CRAZY
SADIE
-
ENGLAND
FOR MANY YEARS NOW CONSIDERED A "DEAD GROUND" FOR THE HEAVY METAL MUSIC.
...BUT LATELY THE THINGS CHANGED. U.K HAVE TO DISPLAY A GREAT VARIETY OF
METAL BANDS IN EVERY GENRE. CRAZY SADIE, NOW, PLAY THRASHCORE WITH SOME
INDUSTRIAL ELEMENTS. A BAND THAT SURE HAS THE POTENTIALS TO DO SOMETHING
GREAT. JOHN OF CRAZY SADIE CHATED WITH US AND HERE IS WHAT WE 'VE GOT...
1.FIRST OF ALL MY CONGRATULATIONS FOR
YOUR VERY GOOD DEMO. NOW GIVE US A SHORT BAND BIO AND NAME THE CURRENT
LINE UP.
-
Thank you!, Band Biog: Crazy Sadie
are a four piece metal band based out of Thurrock Essex. Originally
formed by the Shepherd brothers Russ and Wilf in 1997 as a three piece
industrial based act featuring Russ on Vocals, Wilf on Guitars and Russ's
old squeeze Karen on Bass, samples and a drum machine for the purpose of
performing at that years outdoor Thurrock Music Festival. After the riotous
response they received at that show from the ever mental TMF crowd they
decided to make the band an on going concern. This led to the recording
of two demo's at Southend's Nightfly Studios including the much talked
about Dial C For Crazy and the follow up Crazy Sadie e.p.which also featured
Lloyd on Keyboards. Since then the music has become more focused, loosing
the sample's, synths and drum machine for a razor edge guitar approach
leading to a tightening up of the Sadie sound and the recruitment of the
ex Quick-Hi rhythm section John on Bass and skin pounder Colin the bands
first live drummer. The Sadie sound draws from an eclectic range of influences
from Ministry to Primus, Prong to Metallica and Slayer to God Lives under
water it takes the best parts of each of these to form something new and
exciting. Captured perfectly by John Hannon (Hundred Reasons, Earthtone
9, Understand, Woe, Kids Near Water, Stand Off etc..) at Mushroom Studio's
for the new mini album Middle Finger Technology, which showcases six tracks
of pure razor edge guitars, pummelling drums and mature song writing.
Crazy Sadie Are:

2.BEFORE CRAZY SADIE YOU HAD ANOTHER
BAND AND YOU WERE PLAYING INDUSTRIAL METAL. YOU HAVE RELEASED 2 DEMOS WITH
THIS BAND. TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT IT AND WHY YOU'VE CHANGED YOUR STYLE
TO THRASHCORE AND THE NAME OF THE BAND? DON'T YOU THINK THAT THIS MIGHT
HAVE DISAPPOINTED OR CONFUSED YOUR PREVIOUS FANS?
-
The other band you mentioned was still
called Crazy Sadie but we worked more with sample's and machine especially
as we used a drum machine instead of a person. This version of the band
existed for about five years and I think we really just came to a crossroads
in what we wanted to achieve with the sound. The drum machine was limiting
to a certain degree so the band decided to ask ex Quick-Hi drummer Colin
to join in the hope that it would add another dynamic. I guess we did run
the risk on loosing any fanbase that we had at that point but we fully
believe that we have to play the music we feel is right for us and the
results of that is Middle Finger Technology. We wanted to somehow progress
with our music but still keep the simple industrial approach to the songs
too.
3.THE BOOKLET OF YOUR CD DOESN'T INCLUDE
THE LYRICS. CAN YOU TELL US WHICH THEMES YOU LIKE TO "HURT" THROUGH YOUR
LYRICS?
-
We deliberatly didn't include the lyrics
on the record sleeve as we would like anyone listening to the songs to
make there own conclusions and if they relate to it in any way then that's
fine with us. The inspiration behine the words comes from all around though,
there are no directs themes as such as they are more a reaction to our
every day surroundings.
4.DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH YOUR
SONGS? DO YOU WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE THINK OR CREATE EMOTIONS?
-
We mainly make the music that we like
to hear and are main goal really is to make good music that anyone can
dance to really. If it makes you want to move or headbang then that's were
we want to be heading which I think shows in out very engeretic live shows.
5.METAL SCENE IN THE U.K. SEEMED TO
BE DEAD THESE LAST FEW YEARS. RECENTLY I'VE LISTENED TO MANY BANDS FROM
OVER THERE PLAYING METAL. HOW DO YOU SEE THINGS THERE? DO YOU THINK THAT
THIS INTEREST FOR HEAVY METAL IS JUST A "TREND" OR IS IT HERE TO STAY?
