ENTHRAL
I think the band's name
says it all, cause their music - their own interpretation of how death-black
metal should sound, is and can be enthralling to most of the extreme metal
lovers. Martin rafoss, the band's bassist is here to explain some things
to us and offer plenty of information regarding the band, their music,
the past and future...
1.FIRST OF ALL POINT OUT THE MOST
IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY AND INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO THE
READERS.
-
Enthral was formed in 1995 by Gunnhild
Bratset and Kjetil Hektoen, and has since then released three full-length
albums; “Prophecies of the Dying” in 1997 and “The Mirrors Opposite End”
in 1998, both on the label Hot Records, and now “Subterranean Movement”
in 2003 on Displeased Records. We have also recorded unreleased demo material
and featured on the Hot Records Compilation in 1996 and on a King Diamond
Tribute released on Necropolis Records in 2001. The whole band biography,
discography, and more are found on our Homepage at www.enthral.org
-
Enthral now consists of four members;
Kjetil Hektoen on drums and vocals, Martin Rafoss on Bass, Gunnhild Bratset
and Ronny Hansen on guitars. Stian Aarstad (ex-Dimmu Borgir), keyboard
on the second and third album, and no longer a steady member of the band,
also did the engineering (thanx mate).
2.WHY DID YOU NAME YOUR LATEST RELEASE
"SUNTERRANEAN MOVEMENT"? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SUGGEST WITH IT? DOES IT HAVE
TO DO IN A WAY WITH THE UNDERGROUND METAL MOVEMENT? WHAT DOES THE COVER
ARTWORK REPRESENT AND WHICH IS ITS CONNECTION WITH THE LYRICS?
-
(First of all, the album is called
SUBterranean movement, thank you very much he he…). When the “Subterranean
Movement” title was first mentioned, we all knew it was perfect. It gathered
all elements from the past few years, this primarily meaning long hours
and hard work in our old, dark rehearsal room, developing our sound and
new direction. And when we finally were able to show the world outside
that we still existed down there by delivering a new album, stronger and
darker than before, it was the Subterranean Movement come true.
-
We would without any doubt, state that
this new album belongs in the underground, if that`s what you mean. But
it has no connection to any part of a movement or environment what so ever-
except our own maybe.
-
The cover artwork task was given to
our biggest fan and good friend Balfori of Lunaris. It was decided to give
him total freedom, and the outcome turned out to be what we also had wanted:
An “outsider`s” view upon our music and lyrics and his personal interpretation,
and we simply loved it. It was a lot of fun seeing such a crazy mind at
work.
3.GIVE US SOME GENERAL INFO FOR "SUBTERRANEAN
MOVEMENT". WHERE WAS IT RELEASED, HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU, WHO WAS THE
PRODUCER? AND GENERALLY TELL US ANYTHING YOU THINK THAT MIGHT INTEREST
US.
-
The album was released on the Dutch
label Displeased Records on 28th of July. The recording process started
in the beginning of February 2003 at MLP Studio on Gjovik, where
we also did the mixing. I believe we worked on and off till May.
Engineers were Nils Harald M?hlum, Ove Husemoen and Stian Aarstad. The
whole band took part in the producing bit, and the mastering was performed
by Tom Kvalsvoll at Strype Audio in Oslo in late June.
4.WHICH ACCORDING TO YOU ARE THE MAIN
DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN "SUBTERRANEAN MOVEMENT" AND "THE MIRROR'S
OPPOSITE END". THERE IS A SLIGHT CHANGE IN YOUR MUSICAL DIRECTION. WHY
DID THIS HAPPEN? IS IT BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOW A STABLE LINE-UP AND YOU KNOW
EACH OTHER BETTER, SO YOU CAN WORK TOGETHER IN A MUCH BETTER AND PRODUCTIVE
WAY?
-
Why our music has changed so dramatically,
I truly cannot say. It kind of happened that way. After “The Mirror`s”,
we tried to do something different, and slowly went away from the straight
foreward symphonic black metal to more death metal, still using the base
elements of black metal. We may also have picked up what we found most
interesting from the old-school metal stuff on the way. In the end it turned
out to be more technical and far more aggressive than ever before. It must
be said that we have never been afraid of experiencing with new material.
And after some time we had recorded the “Demo 2000”, a major breakthrough
for us, realizing that we had finally come up with a new and interesting
direction.
-
It is no question that a steady line-up
has helped us both creatively and also in the productive way. The appearance
of Ronny Hansen on guitar have pushed Enthral`s creative work process further
into a chaotic void.
5.WHERE ARE YOUR LYRICS REFERRING TO?
TELL US SOME GENERAL THINGS ABOUT THEM. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE LYRICS?
-
The lyrics on “Subterranean movement”
is not only about anti-religion etc, but also very critical towards everything
that lies within human nature. Especially on the subject regarding that
we, knowingly or unknowingly, restrict ourselves because we have a great
need to fit in everywhere and anytime. Of course there are limits to how
tolerant one should be, but if there is any moral out there, people should
be able to understand what we mean by this. Another point is about the
so-called misanthropic life-style, which haunts the black metal scene.
