NOW: REGISTER has been published on the Web. See it at: http://www.geocities.com/Reenacoppal

This is HAW's maintained copy of data compiled mostly by Roberta Mahoney. I have noticed that apostrophes and quotation marks are missing from this document; these may have disappeared when the file was converted to HTML.

Except for a few items (by Searl, Mulhall, HAW) it is entirely the result of her diligent research at the Ellis Island website . It is in the form of working notes w/o the benefit of spell checking. Towns and townlands may be misspelled because of the difficulty of reading ship manifests.

This file presents an idea of the wealth of information at the Ellis Island site and the difficulty the site presents. Roberta transcribed everything: weight, height, . . .

------------------------------------- Roberta Mahoney 1 --------------------------------------------------------

This page is a mix of several Roberta Mahoney lists, a few names from HAW, and Hannah McCarthy Mulhall's and Joe Searl's information about their families.

Roberta Mahoney has found on EllisIslandRecords.org the following information on immigrants from the Bantry area to Casper and to Rawlins. I will need to add some of these to Register.

On SS Campania from Queenstown 19 APR 1903 to New York Arrival: 25 APR 1903

John Sullivan 21 Male Single Laborer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Rawlins, WY to Cousin John OMahony

John _ _ _hane 20 Male Single Laborer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Rawlins WY to Cousin John OMahony (HAW: Bohane?) Later weve guessed or found Ellis Island readings of this name as Leyhane or Levhane.)

After research I am convinced that there are Leyhanes as well as Lehanes. I searched EllisIslandRecords for Leyhane and found eight. One of these manifests included Nora Leyhane and Mary Lehane.

James Regan 22 Male Single Laborer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Rawlins WY to Cousin John OMahony

Charles Cronin 20 Male Single Laborer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Rawlins WY to Cousin John OMahony

The above are sponsored by Rawlins John to Rawlins.

Eugene Daly 21 Male Single Farmer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Casper WY to Bro John Daly Box 79 Casper, WY (HAW: He is listed as Raly on the E.I. site.) (#234, now hes better located geographically, & we know his ship and arrival date. 6 John Dalys in list.)

Mike Driscoll 22 Male Single Farmer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Bro John Daly (HAW: Where? Daly? Driscoll? I think this is Mike Daly 159. Arrival checks out. Michael Driscoll 559 arrived about the same time on Aurania.)

My argument:

1. There may be a problem: Driscoll going to brother Daly. (They could be half brothers, tho.)

2. If their surnames are the same, both could be Driscol or both Daly.

3. Michael Daly arrived NYC on Campania 4-26-1903 after leaving Queenstown 4-18-1903 per Register. Its not uncommon for these dates to disagree a bit.

Michael Driscoll (age 22) left Queenstown 4-20-1903, and arrived NYC about a week later on Aurania per Register: Same age, dates, different ship. Perhaps Mike uses the name Richard.

Is Mike headed for Casper or Rawlins?

It is hard to be sure.

Michael Mahoney 24 Male Single Farmer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Casper WY Cousin John Coughlen Coughlan?, Casper, WY (There are 3 Michaels in the list. Michael is of right age to be 259 father-in-law of Sue Mahoney. There are 2 John Coughlans & 1 John Coughlin.)

Thomas Donovan 24 Male Single Farmer Read:Y Write:Y Residence: Bantry to Rawlins, WY to Cousin John OMahoney Rawlins WY (Rawlins! Rawlins John? 5 Thomases in list.

HAW comments on above: I looked for the ship manifest to determine the John hane name. I could not find some of these names. For those names I did find, the ships manifest was for the Pallanza, not the Campania. Then looked at the text manifest (transcribed and digital the original manifest is a photocopy, analog). The text manifest is limited. It includes only name, age, gender, marital status, and home. The home entry was Bastri for Bantry. Roberta reports detail that is not in the text manifest, so her search for the original manifest was successful while mine was not. E.I. records are not entirely accurate, and are not always synchronized.

In addition to the above I found the following Bantry names in text manifest. (without destination):

Co. Sullivan 20 Male Single

Sean Sullivan 21 Male Single

Margaret Sullivan 19 Female Single

John Sullivan 24 Male Single (perhaps the same John)

I scanned many pages of the text manifest. Steerage was full of Irish immigrants, many from West Cork towns: Skibbereen, Ballydehob, Clonakilty, . . .

I did not find John ..hane, James Regan, and Charles Cronin whow are on Robertas list. See my remark about E.I. records.

More from Roberta Mahoney (Roberta believes her connection to Casper is through John Rawlins Mahoney, and is looking for surnames of his cousins.)

Note:
Roberta noticed James Bohane showing up three times, there is a definite connection with Casper, however the 1922 manifest says he had been in Casper from 1909/14.  Apparently  he left US  in 1914 and decided to come back in 1922 only not to Casper, but to New York.

