AURORA
BOREALIS
-
I THINK
AURORA BOREALIS IS A WELL KNOWN BAND IN THE METAL UNDERGROUND SCENE AND
THE THING THAT I LIKED TO THEM THE MOST IS TAHT THEY ARE VERY TALKATIVE
PERSONS WITH NO KIND OF ROCK STAR ATITTUDE.YOU ALSO CAN CONTACT THEM, THEY
WILL ANSWER TO YOU...
1.TELL US IN A FEW WORDS THE
MOST IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY. WHICH IS TODAY'S LINE UP?
-
Well I guess it was when I quit my
old band Lestregus Nosferatus otherwise I would still be with them. It
was really important for me to find a really fast techincal drummer that
would elevate the band to where I thought it belonged. Getting Tony Laureano
and Derik Roddy were really important in the bands history. AS for today
and on the newest CD it is myself and Tim Yeung (ex Hate Eternal) . The
Cd will probably be out by the time this interview is out as we are expecting
them anyday now.
2.WHAT MEANS AURORA BOREALIS? WHY DID
YOU NAME THE BAND THIS WAY? IS THERE A DEEPER MEANING FOR YOU?
-
The name just mean Northern Lights.
I just thought it was a kind of different name and it fit the band really
well. There is really no deep meaning behind it I just liked it.
3.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL
STYLE? WHICH BANDS INFLUENCED YOU AND WHICH DO YOU THINK HAVE NO PLACE
IN THE METAL MUSIC?
-
I think of our music as semi technical
death black with hints of thrash. It is very very fast and very clean.
As far as older influences I really liked some of the older thrash bands
like Sodom, Kreator and Coroner. They influenced my early days very much.
As far as newer bands Morbid angel of course and lots of black metal like
marduk, Dark funeral Etc. I listen to all kinds of msuic So I draw influences
from everywhere, but mainly the faster stuff.
4.HOW MANY RELEASES DO YOU HAVE? TELL
US SOME THINGS FOR EACH ONE OF THEM AND ESPECIALLY CONCENTRATE ON YOUR
LAST ONE. COMPARE THEM. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY?
-
Well by the time this is out we will
have four releases out. The first one was called "Mansions OF Eternity"
It was recorded at Morrisound studios and mixed by Scott Burns. The second
was Called "Praise the Archaic Lights Embrace" It was recorded at Sound
Lab with Bob Moore enginnering. the Third was "Northern Lights" I recorded
that at my studio called Nightsky. and the newest one is entitleed "Time
Unveiled" which was also recorded at Nightsky. Actually they are all pretty
much in the same Vein they are really fast and semi technical. I feel we
get better with each release. The song structures always seem to get better
as well as the general feel of the albums. In general if you like one you
will probably like them all and vice versa.
5.YOU USED TO BE IN ANOTHER BAND CALLED
LESTREGUS NOSFERATUS. CAN YOU TELL US SOME THINGS ABOUT THEM?
-
Yeah we were kind of black vampyric
metal which is maybe one of the reasons I left (along with the fact I needed
players with less Obligations and who were just a bit faster etc.) I still
am freinds with the main guy and I think he still trying to get something
going with the band. I actually put two of the original demo tracks on
the Aurora new CD. Just to kind of let everyone know kind of what we sounded
like way back then. All of our songs were really good and we almost got
a deal with listenable records but we kind of broke up and it fell through.
6.YOU SAY IN THE BAND BIO THAT YOU
PARTED WAYS WITH THEM CAUSE YOU HAD DIFFERENCIES IN THE MUSICAL DIRECTION
AND THE LYRICS. WHAT STYLE DID THEY WANT TO FOLLOW AND WHAT ABOUT THE LYRICS?
HOW DO YOU WRITE THE LYRICS? WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT AND HOW DO
YOU GENERALLY APPROACH THE THEMES? FROM A FANTASY POINT OR DO YOU SAY IT
STRAIGHT IN THE FACE?
-
Yeah that was one of the other reasons,
I really wasn't into the whole vampire thing, its hard to do something
that your not totally into. AS far as what I write about now everything
tends to be mostly based around actual happening or events and time In
history. I usually am just reading a book or something and stumble across
something that I find intersting and I will take it from there. occasionally
I will write a fictional story or a fantasy if you want to call it that
but Most of the time what I write about is real. Hence the new CD title
"Time Unveiled".
7.WHY DID YOU RECORD EACH ALBUM IN
DIFFERENT STUDIOS? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WELL KNOWN STUDIOS?
-
Well it wasn't really a concious choice
its just the way things happened. The first Cd I really wanted to come
out good because it was our first effort and I needed it to be really good.
So we went to Morrisound and got Scott Burns, at the time he was really
famous for doing death metal and such. Now I talk to people that don't
even know who he is, but I think it helped on the First CD. AS for the
second CD Derik the drummer said he knew of A killer place and it was sound
lab. Nile had recorded there as well as a few other bands whos Cd sounded
really good So I gave it a try. I wasn't too thrilled with the result but
it got the job done and most people thought the Production was OK. By the
time I was ready to record the third CD I had my own studio close to completion
and I just recorded it at my place. I think it came out really good and
all the reviews etc seem to think so as well. Now on the fourth Cd I actually
got a job working a a bigger studio that was already established and I
kind of went into business with him so naturally recorded it there. I still
call it Nighstky but its really called Nightsky / IQ because the studios
was named Iq before I came along and the owner likes to keep the name because
it was already established. We actually have Pro tools 5.1 which runs 124
real tracks with full automation and any effect etc you can imagine. Only
top grade gear. Any bands looking to record get in contact, I always cut
great rates for death or black metal.
