KADATH
-
WHY YOU
MUST BUY THE NEW KADATH CD? EASY ANSWER, CAUSE THEY PLAY HIGH QUALITY DEATH
METAL MUSIC AND A CONCEPT STORY THAT MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT THE DARK SIDE
OF HUMANS.
1.TELL US IN A FEW WORDS THE MOST IMPORTANT
MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY. WHICH IS TODAY'S LINE UP?
-
Marc: the most important moments in
my eyes are:
-
- the recording of our 1st demo “Face
your Death”
-
- the 1st gig with ZSK-5
-
- the 1st partcipation on Fuck the
Commerce-festival
-
- the recording of our 1st album “Cruel”
-
- the recording of our 2nd album “Chasing
the Devil”
-
The line-up reads as: Erling (drums),
Gesuz (guitar), Mockel (guitar), Holger (vocals) and Marc (bass).
2.WHY HAVE YOU CHANGED THE BAND NAME
FROM CATALEPSY TO KADATH? WHAT DOES THIS NAME EXPRESS AND MEAN TO YOU?
DO YOU THINK THAT A BAND NAME CAN HELP OR DESTROY A BAND'S FUTURE?
-
Marc: the change of the band name was
due to the fact that other bands named CATALEPSY already exist at that
time. And back then, the band restarts after ¾ year of pause, so
it was appropriate to look for a new moniker. For us the name has no special
meaning, only that it was short and seemed to fit to us. The origin of
the name KADATH is a mystical one (H.P. Lovecraft’s novel “The DreamQuest
of the eternal Kadath) and that makes the band interesting and people curious
about what we’re doing and dealing with. If a band name can influence the
future, I don’t think so, but maybe people can associate good or bad things
related with that name. And in our case, I believe that these associations
are more negative than positive!
3.YOU PLAY BRUTAL DEATH METAL. WHY
HAVE YOU CHOSEN THIS GENRE? COULD YOU INSTEAD OF DEATH PLAY SOMETHING ELSE?
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN OTHER METAL BRANCHES?
-
Marc: Death Metal was always the link
between all band members, and that’s what everyone of us wanted to do.
End of the 80’s, when Death Metal was born with bands such as Cannibal
Corpse, Obituary, Entombed, it was a revelation and that was the way we
wanted to follow. Brutal extreme music is a part of our lifes, if not to
say our personality. Speaking for myself, I am a big Doom Metal-fan, and
if time was there, I would like to do this music in the vein of finish
THERGOTHON. They are the masters of Doom! Other styles I like is Grindcore
and Crustcore. But the biggest part of my musical taste is reserved to
Death Metal.
4.WHICH BANDS ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
WHICH BAND AND SONG IN SPECIFIC MADE YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO?
-
Marc: nowadays, I don’t think we have
any influences yet, because we are doing the music our own way, without
trying to copy other bands or jumping on any waggon only because it’s the
sound of the day. In the beginning however, we were mostly influences by
bands like Cannibal Corpse, Kataklysm and some others. Back then we were
searching for the right sound and Kataklysm was a kind of reflection for
our own ideas.
5.TELL US SOME GENERAL THINGS ABOUT
THE BAND RELEASES.COMPARE THEM. ARE YOU STILL SATISFIED WITH THEM
OR IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO CHANGE?
-
The demos and the first mini-CD are,
in todays view, pretty unmature and there was a continious search for the
right sound that we were not able to find. But the last two CD’s, namely
“Cruel” and “Chasing the Devil” are really representing what we want to
do. In the time of “Cruel”, 1998-1999, Mockel was the one who gives his
handwriting to the songs with the Kataklysm-flair, and we were and still
are really proud with the result. Today, 2001-2002, the “Chasing the Devil”
– Cd has grown up in the sign of Gesuz, that means a more American-like
approach of the music. The new recording is more brutish and lower tuned
compared to the “Cruel” – CD. I’m totally satisfied with both the last
outputs and would not like to change anything on them.