Buckley

Marianne (Leferink) Hofsheier (NCHS 1944) reports that her Casperite grandparents, Buckley, were born in Ireland.

Joe Searl of Eugene, OR reports that his grandmother was born in Ireland and settled in Douglas, WY. Joe was born in Midwest, and lived in Salt Creek until 1937 when the family moved to Oregon.

Patrick Silver and Catherine Moroney Silver migrated from Knockacoola Townland in County Waterford to Iowa in 1864 with four daughters. Another daughter died along the way. Two sons were born in Iowa. The three oldest sisters experienced Converse County.

Mary Maria Silver, b1849, married 1878 to Christopher William Searl, lived in Janesville, Iowa before moving to LeSueuer, Minnesota. Then, in 1900, the family moved to Douglas, Wyoming. Mary died in Douglas 1926. Her husband survived until 1932. Mary and Bill had three children: Clara married Frank Newells brother Emmett and lived in Esterbrook. Francis Edson married Katherine Dowson and after several years in Wyoming moved to Oregon. Emma married Ed Stanton and moved to Texas.

Katherine (Katie, Kitty), b1851, married about 1869 to John Richardson who died in Cedar Falls, Iowa from a work-related accident. They had one child, John Stephen Richardson. Date of death unknown. She visited sisters in Wyoming for at least two extended stays. Postcards reveal an Anamosa, Iowa address between visits.

Margaret (Maggie) Silver, b1853, married Frank Newell in 1893 and lived with him at the Spring Hill Ranch south of Douglas. They had no children. Maggie died 1925.

Hannah (McCarthy) Mulhall provided information on her father and four uncles who immigrated to Rawlins & Casper.

Hannah (McCarthy) Mulhall was born in Donore, Kilcrohane, Cork; she now lives in Kilkenny.

*Her father, Timothy McCarthy, immigrated to Rawlins, WY. On a visit to Ireland he met a girl from Kerry who had immigrated to San Francisco. They married, settled in Donore, and never used their return tickets. Timothy arrived in NYC on Cymric 4-6-1915 at age 24. He was 5 6. His contact was his brother, Charles. Hannah has the original Declaration of Intent that Timothy filed 3-11-1918.

Tim McCarthy born June 1891. He went to Rocky Mts. March 1915 . He returned to Ireland 1923 . Got married to a Kerry woman he met on the boat . They had 4 children . He died June 3rd 1964 .

Four of Timothys brothers also immigrated to Rawlins. They were:

*Charles died in a flu epidemic.

Charles McCarthy born December 1888 went to Rocky Mountains March 1912 . Died December 24th 1918.

HAW EI search: Arrived NYC 3-8-1912 on Mauretania at age 23. His contact was his brother Denis. He was 5 8.

*Denis died in a flu epidemic about the same time as Charles.

Denis McCarthy born Jan. 1890 went to Rocky Mts. Apr. 1910 . He died Jan. 15th 1919.

*Jeremiah never returned to Ireland. He was shot to death near Casper while herding sheep.

My uncle Jeremiah married . I don't know her nationality and as far as I know they had no family. We also heard it was HER brother who shot him during a row herding sheep.

*Dan never returned to Ireland. He died a few years before 2002. He was a sheepherder.

Dan McCarthy born Feb. 1893 . He went to Rocky Mts. April 6th 1924 . Died in Casper July 1979 . Burial July 25th 1979 Memorial Garden cemetary , Casper , WY .

On Dan's death cert. , he was down as widower . We don't know anything about the details .I am sending those dates from of births and details from an old notebook belonging to my grandmother dated 1886 . She was a schoolteacher in Galladoo national school , Galladoo. I do not have a copy of the return tickets to USA held by my parents in 1923. I will send you a copy of my fathers declaration of intention .

HAW comments:

On Cymric with Timothy (4-7-1915 per EllisIslandRecords.org) were:

*Patrick Coughlan, age 20, 5 8; his contact was his cousin ? OMahony in Casper.

A note on Ellis Island records: HAW searched for Timothy McCarthy, then narrowed the search to 1915. There were 6 name matches but none was this Timothy. I then searched with the requirement that the ship be Cymric, and finally found Timothy's record.

With Charles McCarthy (See Above) on Mauretania. (arrived NYC 3-8-1912)

*Denis Burke, Ballyvourneen, age 27, 5 !0; his contact was Eugene McCarthy in Casper. (In Register This information clarifies his arrival date.)

*John Carroll, Bell Rock Rd, Bantry, age 26, 5 8, contact: cousin John OMahony in Rawlins (Probably Rawlins John)

*Jeremiah Collins, Scort(?) Road, Bantry, age 27, 5 8, contact: cousin John OMahony in Rawlins (Probably Rawlins John)
