His name is Paul, Paul Nelson and he
is licenced to kill with his guitar virtuosity. He is a LIEGE LORD guitarist
(a great 80's metal act). So... read the interview to learn more about
the band!!!
1.FIRST OF ALL GIVE US A SORT BIOGRAPHY
OF THE BAND, BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY NEW METALHEADS THAT THEY DON'T KNOW
MUCH BOUT THE GROUP
-
The band formed in 1982 as a Judas
Priest cover band like so many others at the time. Soon Liege Lord began
writing their own material which was put out as a demo in 1984. That demo
led to the signing with the now famous Black Dragon records in France,
(the label responsible for the signing of such acts as, Candlemass, Jag
Panzer, Heir Apparent, Savage Grace, Manilla Road) that album was entitled
"Freedoms Rise." The same record was released on the Iron Works/Azra label
in the US and is now considered very collectable. In 1987 we signed with
Metal Blade and released "Burn to my Touch" then in 1989 we released "Master
Control" produced by Terry Date (Pantera, White Zombie, Def Tones, Sound
Garden, etc.) The bands line up at the time of our last CD was myself on
guitar, Tony Truglio (guitar), Frank Cortese (drums), Matt Vinci (bass),
and Joe Comeau (vocals). Our original singer for "Freedoms Rise"
and "Burn to My Touch" was Andy Michaud.
2.CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSICAL STYLE
OF EACH ALBUM THAT YOU HAVE RELEASE AND WHICH ARE THE COMMON ELEMENTS AND
WHICH ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM?
-
On both "Freedom's Rise" (Black
Dragon Records) and "Burn to My Touch" (Metal Blade Records) the lyrics
were very medieval. You can find references to knights, battles, honor
and power. It is our lyrical content (I think) that appealed to our European
fans the most in the beginning. At the time when we first came out, no
one was really writing music around those subjects. The "Master Control"
lyrics were more topical and covered the fears of nuclear war which was
on peoples minds at that time. That album's concept asked the question;
"What would happen if machines spun out of control after relied upon for
so long? I guess the production and lyrics of the first 2 records would
be the differance between the recording Master Control was more of a group
effort Joe Comeau (Annihilator) and I finally were able to contribute to
the writing process with songs like Feel the Blade, Broken Wasteland, and
Eye of the Storm plus the production of Terry Date helped as well the other
2 albums helped establish the bands foothold it metal.
3.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL
STYLE?
-
Liege Lords style is now described
a Power Metal when the band first started there was no such term and club
owners would never know how to categorize us. Other bands were labeled
speed, thrash, death etc. but it was rough in the beginning but things
got better as time progressed.I think were credited as be a power metal
band aleast that's what are style of music be came recognized as, after
our name appeared on the cover of Hittparaders first issue of an offshoot
magazine called "Power Metal" The sound came about by mixing early metal
influances and speed, thrash but yet keeping it melodic in nature and the
Lyrics would always tell a story. I liked the tightness of the rythms the
"chug" if you will when played and recorded corectly it could send chills
up your spine
-
4.DO YOU THINK THAT METAL MUSIC SHOULD
HAVE ITS LIMITS OR IT SHOULD BE OPEN TO DIFFERENT SOUNDS AND GENRES AS
WELL?
-
I have no problem with different divisions
of the music as long as all the off shoots still hold true to the
sourse which is Metal.
5.DO YOU LIKE PUTTING LABELS TO THE
MUSIC? DO YOU THINK THAT THIS HELPS THE FANS OR THAT MAKES THEM A LITTLE
NARROW MINDED?
-
Lables are fine as long as a style
is so prominte and longlasting that it warrents one but splitting music
into to many pieces just gets a little out of hand.
6.WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ABOUT THESE
NU-METAL BANDS.DO YOU LIKE THIS KIND OF SOUND?
-
Yes as with all music there is the
good and the bad and the final recording always speeks for itself one must
be accepting of all music or you've had it.
