Nuri's 4Runner Profile

Sorry about the pop up ads!!!

This is an info page on what I have done/am going to do to my 1992 SR5 V6 5 Speed 4Runner.
It will be updated when I feel like it.
If I'm not updating it as fast as you want me to, too bad!!!!
As for out of date links, some companies change them faster than I change underwear. ok that's just a bit too much info!

I have done some modifications to my truck since purchasing it in July of 96. You will not find me boasting about how much/little horsepower my truck has, since I haven't thrown it on the dyno. But you will find me giving my honest opinion. Even if you think it sucks!!!

Tires and Wheels:

BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/As' 33x12.50x15     I had 35's for about 6 months then went back to 33's because my mileage and speed sucked!  Too bad cuz they looked good. I still have stock gearing, so until I have an extra $2500 to do it, the 33's stay on. I'm even thinking about going to 32x10.50x15 to get better mileage.

American Racing Wheels  AR-36 15" Tri Spoke.  They no longer make this wheel.

Suspension:

Trailmaster 4" lift kit.   Looks great.  No obnoxious coloured parts.  I don't know why people do body lifts? *scratches head*

Trailmaster SSV Shock Absorbers.  They seem to work well. They are almost 6 years old and no leakage.

Trailmaster Steering Stabilizer.  It makes quite the difference over the stock one that's no more than 1/2 the size

Body:

Bushwacker Fender Flares(to keep it legal) They don't have any images available right now, but they have part #'s and lotsa other stuff.

I take care of my paint with Mothers Car Care Products. Many people ask me if my truck is new because of the good condition of the paint. I use the clay bar twice a year and do the whole job with Pre Wax Cleaner, Sealer Glaze, then Carnauba Wax. The clay bar will make your paint feel showroom new!!   Trust me. Its worth the work.

All of my rear windows are tinted with 5% limo tint in addition to factory tint. Tinting was done by Trim Line3M . I have also tinted my front door windows with 50%.

Front End Protection:

Big Tube Bar Bumper   Imported from East Coast Bars in Australia. It is made from polished aluminum.(keep it clean) It comes ready for a winch.

I added a pair of driving lights from Explorer Pro-Comp.  My original KC's were stolen one night at a hockey game.  Now on the new ones, I have put Loctite Red on an extra nylock nut at the bottom of the mounting bolt.  Anyone who would wanna steal them now will have to heat the nut up to 400 degrees.  I tried to undo it cold and no luck. I suggest if you don't want to tack weld a nut on, to do the Loctite thing.     I put in 130watt H3 bulbs in place of the 100watt H3 stock ones.    I would love to upgrade to H.I.D. lights when they come down in price.

I upgraded the stock headlight bulb from 55/60 watt to PIAA Platinum Series Super White bulbs. 45/65watts draw with the output of 80/110watts. I find it rather important to see where I am going.

A new 3/16" thick skid plate was put in place when the old one wouldn't fit after the lift.

Engine Compartment:

First thing I did when I bought my truck was to have my lift kit and tires done. It was on a Friday just before a long weekend. They didn't want to do it but it's amazing what 2- 24's of beer will do for ya.

Second was to have the alarm installed.

I am using full synthetic oil. 5w30

Third was to have all fluids drained and replaced. When that was being done I added a little something extra. It's called Microlon. Its a one - time metal treatment that actually works.  If you have any doubts, check out their site or email me and I'll tell you about it.  I had an oil change done at North Shore Off Road. After it was done, I brought out all of the mechanics and owners of the shop.  I started and shut off my truck and had them hear how it sounded. I measured the correct amount of Microlon for the gas tank and added it.  I added the rest to the engine oil.  I started up the engine. Its RPM climbed up higher than it did just minutes ago. The computer kicked in and brought them back down to the regulated idle speed. 800RPM. I was standing out of my truck while starting it so there was no way I could have been having my foot on the pedal.  Everyone was really impressed with how that worked. As of the last "date updated "at the bottom, I have had no internal problems with the engine.

Oct. 96 - Installed a Borla Cat-back system.  It sounds great, even before the headers went in. It is a good (less expensive) way to gain a bit of power when used with a K&N Filter.  Borla Part# 14414. I've heard that Borla does not make this cat-back anymore. It's not on their website.

Jan. 98 - Installed a Downey 3.0 litre V6 EFI Competition Air Cleaner. It comes with a 4" tall 110 square inch K&N Filter. It really gulps down the air and sounds great while doing so. I have noticed a gain in throttle response over a K&N Filter in the stock airbox. But my 33" tires don't help much!! Downey Part#DOW1711-FI30.

March 98 - Installed a pair of Downey headers. For some reason the connector pipes didn't fit properly,so some custom bending and welding had to be done. Now I have 2.5 inch exhaust to the cat. The headers sound great. A nice rumbling sound can be heard while decelerating. I have noticed an increase in throttle response. It gets up to 4000 rpm faster than before. Downey Part # DOW1741-30.

Nov. 99 - I added an Optima Battery. Its a yellow top deep cycle. Model #D34/78-950.

May 00 - Replaced Timing belt and all other drive belts. 184,252km

May 02 - I have completely removed my Jacobs System and sold it to a buddy.

Spring 02 - I was looking into getting some Nology wires. After seeing a demo of how much electrical flow traveled thru them, I wanted them, but at a cost of close to $450CAD.  Then, Todd showed me about Magnecor Race Wires. (thank god!!) They have a website with a crapload of information about spark plug wires.  Here is some good info about wires

May 02 -  I decided to buy a set of  wires from a local manufacturer called Aurora Ignition Wires.  I had to buy a 91 distributor cap as my 92 had the small pin ends that go into the cap. The cap lines up properly on the inside but it is only mounted with 2 bolts instead of 3 cuz they don't line up exactly.

