Death
Du Jour
Death Du Jour is a band
from Finland that has recently released its debut album under the English
label Golden Lake Productions. Those of you that have followed the band's
steps from their previous demo cd entitled "Gamashinoch" will already know
that we are dealing here with a quality death/grincore band... The result
is guaranteed and the only way you'll lose is by not getting "Fragments
Of Perdition", which is in many ways unique and original! Need to learn
more? Then read below...
1. FIRST OF ALL CONGRATULATIONS FOR “FRAGMENTS
OF PERDITION”! SO, THIS IS YOUR DEBUT CD AND I’D LIKE YOU TO TELL ME HOW
YOU FEEL WATCHING YOUR FIRST (UNDER A LABEL) CD BEING RELEASED.
PB: Thanks! In common it feels all okay. Overall
the package looks really good and I am happy it’s finally done and everything’s
going fine at the moment with all the stuff concerning the cd. Except that
I am still waiting for all the fame and fortune…
2. I THINK THAT “FRAGMENTS OF PERDITION” IS AN
EXCELLENT SAMPLE OF DEATH/GRIND WITH SOME QUITE TECHNICAL EDGES AND A MORBID
MOOD. HOWEVER, IT’S ALWAYS INTERESTING TO FIND OUT WHAT THE CREATORS FEEL
AND THINK OF THEIR “OFFSPRING”…
PB: In overall this bastard of an album is
made really fast and with intensity that there are certain minor things
that I am not too happy about but comparing to those things I can’t be
disappointed especially because we maintained this indefinite ‘live-mood’
all through the album like we intended to.
3. BEFORE THIS ALBUM YOU RELEASED LAST YEAR A
DEMO CD UNDER THE TITLE “GAMASHINOCH”, WHICH WAS AN AMAZING PIECE OF WORK
AS WELL. WHICH ARE, ACCORDING TO YOU, THE MAIN SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCED
BETWEEN THESE 2 CDS?
PB: Speaking about generic conventions the
overall style of the band is quite similar in both releases. In Gamashinoch
we used digital equipments, triggers and stuff so that made the soundscape
a bit ‘industrialized’ and cold. This time with Fragments of Perdition
we used both, analogic and digital equipments in studio so the soundscape
is much more natural and warmer this time. We also recorded the album all
in different way this second time; in a first time all instruments were
recorded separately one by one and this time we recorded all instruments
in a same time. Of course we’ve also developed as musicians in between
these two releases, so Fragments of Perditions sounds a bit more mature
–if it’s proper to use that kind of term in this value.
4. THE WHOLE ALBUM IS GREAT, HOWEVER, A THING
I’VE NOTICED – WELL ACTUALLY A DRAWBACK THAT I’D LIKE TO MENTION – IS THE
SOUND OF THE RHYTHM SECTION OF THE DRUMS, THAT SOUNDS A BIT POOR. ARE YOU
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRODUCTION OR NOT? ARE YOU FULLY SATISFIED WITH THE
FINAL RESULT OR IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO CHANGE?
PB:Like I said; we recorded the album really
fast –actually the time we used in recording all the instruments was less
than an hour and we didn’t use triggers which revealed to be the major
problem with the mixing of the drums. Since we used only microphones there
was this “overflood” inbetween toms and kickdrum and we didn’t have time
to cut all the flood out so we didn’t have possibility to get this certain
‘attack’ to the drums. This way we did what we could without a need to
start the recordings all over again. Of course there are some things that
I’d like to change but nothing serious, even with some minor failures it’s
a good album.
5. HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING SIGNED BY A LABEL? I
MEAN, HAVE YOUR GOALS CHANGED OR PERHAPS YOUR PRIORITIES OR NEEDS AS A
BAND? ARE YOU SATISFIED BY GOLDEN LAKE PRODUCTIONS? WITH WHICH CRITERIA
DID YOU SIGN WITH THEM AND ARE YOU SATISFIED?
PB: I don’t think that anything has changed
in those values. Yes, we’re satisfied with Golden Lake Productions; they
just seemed to be an honest label and didn’t promise anything excessive.
Moreover our deal is more like gentlemen’s deal than the usual business
deal. Of course the deal is only one album contract so we already know
that we’re not stuck in any ridiculous slavery-contracts of a lifetime.
