much happier with my body now,' she tod the Orange County Register in December. Leoni, 35, married to actor David Duchovny, also offered a quick rebuke to potential critics. 'If I'm not rail-thin enough for Hollywood,' she added, 'I'm sure they'll let me know and I'll be glad to leave.'"

XF was also mentioned somewhere else but I forgot to bookmark it and I can't find it now.

X-Files Creator Turns to Light Side

In a room at New York City's FOX building, Chris Carter, arguably one of the most recognized and prolific producers in television, is sitting back, relaxed and ready to talk. Outside, snow is falling, but Los Angeles native Carter, 44, dressed in a bright-yellow polo shirt and jeans, looks ready for the beach. With piercing blue eyes, shouder-length blond hair and an ever-present smile, he is surprisingly sunny for a man who has created some of TV's darker images.

But the truth is, this is the man who had his first job writing for Surfing magazine, and still brings a board to work at The X-Files. "I think it's interesting that he still surfs," actress Gillian Anderson, who plays the once-sceptical Agent Scully, comments later in a phone interview. "He's usually here [at the X-Files set] quite early and leaves quite late. He's constantly writing and re-writing, yet still comes to work with a surfboard on his car."

Gunmen Hits Ratings Target

Fox's The Lone Gunmen hit its target audience in its March 4 premiere, winning the 9 p.m. time slot in key demographics, Variety reported. But the X-Files spinoff placed second in total viewers to a movie on ABC, according to preliminary ratings figures reported by Nielsen. Lone Gunmen won its 9 p.m. hour in adults 18-49 (preliminary 6.5/14), adults 18-34 (6.8/16) and all male demographics, while placing second in total viewers (13 million). It dipped slightly in its second half hour, but held up well considering the tough competition, Variety reported. Its 18-49 rating is well below what The X-Files averaged in February, featuring co-star David Duchovny, but about on par with recent X-Files episodes that haven't featured him. Lone Gunmen will air two more weeks on Sunday and premiere in its Friday 9 p.m. slot on March 16.

An Homage Theory On Gunmen

Looks like The Lone Gunmen has good potential. I especially liked the subtle joke that was right in the first shot. (Which, of course, I'm about to explain, to show how smart I am. Oh, pipe down, Biff! Computer dweebs do this kind of thing. Deal with it.) Those who watched noticed the name of the company at which they were doing the Mission Impossible bit: "e-con.com." Standard dot-com name. Well, back in the '60s there was a best-selling novel/major motion picture called Seven Days In May, about a military coup of the United States. The codeword for the operation, Pentagon-speak for "Emergency Command and Control," was "ecomcon."

Both the book and movie are well worth your time. The film is considered a classic. Directed by John Frankenheimer. Starring Burt Lancaster (at his broad-shouldered, four-starred best), Kirk Douglas, Martin Balsam, etc.

Bring More Humor To X-Files

I am saddened to see the way the quality of The X-Files has fallen over the last year. It has turned into a rehash of Outer Limits and Tales from the Darkside. Can't the alien bad guys bring some of the human bad guys back to life through cloning, accelerate their growth rate and try to revive the colonization timeline? I also miss the funny episodes. I am getting tired of seeing Scully cry; it's unhealthy for her baby. Give her back Mulder, let her have a healthy baby, and they can all live happily ever after next door to the Cigarette Smoking Man while having occasional night visits by the aliens!

'X-Files' Future, Again

Once again, Chris Carter is commenting on the possibility that The X-Files might go into a ninth season. While talking to the AP, Carter touched upon the program's future, saying, "I want to come back if there's a way, a reason, to tell good stories. That's really the central factor."

Regarding the chances that Lone Gunmen might be picked up for a second season, which would mean focusing on two series, Carter says, "We're all hoping for the best and dreading it all the same."

