Carlos Salinas de Gortari (1988-1994)

CSG was born in Mexico City on Apr 3, 1948, son to Raul Salinas Lozano who had been a minister for presidente Lopez Mateos.

His election was marred by the controversial crashing of the computers doing the electoral counting, when previous to the event Salinas was losing but emerged as winner after the computers came up. This prompted the opposition to call the election a "coup".

His government was distinguished for opening the economy to the world's markets, especially the signing of NAFTA.

His last year as presidente was marked by the Zapatista uprising, the killing of presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio, and the prelude to the worst economic crisis in modern Mexican history.
