Abaddon
Incarnate
After some time has passed
since the release of "Nadir", it was time for Abaddon Incarnate from Ireland
to offers us their next attack, which hears in the name "Dark Crusade".
The soundtrack of brutality, of pain and aggressiveness... Let's hear them
out...
1.FIRST OF ALL, WHAT HAPPENED TO ABADDON INCARNATE
FROM THE RELEASE OF "NADIR" TILL THE "DARK CRUSADE" ALBUM?
After Nadir we toured Europe with Welsh Death
metallers Desecration. We reached Spain, Great Britain, France and the
Czech republic. We also went to Australia but we headlined that tour. We
then had some difficulty with our drummer Olan Parkinson, Basically we
had some problems personally and he left. We then enlisted Jason Connelly
on drums and spent some time training him in and writing the new album
at the same time.
2.IF I ASKED YOU TO PRESENT
THE ALBUM YOURSELVES TO THE READERS, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM? WHICH WORDS
WOULD YOU USE?
I would classify this Album to be A Dark Crusade
of Evil Death metal played with Grindcore Ethics. 16 tracks of brutal,
hyper uncompromising Brutality. Musically it sits between the death of
“The Last Supper” and the grind of “Nadir”.
3.ARE YOU SATISFIED BY THE FINAL RESULT? IS THERE
ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO CHANGE NOW? WHICH ELEMENTS DO YOU THINK LACK FROM
YOUR MUSIC AND WHICH DO YOU THINK YOU SHOULDN’T USE AGAIN IN THE FUTURE?
I am pretty happy with the outcome of “Dark
Crusade” however the next time we make a record I think I would like to
create longer songs as when recreating them live it is difficult for the
fans to grasp the songs when they are played in 1 minute.
4.CAN YOU POINT OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES
AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN “NADIR” AND “DARK CRUSADE”? DO YOU THINK
YOU MANAGED TO CREATE YOUR PERSONAL SOUND, YOUR TRADEMARK?
The similarities are few and the differences
are many. First and foremost we have a new drummer which has added a militaristic
consistency in the beats whereas before we had chaos for drums. The vocal
delivery is far superior on this one as on Nadir my vocals were quite weak
methinks owing to the fact that my throat was screwed with an infection
when I sang on nadir. I think the song writing style has remained consistent
and we have a trademark structure to our songs. But the sound is different.
I think this is a good thing however as Id hate to be one of these bands
who sounds the same on each album that we do.
5.YOUR ALBUM’S TITLE IS “DARK CRUSADE”. WHY DID
YOU NAME IT THIS WAY? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SUGGEST?
We took it from an Autopsy song of Mental
Funeral. The name Abaddon Incarnate is to describe the leader of the Satanic
Militia when Apocalypse comes. It is at the end of time, Ragnarok, Armageddon,
whatever, that we, under abaddons banner of destruction and Nihilism, shall
embark on a dark crusade and purge the earth of Human life.
6.WHERE ARE YOUR LYRICS REFERRING TO? WHAT KIND
OF TOPICS ATTRACT AND INTRIGUE YOU TO TALK ABOUT? HOW IMPROTANT ARE LYRICS
FOR YOU? CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US WHAT “1756” IS ALL ABOUT? WHAT HAPPENED
THAT YEAR?
Our lyrics are about death, occult, misery,
hate, vengeance, suicide, murder, rape and war. It is important for us
to have a negative aspect in all our lyrics. We are not a positive band.
Nothing good is to be created in our lyrics, nothing good must come from
our work. The lyrics are designed to depress and undermine positive aspects
in people’s lives. 1756 is a song about torture, mans inhumanity to man,
the callous disregard we have for one another. It was in 1756 when the
British administration locked a couple of hundred Indian prisoners in a
black hole in Calcutta with no water. The only light was from a small window
in the corner. This was the only fresh air. The prisoners shit and pissed
themselves and started to climb and crush one another in panic. When the
British opened the door only a few survived.
7.YOU USED FOR THE SECOND TIME MIESZKO OF NASUM
AS THE PRODUCER. ARE YOU STILL SATISFIED WITH HIM? AREN’T YOU AFRAID THAT
UNINTENTIONALLY YOU MIGHT SOUND SIMILAR TO BANDS LIKE NASUM, EXHUMED, ETC
DUE TO THE PRODUCTION?
If you listen to Dark Crusade you can see
that it sounds nothing like Nasum or Exhumed. We use Soundlab because he
can make heavy production which unfortunately cannot be got in Ireland,
and it costs the same to go to Sweden as it does to stay in Ireland. Nadir
sounded a bit too Swedish for my liking so we rectified that with the sound
on dark Crusade, for example we used our own sound from our rehearsal room
and did not use the Nasum setup.