-
The UK Metal scene goes through different
periods I guess depending on what's popular or not and I hear that heavy
music is in a resurgence at the moment. To us though the scene has always
been there and a lot of the bands now making a name for themselves have
been around on that scene now for quiet sometime. I think for such a small
country the UK is pretty spoilt for choice though with great bands like
Miocene, Coma Kai, Brutal Deluxe, Breed 77 and many more playing local
venues around London.
6.TECHNOLOGY SEEMS TO INTEREST YOU
A LOT. ARE YOU AFRAID OF THIS EVOLUTION? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT MAN DEPENDS
ON TECHNOLOGY MORE AND MORE AND THAT HE MIGHT LOSE THE ABILITY TO SURVIVE
ON HIS OWN?
-
The technology theme to the last cd
stems for from the facination of it, we are all big gadgit freaks and we
try to embrace technology where ever we can. I guess we are all becoming
more and more reliant on this technology to fullfill our needs but I don;t
really see that as such a bad thing. Personally I work
in I.T. as a job and I wouldn't like to be seperated from my computer for
too long lol.
7.DO YOU REMEMBER THE WAY YOU FELT
THE FIRST TIME YOU GOT ON STAGE? HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR A BAND TO PERFORM
LIVE? DO YOU REMEMBER ANY WEIRD INCIDENTS OCCURING TO YOU WHILST YOU WERE
PERFORMING LIVE?
-
Personally I have never really had
a problem with nerves before going on stage, generally I feel energised
by the impending performance as I love every minute of it. I remember my
first ever gig though which was at The Rock Garden in London with the band
Quick-Hi and all my friends and family were there which made things a little
nerve shredding but I soon forgot about it due to the fact the drummer
turned up an hour late so we had to rush around so that we could still
play.
8.WHICH IS THE WORST NIGHTMARE AND
THE BEST DREAM YOU'VE EVER SEEN? COULD YOU DESCRIBE IT TO US?
-
My dreams often tend to be a bit strange
at the best of times, they usually seem to be implanted by David Lynch
or something lol.
9.WHICH WERE THE REACTIONS OF THE FANS
AND PRESS ON YOUR LATEST RELEASE? DID YOU HAVE ANY PROPOSAL FROM A LABEL?
-
The reaction to the new cd has been
amazing we have barely scratched the surface when it comes to promoting
it but we seem to keep selling out of them everytime we get more
burnt. Overall the press we have had so far has been great too, I think
we have only had one negative review really. As far as record labels go
we haven't heard anything as of yet but at the same time we really haven't
courted them either as we feel that the MFT cd is just the begging for
us. We really want to get more live shows and reviews under our belt first
before we even consider going down that route.
10.HOW DO YOU REACT WHEN YOU READ A
BAD REVIEW THAT EXPLAINS THE REASONS AND IT'S NOT "MEAN"?
-
The one "bad" review we have had was
also a really constructive one too which actually was a big help. I think
though that you have to take bad reviews in your stride cause after all
you can't please everyone can you.
11.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A FAN TO CONVINCE
HIM TO BUY YOUR RELEASE INSTEAD OF SOMETHING ELSE?
-
Well you can have a cd for free to
start with which is a lot better than your average large American band
lol. Seriously though I think that it's really worth a listen cause we
all play this music cause we generally love it and have a passion for it
which I think shows throughout.
12.YOU ARE GRANTED ONE WISH. WHAT WOULD
YOU LIKE TO CHANGE?
-
Fashion!, What a pointless exercise
that is! lol
13.IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET THE
CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK HIM?
-
Is this life a test?. It sometimes
seems we are being tested to see how we react and I 'd like to know if
that has any baring on our lives in the long run.
14.RECENTLY THE U.K. WENT TO WAR AGAINST
IRAQ. WHICH ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
-
This is really a sore point with me
right now cause I generally believe that the only reason the UK went into
this war was because the country felt obliged to help out the US
15.IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO GO BACK
IN TIME, WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT
WOULD YOU MISS THE MOST FROM OUR TIMES?
-
For me I would much prefer to go into
the future as I always try to look forward rather than back. Otherwise
I guess I would love to have been my age during the late 60's early 70's
at the hight of Rock and Roll!.
16.WHAT TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS INTERVIEW
TO HAVE?
-
Shootin the shit with Sadie lol
17.THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO ASK
YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Thank you for listening. You also complied
a great range of questions there too. Cheers John @ Crazy Sadie