August 02 - my catalytic converter decided to blow itself out thru the exhaust. It sounded interesting while accelerating at speed when bits got shot out the tailpipe. The stock replacement was $800 from Toyota, so I got a Walker cat for $200 from Lordco. I have some pics here of what it looked like after pulling it out. What you see is all that was left.

Here is a plexiglass fuse holder mount that I had made for
the stereo and driving lights power cables. It is all loomed up now.

Brakes:

I have had a new set of Bendix rotors CNC cross-drilled and radiused. The advantages are increased cooling, decreased brake fade, improved wet braking, reduced pad wear, reduced rotor warpage.

I now have a set of stainless steel braided brake lines by Explorer Pro-Comp (DOT approved) Part # 7211.Used on the front and rear ends using DOT 5 silicone brake fluid to direct more power to the pads/shoes. Boiling temperature 500 degrees f. Cool looking purple. They took about 3 hours to re and re, then bleed. One negative thing- the hoses are too long by about 6 inches!!!   They needed to be tied up with a zap strap. Hey Explorer- look into this.

I also painted my calipers Ford Metal Blue. They look great behind my wheels. Inside them I installed a new set of Bendix titanium metallic pads.

I found that my brakes are much more responsive and cooler .

Stereo:
Seeings how my stuff is about 5 years old, the links are non existant, so I'll just post the Rockford website instead  =>  Click here

For my head unit I am using a Rockford Fosgate 8030 am/fm cassette CD controller deck. I have installed the Rockford Fosgate RFX-8061 CD Changer in the glove box.

Amplification is handled by Rockford Fosgate.
A Punch 160x4 (1997 black bbq model) runs the front and rear channels. Rockford Fosgate FNQ 1614- 6.5" mids with 1.25" aluminum dome tweeters in the doors. I also mounted the crossover on the door. People always ask me what it is. I tell them its part of the ejection seat mechanism. Thats usually followed by a confused look.
I converted the compartments in the rear seating area into speaker housings with another pair of 6" Rockford Fosgate RFP-1406 mids (Remember, I have a 2 door model.).
A Punch 40x2 (1997 black bbq model) takes care of a pair of Rockford Fosgate DVC (Dual Voice Coil) Punch10" subwoofers. In a ported box that I built myself.  Damn, I do good work.

All power mainlines on a 0 gauge from the battery to a splitter at the back of my truck. Then it branches to 4 gauge to the Caps. To maintain constant power for both of the amplifiers, I have installed 2- Stinger STIFF1MN Black 1 farad stiffening capacitors with digital voltage indicators. (part# no longer available)

Speaker wire and wiring is Rockford Fosgate. All of the installations were done by myself.

I am using the Dream Series RCA cables to connect the head unit to the amps.

The inner sides of the body panels were coated with V-Blok sound dampening spray to keep the music in. It also helps keep a lot of the road noise out where it belongs.

Alarm System:

I have the Avital Champion Mark 3 alarm system in my truck along with a Clifford Glass sensor microphone. I had the unfortunate luck of having some punks attempt to break in to my truck with alarm on and all. They cut my alarm wires under the hood. Lucky for me,security came by and scared them off. I didn't have a hood pin or a back up siren then, but I do now. In addition to that, I have all alarm wires stuffed into steel braided lines running from the battery into the firewall so potential theives can't just cut them. They wouldn't even know which one it is.  I've got superbright blue LEDs right beside the lock knobs on the doors.  They look really cool on a frosty, snowcovered or foggy window.

Navigation:

I am using a Garmin GPS 48 hand-held GPS. I have an external antenna that is glass mounted to the front window for better reception. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a hand-held GPS. Back in June, I figured out how to mount my GPS for temporary use. I went out bought some plexiglas did some measuring and came up with this idea. I mounted the swivel baseplate onto a 3.5 inch square piece of plexiglas. I cut another piece of plexiglas 1inch by 3.5 inches. I drilled 2 extra holes for 2 small bolts.  I used 2 wingnuts to attach the 3.5 x 1inch piece under the 3.5 x 3.5 piece.  In between the plexiglas pieces is the cupholder. I can't believe It took me so long to figure it out.

Interior:

Well I was hanging out with my buddy the other day and he installed 2 neon lights [$100/pair] under the dashboard in his Prelude. My girlfriend and I both thought that they looked good, so I decided to put some in my truck. I basically went to Crappy Tire and bought 2 fluorescent worklights for $38, wrapped them in a gel almost the same colour of a blacklight, ran the wiring and mounted them. They are wired directly to the battery and on their own switch. Easily done in less than 2 hours depending if you have a wire that has no continuity and have to track it down.....

Another thing that I did shortly after buying my truck was to upgrade all the interior lightbulbs from the stock 5watts to 10watts. It makes a big difference. Just don't leave them on for hours. Thats not good.

What else have I done???? hmmmm.

My truck has been used in the CTV Television Series "Cold Squad"as a picture vehicle.

Most of the serious mechanical work done on my truck was performed @ North Shore Off Road

My truck is Government Inspected.

My Truck can be found on Readers Rides, Sponsored by Off-Road Magazine

Things have have broken/worn out due to everyday use since I bought it July 29th 1996:

Left CV boot, universals on rear driveshaft, starter contacts (inherent problem), rear window regulator (inherent problem) timing and all other belts (done as per recomended).  It's all been fixed now, don't worry.
