· Seineroak edo Itsas-Alkateak euskal Arrantzaleen Kofradietan ertaroa danik ezarritako karguak dira eta, gaur egun, Bermeoko portuan baino ez dira mantentzen. Demokratikoki aukeraturiko patroiak izaten dira eta honeen eginkizun nagusia bere eskupean dagozan kideen bizitzaren jagole eta gordelari izatea da, eta horretarako itsasuntzien itsasoratzeak eta porturatzeak aginduko eta eratuko dauz, aurretiaz itsasoa eta haizearen egoera zuzenean aztertuaz eta, egun, eguraldia ondo ezagutu eta bere bilakaerea jakiteko dagozan edozein era erabiliz. Honen bidez, batzuek, konfidantza larregi hartzearren edo untzien arteko berezko konpetentziagaitik, arinkeriz, jasan ahal dabezan behar ez diran arriskuak ekidin gura da.
· Los Señeros o Alcaldes de Mar son una institución medieval establecida en las Cofradías de Pescadores vascas que, en la actualidad, sólo se mantienen en el puerto de Bermeo. Se trata de patrones elegidos democráticamente, cuya función es la defensa y salvaguarda de la vida de sus compañeros pescadores, para lo cual dispondrán y ordenarán sobre las salidas y regresos de la flota pesquera a tenor de sus observaciones previas y directas del estado de la mar y del viento, y modernamente, de cualquier medio de conocimiento y predicción del tiempo. Con ello se trata de evitar riegos innecesarios que algunos, imprudentemente, podrían correr movidos por el exceso de confianza o la natural competencia mutua entre las embarcaciones.

The Señeros
or Sea Mayors are a medieval institution established in the Basque
Fishermen's Guilds that, at present, only are supported in Bermeo's port. It is
a question of skippers chosen democratically, whose function is the defense and
safeguard of the life of its companions fishermen, for which they will arrange
on the go outings and returns of the fishing fleet to tenor of its previous and
direct observations of the condition of sea and of the wind, and nowadays, of
any way of knowledge and weather forecast. With it they try for avoiding
unnecessary risks that some fisherman, imprudently, might draw moved by the
confidence excess or the natural mutual competition of the fishing vessels.

Untzi guztiak joan behar dira Seineroarenaren atzetik. Eguraldiaren errezeluz,
bela amaineten badau, beste guztiak gauza bardina egingo dabe eta itxaron. ·
Todas las embarcaciones deben salir tras la del Señero. Si ésta, por
recelo del tiempo, arría la vela, las demás harán lo mismo y esperarán. ·
All the ships must go out after that of the
Señero's. If this one, for fear of the weather, lowers the sail, the others
they will do the same thing and will expect. |

Behaketa egin ondoren, Seineruari eguraldi ona egingo dauela baderitxo,
bela izatu eta kalara joango da, besteari be gauza bera egiten baimenduz. ·
Tras la observación, si el Señero estima que el cariz del tiempo es
bueno, izará la vela y se dirigirá a la cala, permitiendo a las demás a hacer
lo mismo. ·
After the observation, if the Señero thinks
that the aspect of the weather is good, he will hoist the sail and will go to
the fishing ground allowing to all others to do the same thing. |

baderitxo, seina izatu eta etxerantz egingo dau, besteari be gauza bera
egiten behartuz. ·
Si tras la observación el Señero estima que el cariz del tiempo es
desfavorable, izará la seña y retornará a puerto, obligando a todas las demás
lanchas a hacer lo mismo. ·
If after the observation the Señero thinks
that the aspect of the weather is unfavorable, he will hoist the signal and
will come back to port, forcing to all other ships to do the same thing. |