7.IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY TO RELEASE
A NEW ALBUM UNDER THE NAME OF LIEGE LORD? HAVE YOU GOT ANY NEW SONGS READY?
A POSSIBLE TITLE? TRACK LISTING?
-
Nothing as of yet we're just enjoying
the fact that we reunited for some concerts especially the one at Wacken
2000 in Germany. Joe and I have collaborated on songs for separate Century
Media tributes "Too scared to Run" Uriah Heep and "Dungeons are calling"
Savatage due out in the coming months. It was a blast working with him
in the studio again the tracks came out quite well. I just release a solo
CD entitled "LOOK" and I'm also on the newly released Jason Becker Tribute
"Warmth in the Wilderness" out worldwide on Lion Records www.lionmusic.com
so I'm very busy at the moment.
8.WHICH ARE YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES?
-
Liege Lords influances are bands like
UFO, early Scorpions, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Maiden, and even punk
bands influenced us greatly. As far as my influances well here you go Jimi
Hendrix, Tommy Bolin, Jeff Beck, Alan Holdsworth and also blues artists
like Johnny Winter, B. B. King, Albert King, etc. I was also a big fan
of Michael Schenker and Uli Roth.
9.WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST WHEN YOU
WRITE MUSIC?
-
It's a feel thing which is fueled by
the style of music your creating the insperation comes from life experiences
and visualizations.
10.WHICH SUBJECTS DO YOU LIKE TO HURT
THROUGH YOUR LYRICS? WHICH THINGS INSPIRE YOU IN WRITING LYRICS?
-
The insperation usually comes from
a simple idea then as you write it instantly becomes personal it's a very
strange process.
11.DO YOU LIKE TO WRITE ABOUT EVERYDAY
SITUATIONS OR DO YOU THINK THAT SOME TIMES FANTASY IS A NICE AND EASY WAY
OF EXPRESSING REALITY?ARE THERE ANY SECOND MEANINGS BEHIND YOUR LYRICS?
DO FANS HAVE TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES?
-
When I do write Lyrics they cover all
topics Matt was the main lyric writer for Liege Lord and like I said was
very into to whole medieval trip. Reguarding lyrics having double meanings
that's the fun thing about them it's like interpeting a painting
12.WHAT'S THIS ELEMENT THAT MADE YOU
BESIDES BEING FAN OF THIS MUSIC ALSO TRY TO COMPOSE YOUR OWN?
-
That's actually is the number one reason
is to be a fan of the music other thing come into play later.
13.HOW DO YOU FIND THE METAL SCENE
OF AMERICA? IS IT INTERESTING? HAVE YOU HEARD ANY NEW UNDERGROUND BANDS
YOU FOUND INTERESTING AND WORTH TO BE MENTIONED?
-
As far as America is concerned we have
been slow getting back into metal the big appeal has been through the Internet
and various metal festivals, Power mad 2001, March Meltdown, Milwakie Metal
Fest etc. but we are still nowhere near the mass appeal like before or
as in other countries but it's picking up speed. New band sorry not to
many.
14.DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GREEK
METALHEADS? WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME FOR A LIVE SHOW HERE IN GREECE?
15.DO YOU LIKE READING BOOKS? WHICH
IS YOUR MOST BELOVED BOOK AND AUTHOR?
-
Yes here's a good one George Orwell's
"1984"
16.WHICH HERO WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE?
17.WOULD YOU LIKE TO COMPOSE
THE SOUNDTRACK FOR A MOVIE? IF YES WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
-
I've done a lot of that type of thing
and recently recorded and composed the music for the WWF's extreme football
league called the XFL broadcast in the US on national TV but a sci-fi movie
would be great.
18.IF YOU WEREN'T ABLE TO COMPOSE MUSIC
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD DO IN YOUR LIFE?
19.THANX FOR THE INTERVIEW. THE LAST
WORDS ARE YOURS.
-
I just like to say thanks to all our
fan especially in Greece and to you guys for the great line of questions
thanks again for listening
