Burial of Phocion: Nicolas Poussin (1648, Louvre, Paris)

Nicolas Poussin is recognized as one of the most consummate painters of the ideal landscape. He used mathematically derived spacing and austere colours to create ordered, idealized vistas. The theme of Landscape with the Burial of Phocion (1648, Louvre, Paris) is the saga of the Greek hero Phocion, who was put to death in 317 BC under false charges of treason.
