CUBICAL SPHERE is a new
band from Greece and I dare to say that they paly a kind of music that
we don't listen usually from Greek bands. They combine Death metal music
with jazz and progressive elements. Here in few words Nikos and Simos the
founding members of the group in a few words try to give us some more information.

1.HELLO GUYS, YOUR MUSIC IS REALLY COOL AND
VERY EXPERIMENTAL, SO HOW AND WHEN DID YOU CONCEIVE THE IDEA OF CREATING
THE BAND CUBICAL SPHERE? ALSO TELL US THE CURRENT LINE-UP OF THE GROUP...
First of all,thanks for the compliment. Cubical
Sphere were created by Simos and Nikos 2 1/2 years ago.The current line-up
is: Jim(guitar), Simos(bass) and Nikos(guitar,vocals).
2.YOUR NAME, CUBICAL SPHERE IS A CONTROVERSY,
CAUSE THESE 2 SHAPES ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT. IS ANYTHING THAT YOU WANT TO
SUGGEST WITH THIS NAME? MAYBE THAT YOUR MUSIC IS A MIXING OF PHENOMENICALLY
NON COMPATIBLE MUSICAL STYLES?
As you say,we thought that this name expresses
very well the mixing of controversial music styles that we had in mind.The
name is quite "progressive" as a meaning (the well-known mathematical problem
of turning the circle into a square) and we found it apropriate for
the band.
3.DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR MUSIC PROGRESSIVE OR TECHNICAL
DEATH METAL? DON'T YOU THINK THAT THE TERM PROGGRESSIVE IS A LITTLE BIT
ARROGANT, CAUSE THIS TITLE CAN BE CLAIMED ONLY BY GROUPS THAT HAVE REALLY
SUCCEEDED AND HAVE TAKEN METAL MUSIC A STEP FORWARD? YOU ARE ONLY IN THE
BEGINNING OF YOUR CAREER? TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT..
What we play belongs to the category of the
so-called progressive death metal but we think the labels in music depend
on everybody's ears.
4.THE BIGGEST PROBLEM OF THE BAND, I THINK, IS
THE USE OF A DRUM - MACHINE. SO IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO FIND A GOOD DRUMMER
FOR THE KIND OF MUSIC YOU PLAY?
It is VERY difficult to find a drummer for
this kind of music. We try to find one since the day we formed this band
and the main problem was always that none of the drummers we found was
willing to give his best.
5.SINCE THIS IS YOUR FIRST DEMO, CAN YOU TELL
US WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH IT? WHICH ARE THE THINGS THAT YOU WANT
TO AVOID IN YOUR NEXT RELEASE AND DID THE CREATION OF THE DEMO MAKE YOU
MORE EXPERIENCED AND MORE FOCUSED ON THE BAND'S FUTURE POTENTIAL, ABILITIES
AND MUSICAL "NEEDS"?
With this demo, first of all, we like to share
our music with others. If there is some "response" we'd like to play live
and do something more "serious". Through this recording we've learned a
lot about the difficulty of such an effort,what it takes conidering the
musical ability and patience. But mostly we're very happy we lived the
experience.
6.OK NOW I WOULD LIKE YOU TO TELL ME THE BANDS
THAT INFLUENCED YOU TO CREATE YOUR SOUND AND NAME FIVE OF YOUR ALL TIME
FAVORITE ALBUMS...
The basic influence was from the prog-death
area, meaning DEATH, CYNIC, ATHEIST, other prog stuff such as PAIN OF SALVATION,
FATES WARNING and also some jazz and fusion. Nikos' 5 favorite albums are:
FOCUS(CYNIC),SPHERES(PESTILENCE),HUMAN(DEATH),NO MORE COLOR(CORONER) and
IMPRESSIONS(JOHN COLTRANE).
Simos:LATERALUS(TOOL),INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS(DEATH),A
PLEASANT SHADE OF GREY(FATES WARNING),UNQUESTIONABLE PRESENCE(ATHEIST),KID
A(RADIOHEAD).
Jim:OPERATION MINDCRIME(QUEENSRYCHE), ARISE(SEPULTURA),
FOCUS(CYNIC), INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS(DEATH), AND JUSTICE FOR ALL(METALLICA).
7.THE DEMO YOU HAVE RELEASED INCLUDES 3 SONGS.
SO CAN YOU TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT THEM? I THINK THE READERS WILL FIND
VERY INTERESTING THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG KORDAX. ALSO TELL US ABOUT THE
LYRICS OF THE OTHER SONG...
The first song "Kordax" refers to the ancient
Greek mythology. Kordax was the dance of the Satyrs. The second song,"Spiral
Integration", is a different point of view of human's life,viewed as an
endless circle, the center of which is the goal of self-realisation deprived
of ethical restrictions set by society. The last track("Jazzolis") is basically
a jazzy version of "Spiral Integration", much shorter.
8.HAVE YOU SENT YOUR DEMO TO OTHER FANZINES? WERE
THE REACTIONS THAT YOU RECEIVED POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE? WHICH WAS THE BEST
AND WHICH THE WORST REVIEW THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED TILL NOW?
We've sent the CD to other fanzines and magazines
but we haven't received an answer yet. We have generally received positive
comments from people we gave the demo.
9.SIMOS, YOU ARE ALSO A MEMBER OF TRANSCENDING
BIZZARE. SO CAN YOU TELL ME IF THE GROUP HAS ANY NEW MATERIAL READY AND
WHEN DO THEY PLAN TO RELEASE IT?
We're working on some new material at this
time and also seek for some live performances.
