ELFONIA
Elfonía
is an experimental music project influenced by doom, gothic, atmospheric
and progressive rock. Formed by Marcela Bovio (vocals, violins) and Alejandro
Millán (keyboards, sequences).
1. TELL US IN A FEW WORDS THE MOST
IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY. WHICH IS TODAY'S LINE UP?
We have been involved in this project
for about a year, so there haven’t been that many big events. But we do
sense we’re going thru an important moment right now, refining the band’s
sound and getting ready to record our first album.
2. WHAT DOES ELFONVA MEAN? HOW DID
YOU SELECT THIS MONICKER? DOES IT HAVE A SPECIAL MEANING TO YOU?
It’s a word we put together combining
the words "elfo" (elf) and "fonía" (sound), so it basically means
"sound of the elves". We just came up with it and liked the way it sounds
(it’s pronounced elf-o-nee-ah), plus we enjoy Tolkien’s work a lot.
3. GIVE US A DESCRIPTION OF YOUR MUSIC.
WHICH ARE THE BAND'S INFLUENCES?
We consider our music to be highly
experimental; our influences come mainly from gothic, doom, progressive
and atmospheric but we don’t set any boundaries when it comes to writing
music.
4. SOON YOU WILL RELEASE YOUR FIRST
FULL LENGTH ALBUM. COULD YOU TELL US SOME THINGS ABOUT IT?
The album will contain about 10
tracks, and we plan to release 2 different editions: one very low priced
edition will consist of the CD in a printed envelope; the other one will
be a special edition in an unusual package (we’re still deciding between
a few ideas), that will include the CD and a large booklet with special
photos.
5. WHAT ARE YOUR LYRICS TALKING ABOUT?
IS IT REAL LIFE OR FANTASY STORIES YOU'RE DEALING WITH?
A little bit of both, I guess.
The lyrics deal with real life situations but from a fantastic and dreamy
point of view.
6. BEFORE FORMING ELFONVA YOU USED
TO BE IN ANOTHER BAND CALLED HYDRA. WHY DID YOU SPLIT UP? CAN YOU GIVE
US SOME INFO FOR THIS BAND? WHAT WERE YOU PLAYING THERE?
Well, we had been together for
about 4 years, and we came to a point where our musical tastes differed
a lot. Hydra was a progressive-doom metal band, and it was slowly changing
towards progressive metal. So we decided to call it quits one day and do
what really fulfilled us.
7. HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE
YOUR WORK? WILL YOU SEND THE PROMO TO LABELS?
We’re currently working with a
producer/distributor company called Metalipsis (www.metalipsis.com),
they’re helping us promote our music and have plans to distribute the album
in different countries. But we will also send promos to radio stations,
labels, fanzines.
8. WHICH IS THE BIGGEST DREAM YOU WANT
TO ACHIEVE WITH THE BAND?
9. WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE UNDERGROUND
SCENE OF YOUR COUNTRY? CAN YOU POINT OUT SOME INTERESTING NEW BANDS FROM
MEXICO?
We’re actually not very familiar
with the scene; but we do know there’s a lot of variety in the bands styles.
Some bands like Argentum (black metal) and Hocico (industrial) are already
getting a lot of international exposure.
10. WHICH DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST
PART IN YOUR MUSIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY YOU FROM OTHER BANDS AND WHERE DO
YOU THINK YOU NEED FURTHER IMPROVEMENT?
Well, we have set in our minds
the goal to transmit as much emotional content as possible with our music;
we put special dedication to every aspect of a song (lyrics, melody, structure,
ambient), so it truly reflects the feelings and idea we have in our heads.
Of course there’s always room for improvement, I think we still need to
work on defining our live sound.
11. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WEREN'T
ABLE TO COMPOSE MUSIC?
We’d probably focus on our majors
and get regular jobs, which would be incredibly sad =)
12. IF SOMEDAY YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO
MEET THE CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHICH WOULD YOUR BIGGEST QUESTION
BE?
I think that being in the presence
of the creator of the universe would imply being dead, and I believe in
that moment there’ll be no questions left to ask.
13. IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH
HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT WOULD YOU MISS
THE MOST FROM OUR TIME?
It would be nice to go ahead and
check out what the future will be like, to see if mankind can eventually
be prosperous and peaceful.
