BLOODAXE

BLOODAXE are from Canada and they play heathen Black Metal, in the tradition of good old Norwegian style. They take inspiration from their ancestors way of life, the VIKINGS and with their music pay a tribute to them.

1. HELLO, STARTING IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED IF YOU GAVE US SOME INFO REGARDING THE BAND’S BIO AND INTRODUCE THE CURRENT LINE UP. 
  • Bloodaxe was baptized by the North Winds on May 17th 2000 in Northern Ontario, Canada.  Myself Nordavinden (guitars, bass, vokills, piano) and Rati (drums) We rehearsed for a period of 3 weeks and then recorded the “In Battle” Demo CDR. It was a horrible production due to the fact the “studio” was not well equipped nor was the “engineer” adequate.  Then we recorded the full length “Bloodthrone” 7 months later, a better production but still not good enough.  We recorded the majority of “Raping the Ancient” in February 2002.  It was and still is being delayed due to numerous factors.  People describe us as “Black Metal”, but we have and always will be VIKING METAL!!!!  Viking Metal in its true form.  We are the FIRST Viking Metal to come from the new world!!!!
2. IS “BLOODTHRONE” YOUR FIRST RELEASE? HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERIZE YOUR SOUND? WHICH BANDS INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST? 
  • PAY ATTENTION!!!! Bloodthrone is the first full length. A demo CDR was recorded in 2000.  The Bloodaxe sound is a fucking wall of HATRED and CHAOS!!!  We were NEVER influenced by any band…we represent the fury and hatred and the “True instinct of mankind”!!!!
3. WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS DID YOU HAVE TO CONFRONT DURING THE RECORDINGS OF THIS ALBUM? 
  • Studio equipment problems. We had to rush through the entire recording process; it was a nightmare, however not as bad as the “recording” of Raping the Ancient!!  I suffered a severe cut to my left middle finger, and it killed to play the guitar tracks.  After I finished my guitar tracks my guitar literally fell apart, the back was all held together with duct tape!!  The drum mics we ordered were delayed and came in late so we only had so much time to record the drums…. just a fucking mess and it never turned out as we had hoped.  Even so it was and still is vastly SUPERIOR to most releases!!!
4. YOU ARE PREPARING A NEW ALBUM UNDER THE TITLE “RAPING THE ANCIENT”. WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED? WHICH REASONS POSTPONED THIS RELEASE? WILL IT BE A CONCEPT ALBUM?
  • We began the recording in February 2002, the entire recording was pretty much completed then a lot of things happened to delay the finishing of it. The studio drummer had some major problems with the law and some other “things”.  I almost severed my right index finger and I had to have reconstructive surgery to reattach the nerves, the studio was sold then re bought so our tracks were held hostage for about 6 months…Now it’s almost set to release…hoping for a late November 03.   RAPING THE ANCIENT is about the rape of the Norse peoples in some aspects.   The archeology of their remains, ships and mounds.  This release is dedicated to the GREAT Norwegian archeologist Helge Ingstad.  He was the one who discovered VINLAND and proved the settlement existed in NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA.
5. COMPARING THESE 2 RELEASES “BLOODTHRONE” AND “RAPING THE ANCIENT” WHICH ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES? IN A FEW WORDS WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT MUSICALLY FROM YOUR NEW ALBUM?
  • Bloodaxe is Bloodaxe…we have a unique style sound and attitude, we can’t try to play or sound like anyone nor can they sound like us.  The new album will be DEFINITE Bloodaxe.  RAPING THE ANCIENT has a better guitar sound, due to the fact that I had to borrow money to purchase a new guitar.  Over all the album has a better sound production; you can actually hear all the notes I’m playing.  The music remains intense and brutally fast, however there are some surprises!!
6. ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE THEMES THAT YOU LIKE TO “HURT” THROUGH YOUR LYRICS ARE THE VIKINGS. WHAT DO YOU FIND SO APPEALING IN THIS THEMATOLOGY? ANY OTHER THINGS THAT YOU LIKE TO SING ABOUT? 
  • Vikings are my heritage, well at least one very interesting aspect of being Norse.  I was born in Canada, but come from pure Norwegian blood.  Norway is closer to me then Canada ever will be.  The Viking era is a very interesting time period.  My ancestors where the first people to reach the shores of the new world, they developed and left a lot behind them.  A very interesting mythology.  Although, the majority of my lyrics revolve around nature and it’s fury.  And of course ripping off peoples heads, raping, destroying.the fun things in life.
7. HOW DID THE FANS AND PRESS RECEIVE SO FAR “BLOODTHRONE”? DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY COPIES IT HAS SOLD?
  • We have no fans.  It seems most reviewers liked it.  I believe we have sold 10 copies of the Bloodthrone Cd.  We made ALL our family and friends buy copies.  Obviously we don’t have too many friends!!!
8. CANADA AND IN GENERAL THE U.S. WAS NEVER KNOWN FOR ITS BLACK METAL SCENE. WE CONSIDER THIS GENRE AS MAINLY EUROPEAN. HOW ARE THINGS OVER THERE NOW? ARE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN LISTENING TO THIS KIND OF MUSIC?
  • Listen, I have no FUCKING interest in what people are listening to…  I HATE PEOPLE!!!!  Fuck Europe, FUCK Canada and FUCK AMERICA!!!!
9. THE LINE UP OF BLOODAXE CONSISTS OF 2 PERSONS ONLY. WHY IS THAT? DO YOU WANT TO ADD OTHER MEMBERS AS WELL AND IT’S HARD TO FIND THE RIGHT ONES? 
  • Hahah…  Well we are located in the middle of fucking nowhere, so musicians of ANY kind are almost impossible to find. I’m from a town of under 2,500 people.  If you do find anyone they are either incompetent, or play in a style other then extreme metal.
10. HAVE YOU DONE ANY LIVE SHOWS OR ARE YOU A STUDIO BAND ONLY? DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE APPEARANCES? DO YOU HIRE SESSION MUSICIANS?
  • No live shows have been preformed nor do I believe any ever will take place.  If we “hired” other musicians to play live, we would obviously not be Bloodaxe anymore.  
11. I THINK THAT ONE OF YOU ALSO HAS THE LABEL WHITE LEGENDS. AM I RIGHT? DOES THIS LABEL INTEND TO RELEASE ONLY YOUR ALBUMS OR DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO SIGN OTHER BANDS AS WELL? PLEASE GIVE US SOME INFO ABOUT YOUR LABEL.
  • I’m a silent partner in the label.  Caillech is mostly the “owner”.  For right now because of financial problems only Bloodaxe will be released through this label.  Eventually we would like to release others, but it appears most extreme metal these days is very watered down.  So stop fucking writing and asking if you can send in your “Hardcore” band’s demo. Because we will not accept it fuckhead!!!!!  FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Only REAL metal, ambient and FOLK!!!
12. DO YOU LIKE READING BOOKS? WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS AND WRITERS? 
  • The Volsung sagas…  Mostly Edda’s and Norse Mythology and archeological books.  Not much time to read though.
13. IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET THE CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK HIM?
  • I wouldn’t say anything to it.  I would walk up to it and put a bullet between its eyes, to make sure it doesn’t make the same mistake twice!!!!!!
14. IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO AND WHY?
  • The future…I want to see my death.  I want to see how violent it will be.
15. YOU ARE GRANTED ONE WISH. WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT?
  • I wish this interview would end soon!  Seriously.
16. IF THERE WAS NO MUSIC IN THE WORLD, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD DO? 
  • I would be a Serial killer, or maybe just a killer; hit man…killing is necessary and fuels my desire for destruction.  KILL THE WEAK!!!!
