               John Hatcher Sr.( Major) was born July 15,1750 on his father's
               plantation on the James River in Henrico Parish, Virginia. He
               enlisted and fought through the Revolutionary War from Georgia,
               having served in Colonel William Candler's Regiment, attached for
               a time to the command of General Nathaniel Greene. He was at
               the first seige of Augusta under the command of Col. Elijah Clark
               in the year 1780 and at the second seige of the same place in 1781;
               in a skirmish at Shires Ferry on Broad River and at the Battle of
               Black Stocks on Tiger River, S.C. under General Sumpter.
               (Source: Affadavit signed by John Hatcher, Sr. dated November
               12,1832. Manuscript File Ga. Dept.of Archives; also statements by
               Elijah Clark and William Candler.)

               In 1800 he was commissioned a Major in the Georgia Militia while
               a resident of Columbia Co. In 1810 he moved to Wilkinson Co. and
               settled in the Passmore District.near the Oconee River where he
               lived the remainder of his life. He died April 20, 1835, and is buried
               in the old Family Cemetery . A DAR marker was placed near
               where his grave was thought to be about 1936. The information
               contained herein was copied from a DAR application submitted by
               Hilda Strickland Jones, Xavier Chapter, Rome Ga. #455113.

               "The History of Wilkinson County, GA" calls John Hatcher, Sr. a
               Revolutionary Patriot, Senator, political, civic and church leader of
               the county. So deeply did he make his impression upon the minds
               of the people that though he has been dead almost a century,
               traditions of him are still handed down from father to son and for a
               stranger to claim descent from Major John Hatcher is an open
               sesame to the hearts of the people of Wilkinson County".
               According to family records he is a lineal descendant of William
               Hatcher, who came from England about 1636, and settled on the
               James River.

               He enlisted and fought through the Revolutionary War, serving in
               Colonel William Candler's Georgia Refugee Regiment, which was
               attached for a time to General Nathaniel Greene's Command. For
               both Commanders he named one of his sons William Greene
               Hatcher. After the Revolutionary war we find John Hatcher in
               Columbia County, later in Warren Co, GA, where the Indian
               troubles were drenching the Oconee frontier in blood, making it
               necessary for every able-bodied man to arm and equip himself and
               be ready for military service. His quality of leadership was such
               that he was chosen Captain of the 12th.Company of the Columbia
               Co. Regiment of Militia. In 1800 he was Commissioned Major in
               the Georgia Militia.

               He was granted 287 1/2 acres of land in Washington county for his
               Revolutionary War service by Governor Elbert in 1785. At the
               time this History was written in 1928, the property was in the
               hands of his grandson, A.S.Hatcher (Albert Sydney) of Macon,Ga.

               He was appointed as one of the Commissioners of Warren County
               Academy; in 1805 he was elected to the legislature from Warren
               County; in 1810 he had moved from Warren County to Wilkinson
               County and there he was appointed one of the commissioners of
               Wilkinson County Academy. Within a short time this academy was
               functioning and being advertised among the leading newspapers as
               one of the most desirable in the state. That same year he was
               appointed to the commission to select a place for the County Seat
               in Wilkinson County. He was elected State Senator from
               Wilkinson in 1812 and served until 1820, returning to private life
               on his Plantation in the Passmore District near the Oconee river.
               There he spent the remainder of his life and in the old family
               cemetery he is buried with several members of his family.(this is
               located on the present day road between Toomsboro and
               Milledgeville.) In 1812 he was an ardent supporter of Andrew
               Jackson and in 1828 was chosen a Presidential Elector. Major
               Hatcher was conspicuous at practically all of the Fourth of July
               Celebrations, this being shown by the old newspapers of those
               days. One celebration was in Irwinton and from a clipping in the
               Georgia Journal of July 14,1831 "many toasts were drunk with
               great harmony and feeling, two public toasts that were made by
               Major Hatcher "to Women-the only tyrants man is not authorized
               to resist" and "The nullifiers-may they be compelled to ride on
               packsaddles made of thorns, placed upon frying pans and
               gridirons."

