HOW TO WRITE THE METHODOLOGY SECTION OF

A RESEARCH REPORT OR PROPOSAL

1.        Preliminaries

1.1. Methodology section of the research proposal or research report includes: problem statement, objectives, framework of analysis, definition of terms and hypotheses (as appropriate), research design and sources of data, data gathering techniques, instruments, and tools, plan for data analysis, significance of the study, and limitations.

1.2. See suggested outline of research report or proposal for details (handout 1 of series on research methods and statistics)

2.        Identify and explicitly state the following:

2.1. Research strategy, design, or description of research strategy and design

2.2. Sources of data: whether primary, secondary, or a combination of primary and secondary  sources will be used

2.3. Data collection or gathering techniques and description of data gathering tools and instruments (the actual data gathering tools and instruments can be attached as appendices although the methodology section can provide a listing and description of each item): discuss manpower which will carry out the data gathering, how instruments will be administered, when, and how reactivity to instruments will be eliminated, avoided, or controlled

2.4. Data analysis: discuss how inference will be made, how data will be interpreted, whether tests of hypotheses will be conducted, whether 1-tail or 2-tail tests will be made, describe broadly or give an overview of the null and alternate hypotheses.
