"The First Time, ever I saw your face...."

Sonny and I on the day of his arrival, November, 1969. It was a memorable day for me for more than one reason :o( Mom had just come and picked me up after totaling out her brand new camero.

Well, everyone has their own version, don't they? And I have mine. I have read stories in magazines that gives you Jerry Wells' point of view of how it happened, and I won't dispute him, but I'm going to tell you the story as I remember it.
At the time, my dad, Bernie Mark, had once again ventured into the horse business with his "good friend", Dean Landers. He had purchased a little reining stud from Dean, named Sugar Bar Dell (5x world champion reining stallion) and a pretty blue roan mare named TJ Frosty. My dad had decided to get back into the horse business. Although Sugar Bar Dell was a champion (and alot of fun to ride, I might add :o)), he didn't have alot of chrome. My dad loved chrome. (This probably came from his days of owning and showing Golden Saddlebreds in all the local parades). So, he told Dean of his desire to own a quarter horse stud with the single requirement of having four white stockings.
Now, here is where my story and Jerry's would differ. Dean told Jerry, and Jerry knew of a man in Oklahoma who had a stud with four white socks who had won a few classes at the Oklahoma fair. Jerry gave him a call and that night went over to take a look at this stud. As it was dark, and there were no lights, Jerry had to use a flashlight, he shown it on the horse and saw the four white stockings. Well, then insued a flurry of phone calls between my dad, Jerry and Dean. They wanted $25,000 for Sonny. My dad told them that he would pay them $5000 to bring him up and if he liked him, he'd give them the other $20,000. It was a deal.
Now, I'm not sure, I wasn't there when Sonny arrived (see above about the wrecked camero), but this is how my dad always told it...
Jerry pulled into Deans on that November day, gets out of the truck and immediately started making eye contact with Dean, slightly shaking his head no, and just all around looking pretty uncomfortable. Dean was trying to figure out what all this meant, and had a quiet little powwow with Jerry by the cab of the truck. Well, they then proceed to unload the horse. "Unwrap his legs first", says my Dad. Sure enough, four perfectly matched white stockings. Off comes the blanket: Sonny Dee Bar

Well, ole' Dean takes one look at Sonny and runs over to my dad and tries to shove back the $5000 dad had given him. "You don't want this horse, Bernie" Dean says as he tries to shove the money back at him. My Dad, with a twinkle in his eye, and that sh*t eating grin, only my father had; just says, "Yep, I believe I do", and he shoved the other $20,000 into Deans hands. And this is how we came to own Sonny Dee Bar :o)*chuckle*

Notice whose the only one smiling, don't you?
:o)