6.WHAT ABOUT YOUR LATEST WORK "CHASING
THE DEVIL"? HOW DID THE FANS AND PRESS ACCEPT IT?
-
Marc: the new CD got good to excellent
responses so far and we are curious to see if the Death maniacs will accept
the change of our sound. Talking about the press, especially the big press,
I would say that most of them are quite stupid. Some of them begin their
review with “Again a concept about a serial killer” and comparison with
Macabre’s “Dahmer”. First I don’t know a lot of bands having constructed
a real and whole serial killer concept on one album. And second our approach
to the theme and music is totally different to Macabre!! But when Cannibal
Corpse is talking about gore and murder for more than 10 years by now,
nobody complains! Big press sucks, because they think they can say what’s
good and what’s not. It’s bullshit because only the fans are important,
and if they like it, I’m happy.
7.YOUR LYRICS ARE AMAZING! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
THEY DEAL WITH A PSYCHOPATH SERIAL KILLER. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT MADE YOU
SO INTERESTED IN HIM THAT YOU DECIDED TO WRITE ABOUT HIM? IS THERE A HIDDEN
POINT BEHIND YOUR LYRICS? SOMETHING YOU WANT TO SAY TO THE PEOPLE?
-
Marc: thanks for the compliment. Well,
it took me a lot of reading, searching and working to get the lyrics as
they are. I’m interested in serial killers for a lot of years by now. My
decision to take Chikatilo for the concept were:
-
- his amazing killing spree
-
- the fact that he is not an American
killer
-
There is no message behind the lyrics,
only an attempt to describe the whole aspect of what makes a serial killer
what he is and what he did. What’s so perversely interesting is the “behind”,
what’s happening in the head of such a person, the biography that brings
him to the point to kill people he does not know, mostly to gain
a sexual pleasure he can not gain on a normal way. For me it’s a reflexion
of our civilization, in an extreme form. When you are looking in our History,
you will always find people like Chikatilo.
8.WHICH WAS THE BEST AND WHICH WAS
THE WORST REVIEW, YOU'VE RECEIVED?
-
Marc: on that question I can not give
you a particular answer. In general, reviews with elementary questions
about the music are quite boring. I like reviews like yours where you have
to answer non traditional questions or where you are asked for your personal
meaning.
9.HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE YOUR
WORK? WHICH SONG OF YOURS DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IDEAL TO REPRESENT YOUR
MUSIC?
-
Marc: the promotion of “Chasing” is
mainly done by our label CUDGEL AGENCY. And they are doing a lot of good
and precious work for us. They are sending a lot of promotional CD’s, doing
and sending flyers, checking for gigs for us. The most representative songs
are “Thirst for Revenge” and “A Monster Revealed”, because they are the
newest and best ones.
10.YOU HAVE DONE SEVERAL LIVE SHOWS
WITH SEVERAL BANDS. WHICH OF THEM DO YOU LIKE THE MOST AND WITH WHICH DID
YOU HAVE THE BEST COOPERATION?
-
Marc: well, we have done about 80 shows
until now. It’s not really much, when you think that we are playing for
9 years now. Some of the best in mind are gigs with ORTH, FLESHLESS, DESECRATION,
MASTIC SCUM, VIBRION, MENTAL ABERRATION (former band of Gesuz), DEAD INFECTION,
KRISIUN, BLOCKHEADS. The best cooperation was certainly with Mental Aberration,
because we were very good friends with them and partied a lot with the
guys. Unfortunately the band doesn’t exist anymore.
11.IF YOU HAD THE MONEY TO MAKE A PROPER,
EXPENSIVE VIDEOCLIP, HOW WOULD YOU IMAGINE IT TO BE?
-
Marc: only to speaking for myself:
I would never do a video clip, because they are useless. Where can you
see Metal videos nowadays? Nowhere. And to say the truth even 10 and more
years ago, when there were Metal programs on TV here, I didn’t care for
Metal videos, because they are not necessary for our music. Mostly unoriginal,
only recordings of live performances, what’s the meaning of that? When
I want to see a band, I’m going to their shows.
