FRAIL ENTITY
HAVE RELEASED THEIR FIRST DEMO AND THOUGH THEY HAVE SOME THINGS TO CORRECT
IN THEIR MUSIC, I THINK THAT THEIR RELEASE IS VERY PROMISSING CAUSE IT
SHOWA A BAND THAT REALLY WANTS TO WORK AND TRIES TO CREATE IT'S PERSONAL
SOUND. FRAIL ENTITY IS AN OASIS OF ORIGINALITY IN THE HEAVY METAL GENRE
AND IAM REALLY HAPPY THAT THEY ARE FROM GREECE
1. FIRST OF ALL GIVE US A FEW INFORMATION
ABOUT THE BAND'S HISTORY AND NAME THE CURRENT LINE UP.
-
Hi Nikos, the band started in 2000
playing covers by the name “aposynthesis” and with a different line-up.
In 2001 we started composing our own songs and after a series of live shows
and member changes, we changed our name into “Frail Entity” under which
we recorded our first demo-CD in October 2002.The current line-up is Dimitris
Kanellopoulos – Bass Guitars, Vocals , Sophia Sarri – Vocals , Giannis
Konstantas – Drums , Nektarios Pogas – Guitars, Programming and Alexis
Chatziioannou – Guitars, Programming. We don’t have much of a history you
see…
2. YOU HAVE RELEASED RECENTLY YOUR
FIRST DEMO "ANATOLIA/ALL ALONE". WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS
RELEASE? IS IT YOUR PRIORITY TO FIND A CONTRACT OR TO GAIN MORE EXPERIENCE?
-
What we did was simply record two of
our songs so as to have them on CD. We sure are looking forward for a contract
but it’s not the only target. We actually intend to promote our demo the
best we can.
3. YOUR DEMO CONTAINS 2 SONGS "ANATOLIA"
AND "ALL ALONE". CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THESE SONGS ARE LYRICALLY DEALING
WITH?
-
“Anatolia” refers to the oppression
laid upon people by any religion. It also states the hope that unaffected
by brain-washing process people actually don’t care about religious matters.
The reason we named the song this way, has to do with its musical part
mostly and our intention was not to refer only to Islam. Generally, lyrics
can be seen in many different ways, for example someone who reads between
the lines might actually generalize the “religious leaders-religionists”
relation to any “leader-follower” one. “All-alone” has some personal lyrics
of our singer and bassist Dimitris which everyone perceives them in a different
way, even inside the band.
4. I FOUND A LOT OF VARIETY IN
YOUR MUSIC AND IT'S REALLY DIFFICULT FOR ME TO LABEL IT. SO, HOW WOULD
YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? DO YOU AGREE WITH THE USE OF
"LABELS" IN MUSIC?
-
Truth is it’s rather difficult for
us to label it too. It is just our music. We understand the use of labels
in music for commercial purpose mainly but we disagree with the artistic
part of the labels. We can’t even say that we play “metal” simply, it’s
way too restrictive.
5. NAME SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES AND
SOME OF YOUR MOST BELOVED ALBUMS.
-
Nektarios: Dream Theater-“Scenes…”,
Tool-“La te ra lus”, Radiohead-“Kid A”, Portishead-“Dummy”, Arcturus-“La
Masquerade Infernale”, Psychotic Waltz-“Bleeding”, Anathema, Paradise Lost,
Stereo Nova, Monster Magnet and more......
-
Dimitris: I love various things from
Greek traditional music to fusion jazz and blues. So, it’s difficult for
me to name some of them.
6. IN YOUR BIO YOU SAY THAT YOU USE
NON METAL ELEMENTS AS WELL IN YOUR MUSIC. WHICH ARE THOSE? LATELY, I HAVE
SEEN QUITE MANY BANDS UNDERLINING THE FACT THAT THEY ADD NON METAL ELEMENTS
AND IT SEEMS TO ME LIKE THEY ARE IN A WAY EMBARRASSED FOR THE MUSIC THEY
PLAY. I'D LIKE TO HAVE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT.
-
First of all we’d like to make clear
that we are not embarrassed about the music we play and we wouldn’t hide
that we play metal under any fancy terms. Now about our non metal elements,
they exist and they are used to give our music a different touch. We actually
have written some other songs some of which are metal songs, some aren’t
typically metal ones. After all, we’re five entities with completely different
influences and this lead to the use of such elements.
7. YOUR FIST BAND NAME WAS "APOSYNTHESIS"
AND YOU WERE A COVER BAND. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS NAME AND WHICH SONGS
AND BANDS DID YOU COVER?
-
This is a nice story … “Aposynthesis”
is in fact a wordplay with the Greek term “synthesis” (composition). After
listening to a really bad Greek song we thought that it was not a “synthesis”
but “aposynthesis” (disintegration). So we thought it would be a nice name
for a band. We’ve covered several songs like “Fade To black”-“Seek n’ Destroy”-“Call
Of Ktulu” Metallica , “Solitude” Candlemass , “Last Time” Paradise Lost,
Gathering-Anathema-Sepultura-Engine (The Greek band).
