"John's Trier Pic's"

Trier, Germany (pronounced TREE IR) was our longest leg of our Germany and France tour. Trier
is also the oldest city in Germany with some civilizations as far back as 16 B.C. such as the
Romans under Augusta Treverorum.
We stayed at the Dorint Hotel. It was a very nice hotel and it faced the Porta Nigra (the Black Gate).
The sights, as you'll see in these pictures, were both quaint and in some cases very awe inspiring.
It was cool and damp when we were there in Dec. of 1998, but the museums and historical buildings
were well worth the chill that was easily dispelled by a hot chocolate or a hot-mulled wine.
While we were here it was the time of the Christmas markets. These brightly festooned booths lined
the city's walkways and you could buy all sorts of crafts and refreshments that were proferred by
the vendors. Some of the sights we visited were fun for the kids too. There is a Spielzeugmuseum
(Toy Museum), lots of toys from throughout the centuries. And yes there is a Pizza Hut and a
MacDonalds as well as some wonderful German restaurants. Karl Marx-Haus is the museum that marks
the birthplace of Karl Marx founder of socialism. His life and legacy made this a must-miss on my
list. Trier is right along the Moselle River (written Mosel in German). The Moselle produces
many fine wines with vast vineyards throughout the whole region. While in Germany you must try
the huge variety of beer, cheese, and chocolate. The pictures # 18-23 were contributed by
Mary Lou from our group. The pictures # 24-26 were from Henry and May in our group. Many
thanks to everyone who contributed.