               Major Hatcher was a good business man. He amassed quite a
               fortune, owning at his death, in addition to the 287 1/2 acres in
               Washington Co., over five hundred acres in Wilkinson Co. Ten
               slaves, livestock, corn, cotton, and other property.

               There being no Episcopal Church in the area, John and his wife
               joined Mount Nebo Primitive Baptist Church. Though the Church
               was no longer in existence at the time Victor Davidson wrote the
               book "The History of Wilkinson County", the old church book was
               in the possession of Mr.Reddick McCook. Robert E. Hatcher of
               Dothan, AL. also has a copy About 50 years is covered in the
               church minutes, 1808 to mid 1850's.

Reddic Knox served as a second lieutenant in the Wayne County militia, 335th district, 1830-31., also as a private in Capt. James Walker's company of Ware County militia in 1838 in the Indian War. A deed of gift appears of record in Wayne County from Mr. Knox to his son, James Knox, dated Nov. 9, 1850, conveying his home place property containing 656 acres in Wayne County, also all his farming tools and plows, etc., all his hogs and household furniture and 58 head of cattle, specifying the remainder of his large herd of cattle was to belong to his wife until her death (Deed Book "G", page 276, Wayne County). Census References: 1830, 1840, 1850, Wayne; 1860, Wayne (widow).

John and Nancy Knox were members of High Bluff Primitive Baptist Church for a short time before transferring their membership in 1845 to the church "on the Buffalo", identified as the present church at Kickox in Brantley County. He was baptized Oct 14, 1843, and she on Jan 13, 1844, and received into High Bluff Church, and they were dismissed by letter Jan 11, 1845. Mr. Knox was a private in Capt. James Walker's company of Ware County militia in 1838, in the Indian War. He also served other periods of enlistment during the following two years. Mr. and Mrs. Knox were buried in the Knox Cemetery near the Satilla River in lower Wayne County (now Brantley County).

Some records indicate his father was William of Careby others think father was Sir Thomas a Colonel in Cromwell's army (also indicted for treason in 1643. Others say he was son of Sir John Hatcher, soldier, scholar and one of the translators of the King James Bible. Wm Hatcher's origin is very uncertain.

The immigrant Hatcher became a successful planter and politician. He was appointed a "viewer of tobacco" by an act of the Assembly in 1639, a position of importance at that time as tobacco was then a medium of exchange.

Note: This being member of Parliament probably is a reference to the Bacon's

In 1676, William was fined ten thousand pounds of tobacco and casks for the part he took in Bacon's Rebellion, which Bancroft in his History of the United States says, was "the early harbinger of American nationality." The Hatchers, long before the Revolutionary War, were battling for the rights of the people as against the encroachments of arbitrary power. He owned three fine plantations on the James River: "Varina", "Turkey Island", and "Neck of Land".

It may interest some to know that "Varina", "Turkey Island", and "Neck of Land", the plantations of the early Hatchers, have quite a history.

These plantations were laid out by the Hatchers and about half a century later came into possession of the famous Randolph family of Virginia. Adams in his life of John Randolph, the Statesman, says: Turkey Island, just above the junction of the James and Appomattox Rivers, lies in a region which has sharply attracted the attention of men. In 1675 Nathaniel Bacon lived nearby at his plantation called "Curles", and in that year Bacon's famous rebellion gave bloody association to the place.

About one hundred years afterwards Benedict Arnold, then a general in the British service, made a destructive raid up the James River, which drew all eyes to the spot. Neither of these disturbances, historic as they are, made the region nearly so famous as it became on June 30, 1862, when fifty thousand northern troops, beaten at Turkey Island Bridge, and the next day fought a battle which saved their army, and perhaps their cause.

