CRUISER DUELS:
The Niitaka and Otowa vs. the Svietlana in the aftermath of the Battle of Tsushima

1905

The Japanese ships
Two small light cruisers, neither much superior to the Svietlana in a one-on-one fight. These were among the newest Japanese cruisers at that time. As the Japanese battleships and armored cruisers annihilated the Russian Empire's Baltic battleship fleet, the smaller Japanese cruisers had the task of sweeping away the Russian supply ships and hunting down escaping warships. The Svietlana was one of their victims.

The Russian ship
The Svietlana was a small light cruiser with 6 6-inch guns. A good-looking ship that was unable to escape from the disaster of the Battle of Tsushima. After four of the five best Russian battleships were sunk or knocked out of action on the first day, the night was one of torpedo and mine attacks on the survivors. The Russian fleet became scattered, the old armored cruisers and relic battleships that had filled out its ranks being harassed and picked off into the next day. The Svietlana fell into the company of the two Japanese light cruisers and met the same fate as many of the other straggling Russian ships.