Gunmen Shoots A Blank In Second Week

Fox's new X-Files spinoff, The Lone Gunmen, which debuted with strong ratings last week, was shot down by most of the competition Sunday night, losing 32 percent of its opening-week audience. With a 6.2 rating and a 9 share (last week: 8.3/12), the series, which aired in the X-Files timeslot at 9:00, wound up well behind ABC's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which won the hour with an 11.7/17, and the CBS movie Second Honeymoon, which drew a 9.5/14. However it topped the first part of the NBC miniseries The Lost Empire, which pulled a dismal 5.7/8. (Pt. 2 of Empire on Monday night did no better, averaging a 5.0/8.)

'Lone Gunmen' Future

Chris Carter is shedding some small light on what lies ahead for two upcoming episodes of The Lone Gunmen.

In an interview with Jeff Stark for Salon, Carter gave the premise of a rumored episode that will involve a chimpanzee. Carter revealed, "When we had done the pilot, I said every episode has to have an idea, and just the suggestion of it has to make you laugh. It has to be a government program with chimpanzees, a product of the Cold War -- trying to create a smart chimpanzee, the ultimate warrior assassin...What happens is that one of these chimpanzees is smart. And now, with the Cold War over, he's a remnant and he wants out of the program."

Regarding appearances on the show by X-Files cast members, Carter reiterates, "We've already filmed one with Mitch Pileggi, as Skinner, coming to interact with the Lone Gunmen on a case." Then he adds, "And we have another one we're cooking up for the season finale."

Carter Chats, Too

In a recent online chat for MSN, X-Files creator Chris Carter touched upon a number of points regarding the future of The X-Files.

What he says, though, may be a slight spoiler, so if you'd rather not chance knowing what may be coming, then move along to another story by using one of the links at the right.

Still there?

You were warned.

During the chat, Carter was asked if everybody's favorite Ratboy, Krycheck, would be returning to the X-Files this season. Carter answered, "Stay tuned. Krycheck returns in April in the season's fifteenth episode entitled 'DeadAlive.'"

Regarding a question of carrying on the series minus David Duchovny, Carter says, "We don't know if there will be a season 9 yet, so you are jumping the gun. My worry is always that the show would be boring or uninteresting with or without David. All we can do in either case is to continue to tell great stories."

As for rumors that Carter had another program in the works, Carter says, "I do have one more show in mind but my plate is full with The Lone Gunmen and The X-Files. That is where my focus is right now.

Producers Chat 'Gunmen'

In an recent and extensive online chat through the Fox TV website, Lone Gunmen executive producers Frank Spotnitz, Vince Gilligan and John Shiban answered a lot of questions, touching upon what lies ahead for the spin-off series as well as its parent program, The X-Files. Here's some of what they had to say:

Writing the ensemble Gilligan says, "The more we like them, the more we realize how unique each of their voices is. Byers is the voice of reason, the moral center of the show. Frohike is a curmudgeonly man of action. Langly is kind of a smart aleck. And Jimmy is a big goofy guy with a lot of heart. Yves, on the other hand, is a bit of a mystery at first. But we learn that underneath her hard shell there's something else going on." To read the rest of the article go here.

The Opposite of X
The X-Files spins off into the irreverent as The Lone Gunmen milks paranoia and conspiracy for laughs

By Mike Flaherty
This kind of thing never happens to Agen Mulder... Before the credits even come up on the pilot of the new X-Files spin-off, The Lone Gunmen, a teaser flawlessly re-creates the famous "vault" scene from Million: Impossible. Except here, the infiltrators are the titular conspiracy-obsessed trio, and their bungled attempt to abscond with a priceless new computer chip leaves one of them flailing helplessly in the air while the high-tech treasure is filched from right under his nose. Not humiliating enough for ya? The scene ends with the Gunmen - Messrs. Langly, Frohike, and Byers - apprehended by a clutch of thick-necked security guards, who proceed with a through cavity search.

Creator of 'X-Files' Lifts His Profile

Throughout his career, Chris Carter, creator of Fox's "X-Files," has kept a low profile, maintaining the sort of mystique that is common to the enigmatic characters of his hit science fiction series. Until now.