8.WHICH MUSICIANS MADE YOU REALIZE THAT YOU WANTED
TO INVOLVE WITH THIS KIND OF MUSIC? WHICH THINGS ATTRACT YOU IN BRUTAL
DEATH/GRIND METAL? WHAT’S THIS GENRE FOR YOU?
I have listened to heavy music for as long
as I can remember starting with AC/DC and Iron Maiden when I was a child
and progressing to Slayer and Megadeth. But the first Death metal albums
I bought, I bought on the same day in virgin megastore in Dublin. They
were Morbid Angel "Altars Of Madness" and Napalm Death "From Enslavement",
and they remain my all time favorites still to this day. I have always
played guitar, my dad taught me at an early age. But it was these albums
which encouraged me to find a band intent on being fast, evil and heavy.
I then began tape trading and soon I had Hundreds of cassettes and piles
of flyers from all the mail I did from people with my same interest from
all over the world. It grew from there.
9.NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR COVER ARTWORK A BIT.
WHAT DOES IT EXPRESS? HOW IS IT RELATED TO THE LYRICS AND MUSIC OF ABADDON
INCARNATE?
Once again it is representative of the Dark
Crusade. Bjorn form Killustrations did the artwork. We told him the album
concept which I mentioned already and he went to work. We gave him free
reign on the artwork. Xtreem records wanted a Fetus on the cover like a
gore band. But this does not represent Abaddon Incarnate as we are not
a gore band or a porno grind band.
10.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE THAT DOESN’T
KNOW YOU IN ORDER TO INTRGUE HIS INTEREST?
“Only Faggots, Communists and Christians don’t
get Abaddon Incarnate”.
11.WHICH REVIEW THAT YOU READ DO YOU THINK DESCRIBES
YOUR MUSIC THE BEST WAY AND IS THE MOST FLATTERING AND WHICH IS THE WORST
AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR SOUND ACCORDING TO YOU? IS THERE A COMMON
STATEMENT YOU READ IN ALMOST ALL THE REVIEWS YOU RECEIVE?
A review from MetalIreland.com gave us a top
mark and gave in-depth appraisal of the work. Some other shithead also
said that we can't write songs or play our instruments but he was a Goth
metal type shithead I don’t see why we were in his zine. A common thing
a lot of people say is our music is totally relevant to this day and age
whilst based on the work of Napalm Death, Terrorizer and Regurgitate it
retains a modern feel. Grind for the Modern Grind freak.
12.DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS? DO YOU
LIKE PERFORMING LIVE? WHY ARE LIVE SHOWS IMPORTANT FOR YOU AND DO YOU THINK
YOU ARE ABLE TO FULLY REPRODUCE YOUR SOUND IN A GIG?
We love touring and performing live. In the
first instance when we created the band we were always a live band. We
would play every gig possible it was our second home on stage. Its important
to perform the songs and see the response from our fans. It is important
for us to interact with the people at a gig and see that our hard work
has relevance to the people at the show. We are working hard on our sound
at the moment. We have hired a full time sound engineer and have purchased
some new amplification. So we shall be improving in the time to come.
13.XTREEM MUSIC IS THE THIRD LABEL YOU SIGN A
DEAL WITH. WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE PREVIOUS 2 LABELS? WITH WHICH CRITERIA
DO YOU SELECT A RECORD LABEL?
I am sick of this question, however we left
Seasons of Shit because he had no interest in us, gave us no promotion
and then would not pay our royalties. We were actually very happy with
sentinel but we left him because Xtreem had bigger distribution. We would
have no objection to working with sentinel again they are a more than competent
label as are Xtreem. In the future I am going to start looking in to being
more independent of labels. I am going to see about producing our own Cds
and Vinyl’s and seeing if we can float our own boat for a while. Many bands
are doing this now such as Napalm Death for example and Morbid Angel own
all their own publishing etc. Because with the encroachment of the internet
into all of our lives communication and advertisement has become a lot
quicker and easier.
14.IF YOU COULD BE AN IMPROTANT PERSONALITY FOR
A DAY, WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AND WHICH PERIOD OF HIS/HER LIFE WOULD
YOU LIKE TO HAVE A TASTE OF?
I am a personality who is important to myself,
I would rather be no one else but me, I believe I have the potential, with
the correct application of willpower and tenacity, to do whatever and become
whatever I desire to be. It is for this reason that I would rather be no
one else but me.
15.WHAT TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO
HAVE?