8.CAN YOU TELL US SOME THINGS FOR YOUR
COOPERATIONS WITH TONY LAUREANO (ANGELCORPSE) AND DERIK RODDY (HATE ETERNAL)?
YOU HAVE WORKED WITH PEOPLE QUITE FAMOUS IN THE METAL SCENE.
-
Sure, When I quit the band Lestregus
Nosferatus I went to Tampa Fl to look for better players, there I started
work with Jim the Drummer for the Old band Brutality, that really wasn't
working out because he wasn't fast enough and he took way to many breaks,
but anyway I heard another drummer in the next practice bay over and it
was Tony. Later that night I called up Lee from monstrosity and asked if
he knew who that guy was and he happened to be at Leses house. I set up
a meeting the next day and played him some of the stuff and he liked it
and agreed to do the first CD. He was excellent but the next Cd he was
super busy with Angel corpse and we couldn't find the time to get together
for the second Cd So I called up a old freind Derik Roddy. We used to play
in a band together a long time ago called Gothic Outcasts. He was also
into the music and agreed to do the second CD. He also was a spectacular
drummer he then did the third Cd as well. Now he is in Hate Eternal as
well as a few other side projects and he lives in Florida and I live in
Maryland so again it is very hard to find the time to get together. This
time I called up Tim Yeung who was an Ex Hate Eternal memeber and he also
had heard the stuff and was eager to fill the position. I have been really
fortunate in getting great drummers all three of them are phenomenal and
I would love to work with any one of them anytime.
9.HAVE YOU DONE ANY LIVE SHOWS? CAN
YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL AURORA BOREALIS LIVE?
-
Aurora Borealis is really a studio
band. I can't afford to book a tour myself and with my studio work it would
be hard to go. Don't get me wrong if a label would pay we would gladly
go but I just can't do it myself. Also all the drummers I have used are
in different states so to get our schedule matched up is hard.
10.HOW ARE YOU THINKING TO PROMOTE
YOUR WORK?
-
I will just promote it the same way
I always have through zines and radio etc. Great reviews have really contributed
a lot. I can't thank the zines enough. I feel I have done a great job thus
far and now we have the added bonus of a label behind us as well. Die Hard
music did a pretty good job at promoting the latest re release they did
for us on Northern Lights. So hopefully on the new one they will continue
to help out.
11.WHICH IS THE BEST PART IN YOUR MUSIC
AND IN THE BAND IN GENERAL AND WHICH THING DO YOU THINK YOU SHOULD CORRECT?
WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU NEED IMPROVEMENT?
-
I always think the best parts are the
drums, without that you have nothing. I also like the riffs a lot that
we use. I am always trying to improve on production values. All of our
productions are good I just want to make them sound better. With each album
we have achived that and we will continue to get better all the time.
12.MANY EXTREME METAL BANDS EXPRESS
RACISTIC IDEOLOGIES. WHICH ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
-
I don't have a real view on that, there
are a lot of blacks i dont like but also a lot of whites I don't like either.
There are people in every race who are morons but you just have to deal
with them.
13.IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME,
WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO?
-
Most likely to ancient Egypt right
around 900 to 1000 BC maybe even to the old mayan civilizations about the
same time period. But If I could go back in time I would visit every time
period in each of its eras. I definitly wouldnt stay long but just to be
there for a short periods would be nice.
14.IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE ABILITY TO
CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
-
It would take a long time to answer
that one. I cant even begin to think about that, it would probably take
me months to gather my thoughts before I answered that.
15.HAVE YOU READ ANY INTERESTING BOOKS
LATELY? HAVE YOU WATCHED AN INTERESTING MOVIE?
-
Yes I have. Actually I read all the
time most recenlty I just finished a four book sci fi story called The
River World. Its about everyone on earth who has ever lived being reborn
the same day on a new planet. Very good books. My favorite of all time
are of course the Lord of the Rings Books, I have read those about four
times each. Right now I am reading the History of Magic and the Occult.
I'm not into that kind of stuff I just find it interesting to read it.
I could talk about books for a long time as well.
16.WHAT TITLE AND PROLOGUE WOULD YOU
LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
-
I would like for you to make it whater
you think is fitting.
17.WHICH IS THE BEST AND WHICH IS THE
WORST REVIEW YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
-
Its too hard to pick the best because
we get great reviews all the time.Literally we get one bad review out of
100 usually. I'm glad people seem to like it that much. The worst I can
think of was from a guy who usually reviews main stream stuff so he wasn't
used to black metal. I won't mention his petty zine but I didn't take it
too seriusly because were listed right above Bon Jovis new CD which he
absolutely loved. Die Hard music sends to some strange places but it does
help get the name out, so I can't complain.
18.TELL US SOME THINGS ON YOUR COOPERATION
WITH DIE HARD MUSIC...
-
Well I sent them a CD and they liked
it so they signed us for the re-release of our last CD as well as the release
of the new one as well. Actually it will end up being a release also because
I am releasing it first in the US on my label called Nightsky Prod. So
they will get the Europe release as well as the rest of the world. They
did a good job on the last CD like I Said So this should be good for us
as well.
19.IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE
