Senate Blames Self Over Non-implementation of Appropriation Acts by President Obasanjo
Members of the Senate, Friday, June 21, retracted their steps in the planned impeachment of President Obasanjo over alleged non-implementation of Appropriation Acts passed since 1999,
claiming that exercise, if implemented would have only exposed the inadequacies of the Senate in the discharged of its statutory functions.
The Senators argued that the 1999 Constitution bestows on the National Assembly the power to appropriate money and also monitor the expenditure through the oversight function of its
committee.
How do we explain to the electorate that Obasanjo alone sat over the money appropriated since 1999? the senators said.
They added: That is a sure way of admitting our failure in the discharge of our duties as specified in the Constitution.
Public sentiment would have turned against us midway into the planned impeachment exercise.
