find a more suitable prlogue for the folowwing itnerview. Hand Of Doom
is a new rising force of the Italian metal scene.
1.TELL US IN A FEW WORDS THE MOST IMPORTANT
MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY. WHICH IS TODAY'S LINE UP?
Well, there have been many meaningful
moments in the history of the band. Surely the realization of the first
demotape in 1997. A moment to which we are particularly tied up is the
realization of the cd "behind the shadows" (more than 500 copies sold in
8 months) that it has allowed us to find a record contract. We have recently
suffered a change of formation (later 7 years!) and to the moment the line
up is so composed:
Zoppi Roberto - Guitars & Vocals
Bera Matteo - Guitars
Marazzi Luca - Bass
Grazzani Claudio - Keyboards
We are in these days making the
auditions for the new drummer.
2.WHEN I FIRST HEARD YOUR NAME I THOUGHT
THAT YOU WERE PLAYING DOOM METAL. SO, HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK IS THE
CORRECT CHOICE OF A BAND NAME?
The name is surely important, but
it is the music that always has to speak. It is therefore always necessary
to push a little bit more always in there. However the name is drawn by
the song "Trapped under ice", Metallica. All anything else other than Doom!!!
3.WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S DIFFICULT TO
FIND MUSICIANS SHARING THE SAME DREAM WITH YOU AND HAVING THE SAME AIMS?
WHERE ARE YOU AIMING AT AS A BAND?
It's always difficult to find people
that lives really for the music. Music is left often for last and it is
put after the job, the girlfridend, etc. Or after a first enthusiasm all
fades away. Personally I study music from 14 years, frequents a conservatory
and I'm graduating in musicology. Also the other guys of the band are hocked
in similar studies. I often like to quote a sentence of Steve Morse "If
you take yourself care of the music, the music will take care of you".
4.WHICH ARE THE BAND’S INFLUENCES?
NAME SOME OF YOUR MOST BELOVED ALBUMS.
Each has his own influences. I
come from the scene thrash and I love to the folly the technical death
as Cynic, Atheist, Death, etc. Surely I could not do to less of album as"...And
Justice for all", "Rust in peace", "is of euphoria", "Individual Thought
patterns", etc. Besides study and listening as classical music (Schoenberg,
Mahler, Wagner, Beethoven, etc.). Claudio is more tied to' 70 and the power
metal, Matteo loves the technical death and the violent thrash, Luca
listens to death, gothic, jazz, Funk, fusion. All these influences build
the Hand of Doom sound.
5.HOW MANY DEMOS/ALBUMS DO YOU HAVE
AS A BAND? COMPARE THEM. ARE YOU IN THE POSITION TO SAY THAT YOU HAVE EVOLVED
AS SONGWRITERS?
As already motto we have realized
in 1997 the first demotape "The nameless city", then in 1998 a demo live
of 5 traces "Waiting in live" and subsequently in 2000 the cd "Behind the
shadows." In 2002 has gone out "Dreams of resurrection" for the label
Gemini Records. We are evolved a lot surely there, departing from a thrash/death
really powerful, we have reached then the melodic death of "Behind..."
and to the prog. death of "Dreams...". The last songs contain numerous
fusion parts and classical scores, without never skipping the power and
the speed.
6.WHICH THINGS DO YOU LIKE TO “HURT”
THROUGH YOUR LYRICS? DO YOU WRITE FANTASY OR REAL LIFE STORIES?
All the texts usually speak of
feelings or of experiences lived in first person. In some cases there are
texts with a double reading: they almost seem legends, that however is
discovered applicable to the life of each. For us they are important and
we always invite to attentively read them.
7.YOU HAVE RECORDED BACK IN 1998 A
5 TRACK LIVE DEMO. WHY DID YOU DO THAT? WHY A LIVE DEMO AND NOT SOME NEW
SONGS?
Only a live demo. It has been recorded
for making to know to the people our evolutionary trial from the thrash/death
to a melodi & prog death. And then has been very amusing to realize
it, with the old songs in a new dress totally.
8.YOU PARTICIPATED IN A COMPILATION
CD FROM WHIPLASH RECORDS, "INTO THE UNDERGROUND VOL.III”. HOW WAS IT ARRANGED?
DID IT HELP YOU IN ANY WAY?
Very simply the Whiplash has required
a song to us to insert in the compilation. We have taken back the dat and
we have rimixated a song (" Hypocrisy ") and we have delivered to her to
the label. Nothing else.
9.WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WEREN’T
ABLE TO COMPOSE MUSIC?
I would kill myself ! Jokes apart
I would confine to the execution, a little bit as it happens in the orchestras
of classical music.
10.WHICH DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST AND
WHICH IS THE WORST PART IN YOUR MUSIC? WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU NEED FURTHER
DEVELOPMENT?
Surely our music is very rich of
tones and things can be found is dreamed how powerful that techniques,
etc. it is music played however by people that they study and they try
to improve every day. A defect is perhaps that in some cases it is really
very complicated and therefore it requires more listening. We hope to always
improve us without never giving up the job on the instrumental technique
that we think fundamental to make good music.
11.HOW WAS YOUR COOPERATION ARRANGED
WITH GEMINI RECORDS? ARE YOU STILL SATISFIED WITH THEM?
Sincerely to the beginning it moved
really well, but lately they don't offer great services. It's a little
bit delicate a discourse, but sincerely in the last year they aren’t given
a lot to do.
12. WHICH SONG OF YOURS DO YOU THINK
IS THE MOST IDEAL TO REPRESENT YOUR WORK?
Surely “Tears of eternity” from
“Dreams of resurrection” album.
13. MANY EXTREME METAL BANDS EXPRESS
RACISTIC IDEOLOGIES. WHICH ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
Oh, no. For us music is feeling
peer. In our songs you will never find politics, religion or similar things.
Only reflections on internal worlds.
14. IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH
HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT WOULD YOU MISS
THE MOST FROM OUR TIME?
Beautiful question! Personally
I would like to have been born 15 years to be able to live the thrash period
of the '80 before. Or to horse of the first years of 900 to see to
be born the dodecafonia and the whole art of the new harmony. Today it
is everything too much superficial, everything with conformity where it
wins the quantity on the quality.