6. TELL US NOW A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE LYRICAL
CONTENT OF THE CD. YOU ARE A DEATH/GRIND BAND SO, I SUPPOSE THE TOPICS
YOU DEAL WITH ARE OBVIOUS. WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER WRITING ABOUT POLITICAL
OR SOCIAL MATTERS?
PB: Obvious in some matters, like how some
circumstances are conveyed but that is the simple appearance for the whole
scheme. There is this pragmatic level through the whole lyrical content.
This content has actually one political aspect since most values in this
society are political. I don’t mean anything concrete with governments
and that kind of politics but more like the relationships that concern
every value. In the relationships there is also this social matter but
that is a way to direct thing when considering the usual meanings how political
and social matters are understood.
7. WHAT AMAZED ME (AND I HAVE TO CONGRATULATE
YOU FOR THIS), IS THE ARTWORK OF THE CD!!! IT’S EXTREMELY CLEVER AND THE
FIRST TIME I SEE SUCH A THING! WHOSE IDEA WAS IT AND WHO TOOK THOSE PHOTOS?
WHO ARE THE “PROTAGONISTS”? HAVE YOU FACED ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHICAL
CONTENT IN ANY COUNTRY?
PB: I represented the basics of this idea
for others. We just processed the whole thing all together with band, the
photographer and the graphic designer. There hasn’t been any serious problems,
some accusations for us being pedophiles, perverts and stuff. Nothing serious,
just some feeble-minded morons whining about this kind of content. That
kind of persons who think its disgrace for all women if they see a naked
woman in a television. Ye know...
8. SO, I AM REALLY CURIOUS TO FIND OUT WHY YOU
HAVEN’T INCLUDED THE LYRICS IN THE BOOKLET AND INSTEAD YOU’VE CHOSEN TO
“NARRATE” A STORY WITH THOSE PHOTOS…A MURDER STORY TO BE MORE SPECIFIC.
PLEASE TELL ME SOME MORE THINGS ABOUT IT… DO THESE PHOTOS MEAN THAT WE
ARE DEALING WITH THE FIRST CONCEPT DEATH/GRIND METAL ALBUM?
PB: Concept might be a bit too framed word
but you are not wrong either. There is this one basic bottomline in all
themes of the tracks so that’s the concept but lyrics don’t follow the
context of this booklet-story. It is more like some minor and maybe misleading
representation is chosen from each track and we combined those representations
as a strip of photos. This makes separate point of view than on lyrics,
if both are combined together it’s something like two different concepts
combined in one metamorphic concept. So, in some ways this is concept album
but not in its usual meanings.
9. WHICH ARE THE AMBITIONS AND DREAMS YOU WANT
TO MAKE TRUE THROUGH DEATH DU JOUR?
PB: I must say I don’t know, I’ll tell you
when I have faced that reality!
10. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS? NOW
THAT YOU ARE SIGNED TO A LABEL FROM THE U.S. ARE THERE ANY DISCUSSIONS
FOR ANY LIVE APPEARANCES OVER THERE?
PB: U.S.? You mean U.K.? That would be great
to play over there (both in U.S. and U.K.) but there haven’t been any discussions
or negotiations so far. We have already played 2 minitours and some
single shows this far. Of course we’re always looking for new live-dates...
11. IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO INVITE FAMOUS MUSICIANS
TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUR ALBUM, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
PB: I think it is better if we just do everything
by ourselves and don’t mess with some greater persons.
12. WHICH ARE THE MOST CHARACTERISTIC EMOTION,
IDEA AND IMAGE THAT PASS FROM YOUR MIND AND YOU THINK REPRESENT THE MAIN
ESSENCE OF “FRAGMENTS OF PERDITION”?
PB: Quite a hard one… maybe some fragments
of chaos, satiric grin, camp-attitude, affective brutality and violence.
13. BY THE WAY, HOW DID YOU COME WITH THIS TITLE?
WHICH ARE THESE FRAGMENTS OF PERDITION AND IS THERE ANYTHING IN SPECIFIC
YOU ARE IMPLYING HERE?
PB: Personnels of the band perform the fragments,
when united and processing, it is perdition. Also this whole album represents
perdition and single tracks are then the fragments. Other person in booklet
is the process of perdition; each picture is a fragment that this process
brings the second person into the perdition.
14. THANK YOU! THESE LINES ARE YOURS…
PB: Thank you and remember that there is metal
and then there is Death Metal!
