ALL IN VAIN

“ALL IN VAIN…BUT NOT THESE GUYS!”
All In Vain have good probabilities to create a new innovative sound to expand death metal where we can’t imagine…
1.GIVE US A SHORT BAND BIO. POINT OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND’S LIFE. WHICH IS THE CURRENT LINE UP?
All In Vain formed in 1997 by some members of Lost Child, a thrash metal band fairly famous in nord Italy. The new band decided to play a swedish death metal which unites melody and power with influences from In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Edge Of Sanity, At The Gates, but not renouncing the thrash metal roots. After a good year of live acts arrived the first demotape which received good reviews all over Italy (a track appeared on Psychosonic cd n° 18). In the year 2000 there was a change in the line-up and the new band began to write the new songs. In november 2001 was out the new promocd “The Backside Of Humanity”, co-produced with the metal shop Marrakesh Music of Modena. With this new cd All In Vain reconfirm the leadership in the death metal scenery of Modena. In June 2002 enter the band the keyboarder Francesca to expand All In Vain’s musical horizons to create a more personal and original sound.
    The current line-up is:
    Andrea La Piccirella: Vocals, Guitars
    Gioacchino Vitale: Guitars
    Nicola Degli Angeli: Bass
    Andrea Ferrari: Drums
    Francesca Baraldi: Keyboards
2.WHY HAVE YOU NAMED THE BAND ALL IN VAIN? ISN’T IT A LITTLE BIT PESSIMISTIC AS A BAND NAME? I MEAN SINCE ALL IS IN VAIN WHY THEN TRY?
It’ true, the name of the band reflects a pessimistic view of life…Everyone knows how it’s hard to carry on in everyday life…we’re surrounded by shit :hypocrisy, violence, wars, every kind of crimes…if someone lives correctly, honestly it seems all in vain, it seems we cannot change this world of lies…but all of this must give us the force to react to all to give a meaning to our life…to live better our mortal existence…
3.GIVE US SOME GENERAL INFO ON THE BAND RELEASES. YOU USED TO PLAY THRASH METAL AND THEN CHANGED YOUR MUSICAL STYLE TO SWEDISH DEATH METAL. WHY? WAS THIS CHANGE NATURAL?
ALL IN VAIN released the first demo in 1998: I think it was good for the period, but if I listen to it now I think it was a bit immature and now it sounds old…”The Backside Of Humanity” was released in 2001: it contains tracks from the first demo rearranged by the new line-up and some new tracks which are more experimental and let catch a glimpse of new ideas such as a more gothic approach in some parts and a more thrashy aggressive sound. We decided to play death metal after listening In Flames “The Jester Race” and Dark Tranquillity “The Gallery”: we wanted to be aggressive (with recalls to 80’s thrash metal…our first love…) and melodic at the same time to render death metal more accessible to all musical audience.
4.POINT OUT THE DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE FIRST BAND PERIOD OF THE BAND WHEN YOU PLAYED THRASH AND THE LATEST ONE. WHICH THINGS CHANGED AND WHICH REMAINED THE SAME?
The power of riffs and the search for catchy-melodic chorus remain the same…for our maturity as songwriter the approach to each song as changed…we want to compose more easy song but with winning elements compressing all in a 4 minute song such as a more rock’n’roll feeling and search in the guitar solos structure.
5.WHAT ARE YOUR LYRICS TALKING ABOUT? WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM?
I write all lyrics: they reflects my view of life as I speaked about the name of the band…I deal with everyday life showing all the variety of feelings of a mortal soul…from lust to love, from religion to the fear of death…I think music as a convey of emotions and a way of expression, so I think a death metal band must not deal only with slashing bodies and morbid corpes! My inspiration for lyrics is Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.) of the last period (read the lyrics of “Individual…”, “Symbolic” or “The Sound…”…fantastic!
6.WHICH IS YOUR BIGGEST DREAM/AIM AS A BAND?
I would like to reach with my music as much people as possible even who have never listened to metal…crash the barriers between musical genres and…see a ALL IN VAIN video on…MTV!
7.NAME SOME OF YOUR MOST BELOVED ALBUMS AND SOME MUSICIANS YOU REALLY ADMIRE.
    In Flames: “The Jester Race”-“Whoracle”
    Dark Tranquillity: “The Gallery”-“The Mind’s I”
    Death: “Symbolic”
    Dismember: “Death Metal”
At The Gates: “Slaughter Of The Soul”
    Edge Of Sanity: “Infernal”
    Soilwork: “Chainheart Machine”
    Opeth: “My Arms, Your Hearse”
    Arch Enemy: “Burning Bridges”
    Children Of Bodom: “Hatebreeder”
For other metal genres: Iron, Dream Theater, Sentenced, Slayer, Him…
8.WHICH WAS THE BEST AND WHICH WAS THE WORST REVIEW YOU HAVE RECEIVED? ARE YOU SATISFIED BY THE FEEDBACK?  HAVE YOU SEND ANY PROMOS TO LABELS? WHICH WERE THE REACTIONS?
The best appearead on the Italian web-zine shapeless.it: the vote was 9/10.The worst appeared on the Italian metal portal metallus.it which torn to pieces the band…We had sent our promo to labels but they were not interested, but they didn’t give us any reason or suggestion to improve…
9.WHICH DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST AND WHICH IS THE WORST PART OF YOUR MUSIC? WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU NEED FURTHER DEVELOPMENT?
The best I think it’s the continue presence of melodic chorus; The worst I think it’s that we must render our sound more personal…but we’re working for this…a keyboarder entered the band to render the sound more personal and original.
10.WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WEREN’T ABLE TO COMPOSE MUSIC? WHAT MADE YOU START PLAYING AND COMPOSING YOUR WON MUSIC?
I don’t know what I would do if I’m not able to compose…I spend must of my days composing and playing music…without my guitar I would be dead! I started playing because I feeled I could convey something by music and to escape for the time of a song from everyday life…
11.WHICH SONG OF YOURS DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IDEAL TO REPRESENT YOUR WORK AND YOU’D LIKE TO MAKE A VIDEO CLIP FOR IT? HOW DO YOU IMAGINE IT TO BE?
I think it was “ANNIHILATION OF THE SUN”: it is fast, thrashy, has a catchy-melodic chorus, a 80’s hard rock solo.I imagine the video on the surface of a planet…as we play the surface begins to tremble…our music is too strong…volcanos erupting…the song ends with the explosion of the planet!
12.IF SOMEDAY YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET THE CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHICH WOULD YOUR BIGGEST QUESTION BE?
I will pray to Him to give me the true happiness…
13.IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT WOULD YOU MISS THE MOST FROM OUR TIME?
I think I’d like to travel in the medieval age…it was a dark age, but with some aspects to rediscover, I think…I would miss our everyday comfort, but most of all…my electric guitar!
14.WHAT PROLOGUE AND TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
“ALL IN VAIN…BUT NOT THESE GUYS!”
All In Vain have good probabilities to create a new innovative sound to expand death metal where we can’t imagine…
15.THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO ASK YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
