DENIAL
PRICE
-
The pain, the hard times, the difficulties
are enough to disappoint many people who want to involve with music and
make them quit and get away. It needs a lot of courage, strength and a
real, deep love for your music to keep doing this for over a decade now!
The cost? Sometimes is greater but listening to your music, your efforts
taking life is worth figthing for. It's priceless... Here, at least for
me, we have a real legend of the Greek heavy/power-progressive scene. All
that comes to my mind is respect.
1.INFORM US ON THE BAND HISTORY.WHO
ARE DENIAL PRICE?HOW WAS THE WHOLE IDEA CREATED?
-
The whole thing begun in 1986 and after
some gigs during 1987, the band came out with a new line-up, that meant
to stay until 1990. The line-up was: Panos Dimitriou - voice, Chriss Tsaves
- guitar, Kostas Tsaves - drums and Jim Buurnakas - bass. In 1990 came out
our first demo, including two studio recordings of the songs "Blood On
Silver Stone" and "On The Edge" and two live recordings. In 1990 also the
band split-up, cause the members decided to go on different directions.
In 1992 we came back with a new line-up, featuring: Panos Dimitriou - voice,
Bill Garagoukoulis - guitar, Kostas Gagalis - bass and Kostas Ketoglidis
- drums. Some gigs took place, before we sstarted the recordings of "Farewell
Within Remains" in 1993-1994, which finally came out in 2000. The Denial
Price always was a band of friends, who share their love for this music
and that's why they carry on so far, until now, despite the hard times
they've passed through.
2.HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THIS BAND NAME?
WHICH IS THE PRICE YOU DENY? AMONG WHICH OTHERS NAMES HAVE YOU CHOSEN THIS
ONE?
-
The name of the band came out from
some lyrics I wrote and it was the only one we had in our minds from the
first moment. The meaning is, the prize of the denial, we all pay when
we deny what is true inside of us.
3.DO YOU THINK THAT IF YOU WERE FROM
ANOTHER COUNTRY IN THE NORTH, THINGS WOULD BE EASIER FOR YOU? WHU DO YOU
THINK GREECE IS ONLY FAMOUS FOR ITS EXTREME METAL SCENE AND NO ONE TALKS
ABOUT THE HEAVY,POWER AND PROGRESSIVE SCENE, THOUGH WE HAVE MANY AMAZING
BANDS?
-
I don't think Greece is famous only
for its extreme metal bands. I believe we have power-progressive bands
who have a very good name out of the country. Of course things would be
very easier for all the Greek metal bands, if they were from a northern
country, but I think that the things are getting better and better here.
We just have to try more.
4.NAME AND SAY A FEW WORLDS FOR ALL
THE BAND'S RELEASES.
-
The band's releases are :
-
A. The 1990 demo includes these
songs:
-
Blood On Silver
Stone (studio)
-
On The Edge (studio)
and
-
R.I.P. (intro)/
Crucified Again (live) and
-
Return To Darkness
(live)
-
The live recordings
took place in Thessaloniki in 1989 with Rubicon and Deceptor.
-
B. The "Farewell Within Remains"
mini cd, which came out with many problems and delays, caused by the hard
times we had.
5.TELL US FEW THINGS IN GENERAL FOR
YOUR LATEST WORK "FAREWELL WITHIN REMAINS". HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
MUSIC, WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER FROM THE RECORDINGS?
-
What I remember most of the recordings
is that we were trying so hard to find some good sound, having almost nothing
for equipment or no good quality stuff. It needed a lot of patience. After
all, what came out, I believe is classic heavy metal with some drops of
power, epic and progressive stuff.
6.WHAT ARE THE LYRICS TALKING ABOUT?
WHICH THINGS INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE?
-
The lyrics come from the world of dreams,
nightmares, fantasy and imagination. They can also be inspired by things
that can happen in every day living, but one way or another, they are covered
with a lot of symbolism and aligoria.
7.WHICH ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
WHICH WILL YOUR NEXT STEP BE?
-
The big plan is a new, full length
cd with new songs and some live performances. We missed too much the feeling
of playing live. Our very next step is gonna be a promo demo with 4 or
5 songs, just to show we are here, alive.
8.WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WEREN'T
ABLE TO COMPOSE MUSIC?
-
We can't imagine ourselves out of music.
It would be like we were paralized or without hands and feet. I don't even
want to think about it.
9.WHY DO YOU THINK GREEK BANDS GO ABROAD
TO RECORD THEIR ALBUMS? DOESN'T GREECE HAVE GOOD STUDIOS? WHAT'S THE MATTER?
-
For better productions of course. There,
they take their job more seriously. This doesn't mean that Greece doesn't
have good studios, but for this kind of music, the good studios are few
and the good sound engineeres, fewer.
10.YOU WAKE UP ONE DAY AND SUDDENLY
YOU REALIZE THAT YOU CAN'T PLAY OR COMPOSE MUSIC ANY MORE. WHAT WILL YOU
DO?
-
I told you before that I don't even
think about it. I believe I would be like a deaf or blind and for sure
I would become catatonic, fallen into melancholy.
11.IF YOUR MUSIC WAS AN EMOTION WHAT
WOULD IT BE? IF IT WAS A PAINTING WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
-
Nice question. I never thought about
it. The first thing that comes to my mind is crying and sadness with some
kind of esoteric anger and pain, like someone who's lonely and he can't
share his loneliness. If it would be a painting, I guess it could be Dali's
"Sleep".
12.IF YOU SUFFERED FROM A SEVERE AMNESIA,
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'D MISS THE MOST?
-
Well, if I was suffering from that
kind of amnesia, I don't think I would miss something. How am I supposed
to miss something I don't know. Anyway, I get your point, but I can't seperate
some parts of my life, so I guess I would miss them all.
13.IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH
HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY?
-
Well, I would like to visit the primitive
ages, when man was fresh upon the earth. I know it would be very dangerous,
but I'm dying to know. I also would be very interested in ancient Greek
times, cause I wanna know if things were like tehy say to us now in books.
14.WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE VANISHED
FROM THE WORLD?
-
Wars, misery, hate and lies, I think
they would be enough, for our world to be a better place, if they were
vanished from the face of the earth.
15.WHICH BOOK, YOU LIKE A LOT, WOULD
YOU LIKE TO BE MADE A MOVIE? WOULD YOU LIKE TO COMPOSE THE SOUNDTRACK OR
PLAY IN THE MOVIE?
-
"The Fall Of The House Of User" of
Edgar Allan Poe. It's already a movie, but a very old one with Vincent
Price and so I'd like to see it been made with new technology, even though
I believe that no one could replace Vincent's acting and his magnificent
voice in our times. And of course the soundtrack would be mine. the song
"Nevermore" is inspired from this story.
16.THANK YOU! LEAVE YOUR MESSAGE...
-
I thank you for your interest and everything.
I also would like to thank people like you, who believe in us, giving us
strength to carry on.
-
I'm gonna finish with some lines
taken from a new Denial Price song named "Argus":
"Through withering mornings
Through suffering nights, I'll be waiting
Through lying arcanas
Through desperate eyes, I'll be waiting
Yeah, I'm waiting..."
THANX A LOT!