12.WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS DID YOU FACE
IN THE BAND THE PAST TWO YEARS? WHY HAVE SO MANY CHANGES IN THE LINE UP
OCCUR?
-
Marc: well the problems were mainly
personal problems concerning almost each of us. Divorce, financial problems,
work, lack of time, lack of motivation, personal deeps that almost let
us stop the band. So two years ago, Mockel had to leave the band to concentrate
on his private life. Now he is back in the band again. Our drummer Erling
will probably stop at the end of the year, because he wants more time for
himself. Myself, I’m living 90 Km from our hometown now, due to a new working
place, and makes rehearsing a bit more complicate.
13.WHICH IS THE BEST PART IN YOUR MUSIC
AND IN THE BAND IN GENERAL AND WHICH THING DO YOU THINK YOU SHOULD CORRECT?
WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU NEED IMPROVEMENT?
-
Marc: the best part in our band was
always the humor and the good live acting. The best part in our music is
that we never tried to sound like another band, but only like KADATH. Sometimes
it’s a bit of a problem, when people try to categorize you. And I know
most people like and need to do that. Where we have to improve, is definitely
a more professional and accurate approach of our live performance.
14.MANY EXTREME METAL BANDS EXPRESS
RACISTIC IDEOLOGIES. WHICH ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
-
Marc: We never will express any kind
of ideology in our music because it doesn’t belong there! In the Black
Metal world, you will find a lot of these racistic expressions, done by
primitive, stupid teenagers. They are poor little assholes who don’t know
about what they are telling. If we could build time machines, I would send
them back to 1944 and see how they are shitting in their pants when they
are in the inferno our grandparents have lived in!
15.HAVE YOU READ ANY INTERESTING BOOKS
LATELY? HAVE YOU WATCHED AN INTERESTING MOVIE?
-
Marc: Oh yes, I’m reading like a fanatic.
Actually I’m reading a true crime book about Hadden Clark, a serial killer
from USA. Before that I read a story of James Pomeroy, a teenage killer
of the 19th century, who was in solitary confinment for about 50 years!
Moviewise I have bought and seen a “cult” horror movie from the 80’s, “The
Beyond” a few days ago. But I was disappointed. Yesterday I ‘ve seen a
funny movie, “Pig Farm”, about a guy who runs a pig farm and let
disappear dead bodies on his farm for the Mafia. In the cinema, I last
saw the new Episode of Star Wars. This one was better than Episode I, but
the new movies will never reach the old ones.
16.NAME YOUR 5 ALL TIME CLASSIC ALBUMS.
-
Marc: my 5 all time classics are:
-
- Dark Angel: Darkness Descends
-
- Bolt Thrower: Realm of Chaos
-
- Slayer: Reign in Blood
-
- Incubus: Serpent Temptation
-
- Carcass: Reek of Putrefaction
17.IF SOMEDAY YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO
MEET THE CREATUR THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHICH WOULD YOUR BIGGEST QUESTION
BE?
-
Marc: why have you created humans?
18.IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH
HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT WOULD YOU MISS
THE MOST FROM OUR TIME?
-
Marc: The time of Julius Caesar in
the Roman Empire, because I’m fascinated by the history of the Romans and
what they have achieved in more than 1000 years. Of course it would be
the music that I mostly would miss.
19.IF YOU WEREN'T ABLE TO COMPOSE MUSIC,
WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO?
-
Marc: when not music, I would like
to write Science-Fiction or horror novels. I’m a totally fan of science-fiction
literature. My faves are Stephen Baxter, Greg Bear, Arthur C. Clarke and
Iain Banks. In the horror literature, it is Graham Masterton and Clive
Barker.
20.WHAT PROLOGUE AND TITLE WOULD YOU
LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
-
Marc: as a title maybe: “Kadath, and
the battle is going on!!”
21.THANK YOU!HAVE I FORGOT TO ASK YOU
ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Marc: I want to thank you for your
help and interest, and of course all the people and friends who believe
in us and support us during all the years. For more information, go and
