David Duchovny's Grace Notes
Creating Episodes That Re-Think THE X-FILES

By Paula Vitaris
With the broadcast of "The Unnatural" and "Hollywood A.D.," THE X-FILES's David Duchovny revealed himself to be a writer and director of great promise. "The Unnatural," a warm, gently humorous, and ultimately moving story about baseball and aliens, clearly was the outstanding episode of the sixth season. In "Hollywood A.D.," Duchovny turned a Hollywood producer loose on a tantalizing mystery investigated by Mulder and Scully, and the resulting "movie" is one of the funniest spoofs yet of the show.

In the second season, Duchovny shared story credit with the show's creator and executive producer Chris Carter on two episodes, "Colony" and "Anasazi" (on the latter he also participated in the plot breakdown). Other episodes for which he received story credit include third season's "Avatar" and fourth season's "Talitha Cumi."

Several seasons went by before he began thinking about actually writing a script of his own. "I didn't have the surety, the confidence in my mind that I could write a teleplay," Duchovny said.

For those of you in the UK, The House of Mirth is showing on Film Four on April 21st. If I called something by the wrong name I'm sorry but I'm not from the UK.

News for the week of March 10 - March 16

Sorry about the late update. This is the last week of classes in Winter quarter and it's been pretty busy.

From TVGuide Online
How X-Files Lured Back Duchovny

So much for David Duchovny's supposed apathy toward an X-Files return. Not only has the actor agreed to reprise his role as Mulder for the show's May 19 series finale, but TV Guide Online has learned that, before X-creator Chris Carter decided to end the show, Duchovny himself expressed interest in getting back into the UFO-chasin' biz.

Here's the scoop: Earlier this season, Carter — still under the impression that Duchovny had washed his hands of Mulder for good (at least on the small screen) approached the Evolution star about directing the April 28 episode. His response floored Carter and fellow X-ecutive producer Frank Spotnitz. Not only was Duchovny interested, but, "He had suggested that he act in the episode as well, which was a big surprise to us," Spotnitz reveals. "We certainly didn't expect that."

However, before a deal was cinched, Carter decided to end the series in May. And when that happened, the priority shifted to coaxing Duchovny back for the two-part finale. "And what became uncertain at that point was whether David would still co-write, direct and act in [the April 28] show. So, the final outcome, as you well know, is that he is going to act in the [series finale] and co-write, direct, but not act in [the April 28] episode."

Natch, we have to ask: What's with Duchovny's seemingly dramatic change of heart? As it is, back in November, Spotnitz himself put the odds of Mulder returning at slim to none. "My impression from talking to him was that he still cares about the show," offers the exec. "He's still invested in it and certainly cares about [Mulder]. And I think he recognized that it was the best thing for the show and the audience [for him] to come back and give closure to nine years of the series. I think we all agree on that."

X-Finale: The Confusion Is Out There

by Michael Ausiello
Here's a puzzle even Mulder and Scully would be hard-pressed to solve: How do you wrap up nearly a decade's worth of convoluted and some might say downright undecipherable — mythology in just two hours? That's the challenge currently facing producers of Fox's The X-Files, which ends its nine-year run on May 19.

"The truth is, it would be impossible to answer all of the questions people might have," executive producer Frank Spotnitz tells TV Guide Online. "More than answering questions, the [final episode will be] about giving meaning to the story that we've told for the past nine years — giving closure not just to the hard plot of The X-Files, but to the lives of the characters."

Still, Spotnitz, who is mapping out the series finale with X-Files creator Chris Carter, concedes that tackling the drama's myriad of unsolved mysteries (Gibson Praise, those pesky bees, Scully's hairdos) will be tricky. "If you're really a fanatical viewer, the important questions have already been answered," he says. "But because most people aren't fanatical viewers, we're going to retell some things, and I suppose some new answers will come out.

Spotnitz Misty About X-Files

Frank Spotnitz, executive producer of The X-Files, told SCI FI Wire that it's strange contemplating the long-running series' upcoming finale. "Hopefully we'll be doing a movie next year," Spotnitz said in an interview. "It's funny, because you don't remember any of the pain now [laughs]. Because there was a lot of pain. But all the good stuff comes, and it's just been a great once-in-a-lifetime thing. I'm just grateful and lucky to have been a part of it."

Spotnitz added, "It's a Chris Carter series, so I can afford to be immodest, because I really do think it's a landmark show. And I think it will hold up for quite a number of years, because it had huge ambition both in terms of production and in terms of storytelling, and really achieved a high level of quality. I think it tried to be very smart and very adult, and that's why it reached so many people. Especially for what is essentially a genre show. Shows like this don't usually reach top-10 audiences or win Emmys and things like that. And I think people responded to what was our best effort to deliver a really high-quality show week in and week out. It's been a great experience." The X-Files airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will complete its nine-year run in May.

Press Release

Soderbergh's 'Full Frontal' to Open on Thirteen-Year Anniversary of 'sex, lies, and videotape'

NEW YORK, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Miramax Films has slated Steven Soderbergh's new film ``Full Frontal'' to open on August 2, 2002 -- some 13 years after his debut, ``sex, lies, and videotape,'' broke out in theaters and helped change the landscape of independent film.

``We were set to come out in March and then Miramax came to me with the idea of an anniversary opening, which I found pretty appealing,'' Soderbergh said. ``This is in large part because, if I were to make 'sex, lies, and videotape' today, 'Full Frontal' is very much the form it would take.''

``Full Frontal'' stars David Duchovny, Nicky Katt, Catherine Keener, Mary McCormack, David Hyde Pierce, Julia Roberts and Blair Underwood. Set in Los Angeles, it's the story of seven people with very little in common who are about to come together in a way they never expected. Like ``Day For Night,'' this is a movie about movies for people who love movies. ``Full Frontal'' is written by Coleman Hough and produced by Scott Kramer and Gregory Jacobs.

``'sex, lies, and videotape' was a pioneering film that helped define Miramax's taste and commitment to independent film and the filmmaker's vision,'' said Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of Miramax. ``What I love most about ''Full Frontal`` is that it continues this tradition, but takes it in new directions that reflect Steven's passions and undeniably wide-ranging talents. We're thrilled to be a part of it, and we love bringing it to audiences on such an auspicious anniversary.''