Chris Carter taught us to trust no one, but wants us to trust The Lone Gunmen

By Melissa J. Perenson

If there's a conspiracy afoot, chances are that Chris Carter is in the thick of it. From the producer's flagship series, The X-Files, to the darker depths of Millennium and the virtual reality of Harsh Realm, conspiracies and Carter go hand in hand. Even X-Files spinoff The Lone Gunmen--the latest series from Carter and his 1013 Productions--alludes to a government conspiracy. But unlike his other series, Gunmen is chock full of humor.

Humor fits the mismatched trio of The Lone Gunmen well, since theirs is a Mission Impossible-styled series of adventures and misadventures. Byers (Bruce Harwood), Frohike (Tom Braidwood) and Langly (Dean Haglund) were introduced in the first season of The X-Files by writers Glen Morgan and James Wong. Over the years, their alternative sources and hacking talents have proven a valuable asset to agents Mulder and Scully. Now they get to strike out on their own as we follow the escapades of these three geeky crusaders for the people.

Carter, who serves as one of the series' executive producers, took a few moments out from his schedule to talk about the genesis of Gunmen--and the future of The X-Files. To read the actual interview go here.

Gunmen Isn't X-Files Clone

Bruce Harwood and Dean Haglund--Byers and Langly of The Lone Gunmen--told SCI FI Wire that their upcoming spinoff of The X-Files will differ a lot from its predecessor. "There are no aliens, no fat-sucking vampires, no inbred brothers with their mom under the bed," Haglund said in an interview. "Nothing dark. It's more government conspiracies, corporate conspiracies, urban myths. We're fighting the Man for truth, justice and the American way."
Gunmen premieres on Fox March 4. "It's like the funniest episodes of The X-Files, only funnier," Haglund said.
"I'd say it's in the action-comedy genre, though the details are odd," Harwood added. "I'd put it in the same class as Wild Wild West."
"Or The Man from U.N.C.L.E. or Our Man Flint," Haglund said. "My wife says every time I wear a turtleneck I look like Illya Kuryakin."
"The premise is simply taking The Lone Gunmen--known as the three characters who helped Mulder and Scully occasionally when they were stumped--this is what we do when we're not helping our friends at the FBI," Harwood said. "We have a weekly newspaper known as The Lone Gunman, after the Kennedy assassination lone-gunman theory. ... And we investigate conspiracies of all shapes and sizes. In theory, every episode represents a story that gets front-page treatment in our newspaper." The trio is joined by newcomers Zuleikha Robinson as Yves Adele Harlow (an anagram of Lee Harvey Oswald) and their dense benefactor Jimmy Bond (Stephen Snedden), Harwood said.
Why no aliens? "I think it was a conscious attempt on the part of the producers and writers to differentiate the show from The X-Files," Harwood said. "Though our characters came around to the idea of UFOs on X-Files, when we first came around, we didn't believe in them, and we laughed at Mulder for believing in them."
Haglund added, "If we did include storylines about UFOs and aliens, we'd have to acknowledge Mulder's abduction and Scully's abduction and acknowledge the whole arc of the alien genetic takeover of the planet, which really doesn't say comedy to me."

INSIDER OVERHEARD: SPOTNITZ, BRAIDWOOD TALK GUNMEN

Last night, Fox rolled out the first spin-off from The X-Files: The Lone Gunmen, which follows the misadventures of those three lovable losers Melvin Frohike (Tom Braidwood), Ringo Langly (Dean Haglund) and John Fitzgerald Byers (Bruce Harwood). Unlike the frequently dour and downbeat series that spawned it, The Lone Gunmen will emphasize giggles over goose-bumps.

"The show is definitely pushing humor," says Braidwood. "It's a lot more fun than The X-Files. There's lots of silly action."

"It's not joke comedy," adds executive producer Frank Spotnitz, "and there are no punchlines or laugh tracks. There's a lot of physical comedy and also a lot of situational comedy, but not like what sitcoms do. [The humor is] truly arising from the situation that the characters find themselves in and the fact that none of them know that they're funny."