Bacon's Rebellion

Bacon's Rebellion was a short-lived revolt in colonial Virginia. It began in May 1676 when Nathaniel Bacon (1647-76), a young, well-placed Virginian, led a small army of his fellow colonists in combat against both the royal governor, Sir William BERKELEY, and the Indians on the frontier. The participants in the rebellion were motivated by a variety of concerns. Some resented Berkeley's growing personal power, others were anxious to strengthen the popular voice in the political process, and nearly all were opposed to the governor's Indian policy, which threatened to restrict their expansion into western lands occupied by Indians. "Heavy taxes had been imposed to build up the town of Jamestown.

Enforcement of the Navigation Acts, after the passage of the first one in 1660, lowered price of tobacco and raised cost of freight. In addition the right to vote
had been changed to allow only property holders to vote. Nathaniel Bacon was
elected by the frontier farmers to lead them. This in turn ultimately forced Gov.
Berkeley to remove to eastern shore of Virginia. Bacon then became for a time

Bacon and his men enjoyed some initial success. In June 1676 an assembly dominated by Bacon's supporters passed laws extending the rights of freemen and restricting still further the rights of Indians. Bacon died of swamp fever (malaria), however, in October 1676, and by January 1677, Berkeley was once again in control of the colony. "Berkeley was later replaced and returned to England restoring peace" (Collier's)

When Wm Hatcher died in 1680 the TWO surviving sons Edward and Benjamin "for the sake of quiet and peaceable selttlement and to avoid further suits and quarrels" divided the personal estate. Edward received the 650 acre "Neck of
Land Plantation" while Benjamin received equal acreage at "Varnia, Pigg in the Bole and Turkey Island". They gave their brother Henry's children livestock in the settlement.

From a letter to "The Stovall Journal" in 1993: In 1658/59 at Newport on Rhode Island Mr. Robt Potter acted for Mr. Wm Breuton, merchant and Mathew Burne of Boston to sell a ship or Barq for 300 pounds lawful money of England to George Potter, Wm Hatcher and Henry Randolph all right in the vessel Blackbird.

Legal papers from December, 1702 identify Edward Smithwick and his wife Africa. Paperwork in August, 1703, however, identifies his wife as Sarah. "Some Colonial and Revolutionary Families in NC (without reference to source) identifies Sarah as the Widow of Thomas Gilliam and that she was a Woolard before marriage. Charles Manning's research shows that she was a Godfrey prior to marriage and this is most believeable as Godfrey is a name henceforth used by this line of Stancils. She does in fact sign a deed with the name Sarah Godfrey Stancil. I have no direct research on this point.

Edward's will on January 21, 1715 lists his son Edward, daughter Sarah, grandchildren Edward, John, Martha and Sarah Griffin (this indicates a daughter married FNU Griffin), granddaugher Africa Smith (this indicates a daughter married Smith and is consistent with other research that Africa Smithwick married David Smith and they had a daughter Africa.), son Samuel. Edward's accomplishments include:

December 12, 1701 appointed by Act of Assembly as a vestryman for North Shore of Sound of Chowan, Chowan District. He was dismissed January 3, 1714 for age and infirmity.

"Hugh(1) Smithwick, Great-grandfather of Mary Smithwick Duggan, wife of William(2) Duggan, arrived in Virginia in early 1642, one of fifteen men brought over by William Eyres, who received for their transportation into the Colony '750 acs. Up. Norf. Co., May 23, 1642 ...upon an arm of th W. br. of Nansemond River, adj. John Garrett. Upper Norfolk County became Nanesmond County and is so known today; it borders northeastern North Carolina."

"Sometime in the 1660's Hugh(1) Smithwick moved from Nansemond County, Virginia, almost due South into northeastern North Carolina, to then Albermarle County, Shaftesbury Precinct, later Chowan Precinct. From the 'Book of Warrents and Surveys 1681-1706, Albermarle'(5) comes this record:
'These are in the name of the Right Honeble Ye Lords Proprietors to will require you to survey and lay out for Mr. Hugh Smithwike three hundred seventy acres of land wch is due to him for the transportation of Seven persons whose names are herunder and make returne of this Wart wth the Survey to the Land Office fail not as you will answer the Contrary. Later, during Edward's active life, he was just across this stream from the settlement of Edenton, which for a period of years was the seat of government of the colony. In the early years, with almost all communication by water, the Smithwick land was obviously well located."

