Affinity Diagram
What
is Affinity Diagram
An Affinity Diagram is a creative, rather than logical process, ideas are grouped into categories that are naturally related and then each category is identified by one concept which ties all the ideas together. Affinity Diagrams can be used to gather and organize ideas, opinions, issues, etc. An Affinity Diagram can help to identify patterns within data providing recourse for further investigation or action
When to use it?
The affinity diagram is recommended when facts
or thoughts are uncertain and need to be organized, when preexisting ideas or
paradigms need to be overcome, or when ideas need to be clarified, and when
unity within a team needs to be created.
History of Affinity Diagram
The affinity diagram, or also known as the KJ method (after its author, Kawakita Jiro), is one of the most widely used of the Japanese management and planning tools. The affinity diagram was developed to discovering meaningful groups of ideas within a raw list. In doing so, it is important to let the groupings emerge naturally, using the right side of the brain, rather than according to preordained categories.
