37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry's Dyer's Regimental History

The 37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry was organized at Chicago, Illinois, and mustered into service September 18th, 1861. The Regiment was then moved to St. Louis, Missouri on September 19th, and then to Booneville, Missouri on October 2nd, 1861. The Regiment was attached to the Department Of Missouri to February, 1862, then 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of Southwest Missouri until May, 1862. Next they went to Cassville, Missouri as part of the District Of Southwest Missouri to September, 1862. The Regiment then became part of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of the Frontier, Department Of Missouri, to June, 1863. Next, the Regiment became part of the 1st Brigade, Herron's Division, 13th Army Corps, Army Of The Tennessee to July, 1863. Next, they were part of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 13th Army Corps, Department Of The Tennessee, to August, 1863. Then, became part of the Department Of The Gulf to June, 1864. Next, the 37th Illinois became part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 19th Army Corps, Department Of The Gulf to December, 1864. Then, they were part of the 4th Brigade, Reserve Corps, Military Division West Mississippi to February, 1865. And, part of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Reserve Corps, Military Division West Mississippi, to February, 1865. Then, the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 13th Army Corps, Military Division West Mississippi to July, 1865. Finally, the 37th Illinois was part of the Department Of Texas until the muster out of the Regiment on May 15th,1866.

SERVICE - Expedition to Arrow Rock, Missouri on October 10th-14th, 1861 (Companies C and K). Fremont's Campaign against Springfield, Missouri October 13th-November 3rd (Companies C and H at Rolla, Missouri until February, 1862). At Lamine River until February, 1862. Curtis' Campaign against Price in Missouri and Arkansas February and March. Springfield February 12th. Sugar Creek and Bentonville, Arkansas February 17th. Battles Of Pea Ridge, Arkansas March 6th-8th, 1862. At Cassville, Missouri guarding frontier in Southwest Missouri, and operating against guerrillas until September 29th, 1862. Cassville June 11th (Detachment). Expedition from Ozark to Forsyth August 14th-17th (Companies A and K). March to Osage Springs September 29th-October 24th. Occupation of Newtonia October 4th. Expedition from Osage Springs to Fayetteville, Arkansas October 27th-30th. March to relief of Blunt December 3rd-7th. Battle Of Prairie Grove, Arkansas December 7th. Expedition over the Boston Mountains to Van Buren, Arkansas December 27th-29th. Operations against Marmaduke in Missouri April 17th-May 2nd, 1863. Action at Cape Girardeau, Missouri April 26th. Chalk Bluffs May 2nd. Moved to St. Louis, Missouri, thence to Vicksburg, Mississippi June 3rd-14th. Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi June 14th-July 4th. Surrender of Vicksburg July 4th. Expedition to Yazoo City, Mississippi July 12th-21st. Capture of Yazoo City July 13th. Moved to Port Hudson, Louisiana July 24th, thence to New Orleans, Louisiana August 13th. Expedition after Taylor's and Green's forces, west of the Atchafalya River September 8th-October 11th. Action at Sterling's Farm on Bayou Fordoche September 29th. Moved to the Rio Grande, Texas October 24th-November 4th. At Brownsville and guarding Rio Grande to Ringgold Barracks until February, 1864. Expedition to Rio Grande City November 23rd-December 2nd, 1863. Regiment veteranizes February 28th, 1864. Veterans on furlough until April. Moved to Memphis, Tennessee, then sent on an expedition from Memphis, Tennessee to Ripley, Mississippi April 30th-May 9th. Moved to Atchafalaya Bayou, Louisiana to construct steamboat bridge acrocc the bayou for Bank's forces. At Morganza, Louisiana until July 12, then moved to St. Charles on White River, Arkansas July 12th, and on duty there until October. The Non-Veterans are Mustered Out on September 20th, 1864. Duty at Duvall's Bluff, Arkansas October 7th, 1864 to January 4th, 1865. Moved to New Orleans, Louisiana thence to Barrancas, Florida. Marched to Pensacola, Florida March 11th. Marched to Fort Blakely, Alabama March 20th-April 1st. Occupation of Canoe Station March 27th. Siege Of Spanish Fort April 2nd-8th. Assault and capture of Fort Blakely April 9th. Occupation of Mobile, Alabama April 12th. Moved to Montgomery, Alabama April 20th-29th, thence to Selma, Alabama May 1st. Moved to Mobile, Alabama, and did duty there May 15th to June 28th. Moved to Galvston, Texas June 28th to July 1st, and to Sabine Pass July 1st-5th. Moved to Houston, Texas July 17th. Did railroad guard duty in that vicinity until May, 1866 when the Regiment was Mustered Out on May 15th, 1866.

The 37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry was Mustered Out on May 15th, 1866.

The 37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry lost 4 Officers and 60 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 168 Enlisted men by disease during their service. This is a total of 233 men.
