The Essential Spirits

Tequila

Blue agave plants from Mezcal

Origins

Not surprisingly, the birthplace of Tequila was... Tequila, Mexico. This is not counting fermented agave beverages the Aztecs drank. Tequila as we know it was crafted in the 17th century. Sauza tequila was the first tequila company to export the golden and silver liquid to the United States. This brand still remains a dominant force in the industry today. Tequila was originally consumed straight, or with a small amount of lime and salt. It was appreciated and pursued like a fine scotch. In recent years tequila has become an emblem for pre-made margarita mix and poor decisions. The next time you drink tequila, imagine you are in an old western, and it's your last drink before the long ride. You'll like it more.

Flavor Profiles

Silver tequila has more flavor complexity than most clear liquid alcohols. The agave plant varies greatly based on what region it is in, and what type of the plant it is. Mezcal is essentially tequila, but from unapproved regions, which are often just as tasty. This is a common practice in the liquor/wine world. You may only use certain names if you are in that particular region, case in point, Champagne france. Aging in oak and steel barrels allow for more complex subtleties to erupt from the product. It truly is reminiscent of whiskey.

Learning More

If you go to a restaurant, you will know if they have a great selection of tequila. It will be an entire wall, because collection is a big part of tequila. To have tasted a particular vintage is a privilege and another notch on the bedpost. Keep your eyes peeled, and when you find a good one, don't go right for a cocktail. Those cocktails are for mediocre tequilas to make them taste great. If a tequila is already great, sip it straight. Sip it strong and enjoy the burn as it was meant to be.
