Small-Block to Big-Block Swap

It's a lot easier than you think.

Here's what you'll need to keep in mind.

All Chrysler V8 (except Hemi) K-frames for B-Bodies (Roadrunners, Chargers, etc...) and E-Bodies (Challengers, Cudas) from 1966 through 1972 are the same, regardless of whether the car came with a small-block (318, 340, 360) or big-block (361,383, 400 or 413, 426W, 440). This means you will not have to change the K-Frame!

What you will have to change is the motor mount brackets. All you have to do is find the Mopar from a junkyard which has the same type of engine you are swapping in and take its motor mounts. If you are putting in an RB engine ( either a 413, 426W, 440) you can use the motor mount brackets from either a 413, 426W, or 440. The blocks are all the same on the outside. The same thing goes for the B engine (361, 383, 400). Just find the brackets from any other B engine.

The rubber motor mount insulators are the same for all (non-Hemi) Chrysler V8's, but you are going to want to buy new ones.

Starters and alternators are interchangeable between small-blocks and big-blocks. Distributors are not.Max Wedge

Intake manifolds are not interchangeable between the B motors (361, 383, 400) and the RB motors (413, 426W, 440) but heads, cams and exhaust manifolds and headers are.

Exhaust manifolds and headers which will fit a B-Body (Roadrunners, Chargers) will also fit an E-Body (Challengers, 'Cudas). The underhood dimensions, front subframes, and suspensions are identical.

Youwill need an alternator bracket from a big-block car. You will also need pulleys.

Small-block 727 transmissions and big-block 727's are the same length, so you can use the same driveshaft that came with your small-block equipped car.

Don't worry about changing the torsion bars to the larger diameter unless you are into handling.

Do get a radiator from a big-block equipped car.

Any of the above advice goes out the window if you are planning on putting a Big-Block Mopar in an A-Body (Dart, Duster). If you are doing one of these, you are on your own!