Of course, the series needs more than pratfalls. There have to be plots, too. But the plots on The Lone Gunmen won't revolve around the aliens, ghosts and ghouls X-Files fans are so accustomed to.

"In The X-Files, the bad guys are government conspirators hiding the existence of extraterrestrial life. That's not the case in The Lone Gunmen," Spotnitz explains. "Often it's some shadowy conspiracy that no one else can prove. People trying to make money at the expense of privacy, abusing technology."

Spotnitz has another, pithier way to sum up the show's storylines. "It's really very much Mission: Impossible with comedy," he says.

Time Warner Communications (Note from Rachael: My cable company, the same company which has a monopoly in this area) will add FX to its standard lineup beginning April 1 - on Channel 64 for both standard- and digital-service customers. FX offers reruns such as The X-Files, NYPD Blue and Beverly Hills, 90210.
The cable network also pairs with corporate sibling Fox Sports in airing live, weekly coverage of the first half of the NASCAR season. NBC and Turner Sports will provide a weekly coverage for the second half. More information on FX is available online at www.fxnetworks.com. To accommodate the additon of FX, Time Warner will discontinue Acion Pay-Per-View (Channel 103) at the end of March and move Sneak Preview to Channel 65.
(Note from Rachael: Yes! Its been so long that we've had to wait for FX to come to this area. It used to be that I could only see it when I went to visit my grandma in Wisconsin but she's moved now and doesn't get it so I thought I'd never see it ever again but then I saw this in yesterday's morning paper and I don't think I've ever been so happy. Well, maybe I've been more happy but not about getting a tv channel. Well... then again it was great to get the Sci-Fi Channel, and I also watched that at my grandmas before we got it. Hm... Never mind. The conclusion is that we're getting FX!)

He didn't give much information but overall I think it was a good interview.

Be sure to check out the e-com-con site. Remember, they were the company that LGM kind of broke into in the "Pilot." Its a very entertaining site. There is a link to it on the LGM homepage under a box next to "Jimmy's Shelf." If you look closly at what comes out of the box, it says "Octium IV." Thats the chip they stole! And look at some of the names on the employee list. Dr. Daniel Pendrell, Dr. Zama Ishimaru, Giovanni Escarpa and Suzanne Modeski. Interesting.

In March 2, 2001's Variety there is a note about release dates and changes. Dreamworks has changed Evolution's release date from July 13 to June 8. To quote 'C' who sent it along--"Woo-hoo! A whole month less to wait!" To quote Mulder "Bring it on!"

X-Files Picks Up Mulder Arc

The X-Files creator Chris Carter told Science Fiction Weekly that the next few episodes will deal with the ultimate fate of Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny). "As of last Sunday night's episode, Mulder returns," Carter said in an interview. "But to the shock and horror of Agent Scully [Gilian Anderson], he is not doing too well. In fact, the title of the episode is 'This Is Not Happening.' That takes us to a cliffhanger, which brings Mulder back for the rest of the episodes for the season."

Carter added, "I'll tell you that all of the remaining episodes, which begin in April, take place in present time, so people should not be too overly concerned, or should not expect the worst when they see Sunday night's episode."

Carter said it's been hard balancing the various old and new characters this season. "It's always difficult--even when you've got all of the elements, and you've got them all the time," he said. "This season, it was a different show in many ways with Mulder missing. We've sort of corrupted the dynamic. But bringing in someone like Robert Patrick [Agent John Doggett] actually created a new dynamic, which I think is great. Now, we're creating an even different dynamic for the show, with Mulder's return and the addition of Annabeth Gish as Agent Monica Reyes. So far our experiments have worked wonderfully. We continue to pay very careful attention to how these things are working, so that X-Files may go on to season nine, and we still maintain our ability to do what we have always hoped to do, which is feature films." X-Files May Go For Year Nine

The X-Files creator Chris Carter told free-lance SF columnist Ian Spelling that the show could go on for a ninth year. David Duchovny returns this month for the arc building to the season finale, "as a cliffhanger for season nine or perhaps even the end of the show," Carter told Spelling.

