Mama Kin is one of the
catchiest and most sincere rock 'n' rollers I've come across lately! And
guess what? The most amazing thing is that they improve demo after demo!
Surely a band you shouldn't lose if you are into sleazy, poser rock 'n'
roll. Chris, the man behind the band is here once again to clear some things
out to us...
1.FIRST OF ALL I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT'S NEW
AND WHAT HAS HAPPENED FROM THE RELEASE OF YOUR PREVIOUS DEMO TILL NOW...
Mainly, we’ve been focusing on playing live
here in Sweden. We’ve done two acoustic gigs playing Guns n Roses covers
which was very fun, but the biggest news this year is probably that we
have recruited another guitarist, Vinnie Santino. As a live act, we are
better than ever! And of course there are some new songs that we´re
planning on recording in a couple of months….
2.WELL, I THINK THAT THIS DEMO OF YOURS IS ONE
OF THE BEST, MOST IDEAL AND ELOQUENT REPRESENTATIONS OF ROCK 'N' ROLL MUSIC.
FURTHERMORE I THINK YOU ARE AT YOUR BEST AND THIS IS THE BEST DEMO OF YOURS
TILL NOW. HOWEVER, I'D LIKE TO KNOW THE CREATORS POINT OF VIEW...
We have evolved a lot this year and we are
definitely proud of the stuff we did on “Rock n Roll”. We managed to do
something different to both “Three Is Company” and “Party Time” without
losing the MAMA KIN feeling. We have a lot more to show ya!
3.HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO REVIVE SO PERFECTLY DIRTY,
POSER AND SLEAZY ROCK 'N' ROLL? THIS IS A GENRE THAT HAS BEEN DORMANT (I
DON'T WANT TO SAY DEAD) FOR THE
PAST DECADE. HOWEVER, YOUR SOUND IS EXTREMELY
FRESH AND ALTHOUGH YOU REMIND US OF GREAT BANDS, YOU REMAIN UNIQUE... HOW
IS THIS POSSIBLE? WHAT KIND OF PROCEDURE DO YOU FOLLOW WHILST COMPOSING?
I don´t follow any specific procedure
while writing. I listen to KISS (both 80´s & 70´s), Guns
n Roses, 70´s Alice Cooper and a lot of other bands from both decades.
We always try to play music that we would go out to buy ourselves, so I
guess that we are a mix of our influences, a cocktail of 80´s + 70´s
rock!
4.YOU HAVE ADDED A 4TH MEMBER TO THE LINE UP.
ANOTHER GUITARIST. SO, INTRODUCE HIM TO THE READERS. HAS HE PLAYED IN ANY
OTHER BANDS PREVIOUSLY? WHICH WERE THE REASONS THAT LED YOU TO THE DECISION
OF ADDING ONE MORE GUITAR? DO YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR SOUND HARDER, RICHER...WHAT?
When I recorded the second guitar I noticed
how great the two guitar parts sounded together. Something we would never
be able to capture live if we didn’t have a second guitarist. Vinnie played
with Eddie Arena in a thrash metal band called Havoc. We had thought about
adding a second guitarist for quite some time, but the problem is you can’t
just pick anyone. They have to be dedicated and know what it’s all about.
When Havoc stopped playing, Rixie and me gave him a call and he said yes
before we had finished the question…. We’ve been rehearsing a lot lately,
even done two gigs and it sounds kick ass! The main reason for adding a
guitarist was to get the sound more dynamic and we really succeeded in
that part.
5.YOU INSIST ON USING BAND PHOTOS AS A COVER ARTWORK.
WHY? WHY DON'T YOU PUT ANY DRAWINGS OR PICTURES OR SOMETHING ELSE? IS IT
BECAUSE YOU THINK THAT IMAGE IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT INGREDIENT FOR THIS
KIND OF MUSIC? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE FANS SHOULD ALSO SEE THAT YOU HAVE
A "SLEAZY AND DIRTY" APPEARANCE BESIDES JUST PLAYING THIS KIND OF MUSIC?
We want to show people that MAMA KIN is something
special. We want people to see the cover and go “oh shit, this ain´t
no MTV- radio- hype- play-shitty-on-purpose-shit!!” They are supposed to
see what kind of music we are into and save themselves the trouble of guessing.
If they´re into that kind of music they´re gonna listen to
it. And if they listen to it they´re gonna like it. Simple, and we
do look pretty damn good so why not!?!?
6.OK! I THINK IT'S TIME FOR THE LYRICS... BY THE
WAY, THE 3RD AND LAST SONG OF THIS DEMO IS CALLED "DEVIL DANCE" AND IT'S
MY FAVORITE! IT'S EXTREMELY GROOVY AND HAS VERY CATCHY RIFFS!!! I LOVE
IT AND IT'S INDEED A DEVIL DANCE. THERE IS AN INTRO... A MAN CONDEMNING
HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL MUSIC. WHERE DID YOU TAKE THIS SPEECH FROM?
The man condemning rock music was something
I found on the internet. Don´t know what it is actually… But I do
know it´s a real preacher who´s saying it sometime in the 70´s…
The lyrics are about females as usual. “Rock n Roll” is about those kind
of girls that are teasers. The kind that asks you for drinks and use your
urge for sex against you.. “Stick it out” is about the female booty. I´m
a big fan of it, so I wrote a song…. “Devil dance” is about a guy entering
a bad relationship.
7.HAS ANY LABEL CONTACTED YOU TILL NOW? I AM REALLY
CURIOUS AND I CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT'S POSSIBLE A BAND LIKE YOU NOT TO
BE SIGNED YET... DO YOU LOOK FOR SOME SPECIFIC STANDARDS IN ORDER TO SIGN
WITH A LABEL? WITH WHICH CRITERIA AND TERMS ARE YOU WILLING TO ACCEPT AN
OFFER?
Of course we look for specific standards.
We know we´re special and anything just won't do. When we´ll
finish our new recording we´ll concentrate more on getting a deal.
We need to know that the label who is representing us is dedicated to us
in terms of hooking us up with tours, advertising and stuff like that.
Anyone can get a record deal, but it doesn’t matter if the record company
won't do anything for you..
8.WHICH ARE THE AMBITIONS AND DREAMS YOU WANT
TO MAKE TRUE THROUGH MAMA KIN?
We want to live off our music. We don´t
have to drive around in limo´s and have millions, just enough to
pay the rent and eat. The important thing is to kick ass, go around the
world and play rock.
9.DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS? ARE THERE
ANY DISCUSSIONS FOR ANY LIVE APPEARANCES OVER THERE?
I´m not exactly sure what you mean about
“over there” but we´ll play anywhere as long as we can afford the
trip. We could go on a world tour tomorrow if someone paid for it!

11.WHICH IS THE MOST CHARACTERISTIC EMOTION, IDEA
AND IMAGE THAT PASSES FROM YOUR MIND AND YOU THINK REPRESENT THE MAIN ESSENCE
OF ROCK 'N' ROLL?
I guess you could say the main topic of “Rock
n Roll” is girls. We meet a lot of different girls when we´re out
partying and I love writing about it. Good girls, bad girls, smart girls,
stupid girls… “Rock n Roll” is about the bad girls. The kind of girls that
have total control over you instead of the other way around. Guys often
think that they’re the ones in control but they seldom are…
12.IF YOU COULD BE SOMEONE ELSE FOR A DAY, JUST
TO SEE THINGS AND LIFE FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
