This scene on the River Stour, John Constable 1817

John Constable explored many different aspects of landscape in various parts of England, but it was with his native Suffolk that he had the closest affinity. This scene on the River Stour, which he exhibited in 1817, was the first in a series of major paintings of the locality that Constable produced in his mature years. The mill in the background belonged to his father.
