Sunrise over Springbrook 1

Sunrise over Springbrook 1

The Springbrook range runs along the eastern-most edge of the Gold Coast hinterland mountains, with Coolangatta and the sea on one side and the Numinbah Valley on the other.
From the lookout at Binnaburra the sun can be seen rising directly over this range. But this painting is not a landscape. It came to me as a strong dream image early one morning after a long sleepless night.
Some people seem to find this painting uncomfortable or confronting - the immense sun rises right out of the range - not from behind - as if the mountains themselves are giving birth to 'the brand new day'.
That's how I saw it, so that's exactly how it's painted.

Oil on canvas. 32in x 26in (approx).