Note from Liz Clark, 2/1/95- Nathaniel Batts was a party to this suit- it was claimed that he was first in colonizing and arrival in this part and North Carolina in general. This causes a problem, as Hugh Smithwick was clearly present 15 years prior to Batts arrival in the northeastern corner of North Carolina as shown on the sworn statements taken at the actual time by the Smithwick heirs, Edward and John. Without a doubt, Hugh Smithwick was one of the earliest colonists in North Carolina with his family's removal to old Albermarle and the Edenton area.

Came to Va. in 1640 with his cousin General Daniel Gookin. Served as a member of the House of Burgesses for the sessions beginning 10-1-1644, 11-20-1645, 3-1-1658,12, 1662 to September 10, 1663.and the session beginning 10-23-1666.
He purchased the land from Thomas Rolfe, Pocahontas' son, in 1652.

Bacon's Rebellion

Bacon and his men enjoyed some initial success. In June 1676 an assembly dominated by Bacon's supporters passed laws extending the rights of freemen and restricting still further the rights of Indians. Bacon died of swamp fever, however, in October 1676, and by January 1677, Berkeley was once again in control of the colony.

Jamestown (Virginia), former village of Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America. It is located in present-day James City County, on an island in the James River, southeast of Richmond, part of the 3816-hectare (9430-acre) Colonial National Historical Park.

Jamestown was founded on May 14, 1607, by a small group led by Captain Christopher Newport (1565?-1617), who was hired by the London Company to transport colonists.
Many settlers died from famine and disease in the winter of 1609-10. The survivors were encouraged to stay in Jamestown by the arrival of new settlers and supplies the following June. In 1612 tobacco growing was started. The colony prospered and became the capital of Virginia. In 1619 the first representative assembly in America was held here. In the same year, at Jamestown, the first black slaves were introduced into the original 13 colonies. The village was often attacked by Indians. In 1622, 350 colonists were killed; 500 in 1644.
Colonists rebelling against the rule of Governor William Berkeley burned Jamestown in 1676 (see Bacon's Rebellion). The seat of government was moved to the Middle Plantation (now Williamsburg) in 1699, and Jamestown was deserted.
The National Park Service and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (which owns 9 hectares/23 acres of the island), have excavated and restored the area. The Jamestown Archaeological Laboratory contains relics unearthed by National Park Service excavations. Jamestown Festival Park, adjacent to the national park, has full-scale replicas of early ships and a re-creation of James Fort (1607).

Bacon's Rebellion, uprising in 1676 of Virginia farmers against the colonial authorities headed by Sir William Berkeley, governor of Virginia. The rebellion was led by Nathaniel Bacon (1647-76). Among the grievances of the colonists were the Navigation Acts of 1651 and 1660, which forced them to trade only with English firms and individuals at prices established in England, and the intolerably high export duties levied by colonial officials. In addition, the colonists were outraged by Governor Berkeley's monopoly of the fur trade with the Indians.

Toward the end of 1675 the Indians began a series of raids on the frontier plantations of Virginia. Fearful of jeopardizing his trade with them, Berkeley made only a half-hearted attempt to repel the attacks. The colonists then formed an army of their own and named as its leader Nathaniel Bacon, a plantation owner and member of the Governor's Council. Bacon marched his army against the Indians on his own authority, defeated them, and then occupied Jamestown, the capital of the colony. Forcing the governor to give him a commission, Bacon led another expedition against the Indians, defeating them at the Battle of Bloody Run. While Bacon was engaged in this effort, Berkeley began to raise a force to fight him. Marching against Jamestown a second time, Bacon captured the city and burned it in September 1676. The following month, while marching to meet a hostile force sent against him by the governor, Bacon died of malaria. His rebellion immediately collapsed. The governor took revenge upon Bacon's followers, executing some and confiscating the property of others. Some historians interpret Bacon's Rebellion as the forerunner of the American Revolution.