8."ALL ALONE" IS THE SONG I PREFER
THE MOST AND I REALLY LIKED THE COMBINATION OF MALE AND FEMALE VOCALS.
IS IT POSSIBLE IN THE FUTURE SOPHIA'S VOCALS
TO PLAY A BIGGER PART IN YOUR MUSIC?
-
Thank you for your nice words. The
truth is that we don’t plan anything. The next songs might vary from plain
female vocals to brutal or clean male ones and any combination between
them. We really can’t tell.
9. TELL ME A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE PHOTO
THAT YOU HAVE IN THE COVER, WHICH SHOWS MUSLIMS TO PRAY. I THINK THAT RELIGION
MUST BE ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECTS. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT RELIGION NEEDS
THE FANATICS IN ORDER TO
SURVIVE?
-
The photo is very well combined to
the lyrics since it shows a kid inside several Muslims praying, but there
is a kid that doesn’t even bother. We think it’s well connected with the
lyrics of “Anatolia” that we’ve mentioned before. We all agree that religion
does need the fanatics to survive, but what matters most is that leadership
(in all of its forms) needs religion to survive and gain power.
10. THE PRODUCTION OF THIS DEMO IS
VERY SATISFACTORY. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU AND WHERE HAVE THE RECORDINGS
TAKEN PLACE? DON'T YOU THINK THAT LATELY GREEK METAL BANDS BECOME MORE
PROFESSIONAL IN A WAY?
-
We had a series of unlucky facts taking
place during the recording period, so it took us three days in August and
another six days in October to finish the demo. It was recorded in Baseline
Studios,Athens and Spyros Aspiotis is responsible for the production. What
you mention about Greek metal bands is true since they generally pay a
lot of attention to the production of what they record, to the covers,
to their promotion, everything. The whole situation is surely better than
some years ago and we’re happy to see this.
11. THERE IS A BLOODY AND CATASTROPHIC
WAR GOING ON IN IRAQ. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT? SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH
US.
-
We think that these wars shouldn’t
surprise us anymore. It is certain that capitalism needs these wars once
in a while so as to survive and expand. The characteristic of this war
is that it takes place without the approval of the United Nations (which
doesn’t make any difference to me - kids die in a war even if the United
Nations agree) but this seems to arouse lots of people, fact that is encouraging.
What we say is not just “Stop the war” but transform it, meaning that we
(people) need to fight the leadership of the planet as well as our country
which contributes to the “allied” forces by giving its territory to the
American army. You asked before about religion. Here we have a great example
of how religion supports and is used as a veil to cover war actions. Amazing
is also the fact that this war is the first one to be based on proleptic
reasons!
12. YOU HAVE DONE A LIVE SHOW SUPPORTING
ROTTING CHRIST. TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE OF YOURS. WAS
IT THE FIRST TIME YOU PERFORMED LIVE?
-
This wasn’t our first live performance;
we’ve appeared many times in various places. Our last one was at March
9, at Paranoid Hellenic Fest (Gagarin 205, Athens). The next one is at
March 29, at PAL Club, Ioannina. Playing alongside ROTTING CHRIST was one
of our greatest experiences because we shared the same stage with a band
of which we are fans for a lot of years. They were very friendly with us
and generally treated us fine. We think that Sakis is one of the people
who have supported the Greek scene the most. He could be a very good example
for many people who are in the whole metal thing.
13. IF YOUR MUSIC WAS AN EMOTION, WHAT
WOULD IT BE? IF IT WAS A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
-
We don’t think it could be one emotion
solely. It would be more relevant to the emotional state of a cyclothyme.
As for a painting it sure would be Salvatore Dali’s “The Seven Arts” that
shows an “alternative” view of a strange duet performing.
14. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME
WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY?
-
Probably the beginning of the last
century so as to live the Russian revolution and understand why a so promising
situation ended up such a mesh. As for Dimitris would probably be happy
if he was born in the fifties so as to be a teenager during the sixties
and a mature teenager during the eighties.
15. YOU ARE GRANTED ONE WISH. WHAT
WOULD YOU DO?
-
Nektarios: Vanish capitalism.
-
Dimitris: I wish all people start to
think more, become conscious and skepticistic. After all the change and
fracture of the system in our rotten world starts from every single unit.
16. IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET THE
CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK HIM?
-
What size shoes he wears.
17. WHAT TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS
INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
-
45 or whatever answer I would get from
the creature.
18. THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO
ASK YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Thank you very much Niko. Your questions
are very interesting, since they are not the classical ones with the “easy”
answer. Thank you very much for the support and your nice words. Cheers!
Nektarios-Dimitris.
