Ford Escort

the original "world car"

I only own three of these little monsters. My first car was a 1982 Escort. It was my dad's second car, replacing a 1967 VW Beetle he'd bought new. When I inherited the "blue car," it already had 108K miles on it. I have proceeded to put more than another 137K on it, and it still runs...

The picture above is of Lee Kaufman's 1984 Ford Escort, which was an ITC car until its unfortunate demise at Summit Point in 1999. He and Dave Flinchbaugh (pictured below) ran their cars at Summit Point Raceway in the DC SCCA Region's MARRS series. Dave was second in ITC MARRS points in 1998, after a few races early in the season where he had mechanical problems. As long as their cars finished the race, they were pretty much always in the top 5 ITC finishers.

I have a 1985 Ford Escort that I have been attempting to set up to ITC specifications. I have currently run into a small snag, not having realized that the 1985 1/2 cars are slightly different than the 1985 cars, and I mean besides the 1.9L engine in the 1985 1/2 car (I was planning on putting a built 1.6L into it anyway). I think I can still get away with running ITC in the car, as long as it's got a 1.6L in it, since the listing only says "1981-1985 Ford Escort 1.6L" and doesn't distinguish between the early model year and the 1985 1/2 models. The 1985-1990 Ford Escort 1.9L and GT models are listed as ITB cars.

So far, I have an engine for the race car, but it's still in the blue car (the '82). The cage was completed early in 1997, but that's about the extent of car setup. No one who had previously said they'd help with car setup has offered to help get the engine in or anything else. It's frustrating. I won't get my regional road race license any time soon because of this, and so I've been trying to sell the car just to get it out of my sight. Unfortunately, because it's a new, unproven car (and has no logbook), and the engine is in a "separate carrying case" right now, I think selling it will be downright impossible. I might try finishing the car this summer (2000) and selling it for either ITB/C racing (depending on the motor I end up with) in SCCA Club Racing or PS3/4 in NASA ProRacing.

I also have a 1.6L 1985 Escort (for sale!) that I drove for about 30,000 miles before doing an engine rebuild. It's a gray car, and is in good shape for having been sitting around for over a year. I ditched it right before the rebuild and drove the blue car for a couple of months while waiting for my Camaro to come in.