Carter added, "My preference is to do The X-Files next year, if we can find a way to do it right, to make it creatively interesting for ourselves. I think the stories are out there to be told, but when you get to the ninth year of a show, you need resources to keep doing the same good work. The costs go up. So my preference is do The X-Files next year, but there are things that need to be hammered out between all the participants in the process."

Gunmen Is Surprising People

The X-Files creator Chris Carter told free-lance SF columnist Ian Spelling that his upcoming spinoff, The Lone Gunmen, is already surprising people. "I can tell you that there are a lot of people in Canada who are still scratching their heads," Carter told Spelling. "They're trying to figure out how Tom Braidwood, who was a first assistant director on The X-Files while we were in Vancouver, is the star of a television show."

Braidwood is one three actors who play the show's titular conspiracy geeks; the other two are Bruce Harwood and Dean Haglund. They will be joined by two new characters played by Zuleikha Robinson and Stephen Snedden when the series premieres on Fox March 4, Carter said. "You need something to bounce the geek comedy off of, and that something is a straight man and a straight woman, if you will. But I have to say that Zuleikha and Stephen score on their own. Stephen in particular is not a straight man at all--he is becoming the fourth Gunman."

Carter hopes that fans of his other work will tune in. "I hope X-Files fans will watch it," he said. "The comic episodes we've done of The X-Files are some of the most beloved episodes of the 180 we've done so far. So I'm hoping people will come to watch The Lone Gunmen like they watched those comic episodes of The X-Files."

The Lone Gunmen
The three stooges of X-Files paranoia journey on a mission improbable all their own

By Kathie Huddleston
The truth is still out there, and it's up to those three investigative-reporting conspiracy nuts, Byers (Harwood), Frohike (Braidwood) and Langly (Haglund) to report it in the Lone Gunmen newspaper. Using their hacking brilliance and their inept hands-on investigative tactics, the socially unskilled trio seeks to uncover corporate and government conspiracies wherever they can be found.

In the pilot episode, Frohike, Byers and Langly set out to steal the Octium IV processor, a revolutionary new chip that promises to make computers faster and more powerful. However, the Gunmen believe the new chip is actually designed to spy on the users and steal their personal information. Unfortunately, their heist is thwarted by the brilliant and beautiful Yves Adele Harlow (Zuleikha Robinson). To read the rest of the article go here.

The Goof Is Out There

The comic-relief sidekicks on The X-Files become not-so-funny leading men in a slapstick comedy
BY JAMES PONIEWOZIK/VANCOUVER
As TV assistant directors' tasks go--riding herd on crew, wrangling stray actors--it was a pretty easy one. Tom Braidwood was an AD on The X-Files' first season when his bosses were casting a trio of conspiracy-theorizing underground journalists. They had already tapped Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood, actors from Vancouver, where the show was shot, but for the third character, Frohike--a scruffy older guy with the hots for Gillian Anderson's FBI agent Dana Scully--they were stymied. The episode's director, says Braidwood, "turned to [X-Files creator] Chris Carter and said, 'We need somebody slimy. Somebody like Braidwood." So they asked Braidwood. "It was one line of dialogue," recalls the actor, 52, who had done some theater in the 1970s. "I said, 'Sure.'" He stretched the line--"She's hot!"--into two by saying it twice.

DD IN SEASON 9?

The article from the LA Times mentioned above has the following quote from CC on David's participation in a season nine: "On Friday night, during a preview of 'The Lone Gunmen' at Beverly Hills' Museum of Television & Radio, Carter was asked directly by a fan whether Duchovny would be back next year. 'He has not ruled it out,' Carter said, 'but if he does come back, it would be in a more limited way than he's done for the eighth [current] season.'" Personally, I'm waiting for confirmation from all parties before getting excited :) or disappointed.