Most of them do not believe in what they are saying. They adapt their statements
according to what they feel the environment would accept to fit in.
-
You will also find a lot of irony in
the lyrics, read “Slaves of one Tongue”. It tells about one special movement
or “society” here in Norway, but should fit other environments also.
Other lyrics have a very personal view, like “Inject Hate”, where other
topics of interest to us are described. Also personal directed and “intern
messages” appear within the lyrics, but people can try to figure that out
for themselves if they want to.
6.WHAT KIND OF PROCEDURE DO YOU FOLLOW
WHILST COMPOSING SONGS? DO YOU TRY TO FOCUS ON AN EVENT, A SITUATION OR
A FEELING IN ORDER TO KEEP A SPECIFIC FEELING? AFTER ALL DON'T WE SAY THAT
AN ARTIST CAN BETTER EXPRESS HIMSELF THROUGH BITTER AND HARD TIMES?
-
We have actually never followed any
procedures, ever. Not for the want of trying, but we have realized that
planning and procedures does not actually work for us. Our work process
is based upon rehearsal, where new ideas and riffs are sliced and diced
and finally put together. All decisions are made democratically within
the band. This way of composing, we believe, is one of the main reasons
why our music contains such variety and strange ideas because of the individuality
in the creative process. It does take a lot of time, true, but the result
is always a surprise, even to our selves.
-
A band has also its ups and downs like
in all relationships, and its therefore important keep on to the focus
and energy. You ask about a specific feeling, and yes, the feeling is also
important. But when working in a band with different views and ideas, I
believe focus is even more important to able to create the right feeling.
7.DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE APPEARANCES
OR TOURING?
-
Yes, hopefully we will be able to do
some live shows as soon as possible. We have engaged the talented vocalist
“Mannevond” from Koldbrann to do the live voice. He is touring with his
band this summer, but we will start rehearsing with him in August. Primarily
we will do shows here in Norway, although locations are still unknown.
Hopefully we will also play a few gigs in Europe this autumn.
8.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE THAT
IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOUR MUSIC TO ATTRACT HIS ATTENTION? WHICH IS THE
MOST RECOGNIZABLE ELEMENT IN YOUR MUSIC?
-
We would encourage this unknown person
to check out a band very different from most other extreme metal bands,
deeply committed and hardworking, struggling for the right for a Throne
in Hell.
9.IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT
WOULD IT BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
-
I will not speculate in emotional matters
when talking about our music, since everyone reacts differently and would
therefore disagree.
10.HOW DID THIS COOPERATION OCCUR WITH
DISPLEASED RECORDS? WHY DID YOU LEAVE HOT RECORDS? ARE YOU SATISFIED BY
THE PROMOTION DIPLEASED DO FOR YOU? WITH WHAT CRITERIA DO YOU SELECT THE
LABEL YOU WILL SIGN TO?
-
We had a two-album deal with Hot Records,
thus the contract ended in 1998 after “The Mirrors Opposite End”. The deal
with Displeased Records was made due to the release of a demo in 2000.
We are pleased to be signed on a label that has a genuine interest in the
genre and who are willing to take some risks. We are not entirely satisfied,
but will not discuss this in an interview, for obvious reasons.
11.IF YOU COULD PICK OUT ONE SONG ONLY
FROM YOUR RELEASE, WHICH WOULD THAT BE AND IF YOU HAD THE MONEY TO MAKE
AN EXPENSIVE VIDEO CLIP, HOW DO YOU IMAGINE IT TO BE?
-
I could imagine that I would pick “Inject
Hate”, primarily because this one is the least straight-forward of them
all, and create a setting within a blood-soaked Hospital environment very
everyone has gone insane. Anyone seen the great Danish movie “The Kingdom”?
If so, you should be able to understand why I would find this idea kind
of intriguing.
12.DO YOU THINK THAT GOD GOT SO FRIGHTENED
FROM WHAT HE CREATED THAT HE MOVED TO HEAVEN TO KEEP DISTANCE FROM HIS
CREATURES?
Christ, what a question. Yes? Anyway,
keep him there.
13.IF YOU WERE A FLY, WHERE WOULD YOU
LIKE TO BE AND WHY?
-
I`d like to be caught in a deserted
spiders web because I fancy a slow death
14.IF WE LIVED IN A WORLD WITHOUT ANY
MUSIC, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? HOW WOULD YOU PIPE ALL YOUR FEELINGS AND NEGATIVE
ENERGY?
I cannot simply imagine what I
would do without music.
15.IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO TRAVEL
BACK IN TIME, WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHAT
WOULD YOU MISS THE MOST FROM OUR TIMES?
-
I can only answer for my self: I would
very much like to travel back to the Netherlands on the 27th of January
1991 and see the Bolt Thrower and Nocturnus live… If I was to see that,
I would not miss anything from our times.
16.THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO ASK
YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Only thanx a lot for your interest
in Enthral! If anyone should have any questions, comments or like to book
us somewhere in Greece, please contact us on- [email protected]
