cutouts series
Within the series of 'cutout' quilts, the whole cloth motif is used as commercially printed. Sometimes the backgrounds of the image are removed (reverse applique) and replaced with pieced work, sometimes the images are added and directly appliqued over the top surface, as in a collage technique. This technique is an adaptation of traditional 'broiderie perse' which was done when printed cottons were extremely expensive and had to go a long way.
