Armed Ijaw Youths go on Rampage in Yenagoa

Barely a week after protesting youths, Friday, July 5, smashed glass doors and windows of the private home of Mr. Abel Femowei, the transport Officer in the Bayelsa State Government House, and a close relative of Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, and believed to has strong political influence over the governor, rampaging youths have again took to the streets Sunday, July 7, but this time their targets are the homes of Senator David Brigidi, Mr. Blessing Akpuloma, PDP Deputy National Organizing Secretary, and Mr. Jackson Suokiri, the State PDP Secretary.

The protest which was a fallout of the State primaries was said to have been led by a member of the State House of Assembly whose name was not mentioned. The protesters, some of whom were armed with riffles, machetes and knifes threw the tiny oil rich capital into pandemonium.

Seakle to the spate of violence in the State capital, Yenagoa, armed arti-riot policemen were Wednesday July 10, drafted to keep peace at the party secretariat in Yenagoa. Despite the large number of men of the police force present in and around the secretariat, pockets of placard carrying protesters could be seen in the vicinity of the secretariat. They alleged government interference in the last primaries, particularly in Ekeremor and Sagbama local government areas, and are therefore calling for the cancellation and the conduct of fresh primaries.

Arsonist Touch Balogun Market

Barely a month after the Lapal House was gutted by fire in Lagos Island, another inferno has raised down the popular Balogun market, known for its rich collection of clothing, textile and footwear, Friday July 5, destroying property worth millions of Naira.

Aggrieved members of the Balogun Traders Association in a statement signed by the Association Chairman, Chief Boniface Ezeaka and addressed to the Lagos State Governor, Ahmed Bola Tinubu. In the letter, the association claimed that they suspect arson in the fire that gutted the market, saying that, the fire started from all the four corners of the market, suggesting that the market was set ablaze purposely by saboteurs. They also pointed out that most of the shops gutted by the fire had earlier been burgled before the fire started..

The association is calling on the National Emergency Relief Agency and the Lagos State Government to come to their aid as many of their members have lost their only means of livelihood. They are also calling for the State government to set up an investigation into the causes of the fire.

Responding to the placard carrying traders, Governor Tinubu told them that the Lagos State government would work with the Lagos Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) to rebuild the market, but the issue of compensation is completely out of the question. This incidence is not government creation, it is caused by an arsonist or saboteur, he said.
