MASS
INFECTION
Mass Infection is a name
that I am sure you will get to hear a lot in the future. As for now, the
guys recorded a great demo titled "Believe The Lie" and they are presented
here talking about that and about the band's achievements and goals. They
are an uprising star. Check them out!
1.FIRST OF ALL POINT OUT THE MOST
IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY AND INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO THE
READERS...
The band formed in January ‘03
with the intention to play thrash/ death metal. We have participated in
several live performances, most of them with the current line-up, which
is George (guitar & vocals), Nick (guitar), Kostas (bass) and Chris
(Drums). During August ‘03 we recorded our first demo-cd, named “Believe
the Lie”. We had very good reviews from several magazines, fanzines and
webzines. Generally, the response to the demo was very good and encouraging
for us.
2.YOUR MUSIC HAS A PERFECT BALANCE
BETWEEN THRASH AND DEATH METAL. HOW DID THIS BLENDING OCCUR? WHICH ARE
YOUR INFLUENCES? NAME SOME OF THE ALBUMS RELEASED IN2003 THAT YOU REALLY
LIKED.
That balance comes from our influences.
It wasn’t something we tried to achieve. All of us love bands like Death,
Kreator, Morbid Angel, Sepultura (old mostly) and stuff like that. Some
great albums released in 2003 are: Morbid Angel-“Heretic”, Dream Theater-“Train
of Thought”, Arch Enemy-“Anthems of Rebellion”, Nevermore-“Enemies of Reality”.
All of them are incredible albums and surely some of the best for the last
year.
3.YOU RECORDED THE DEMO IN NEMESIS
STUDIOS, WHICH AREIN KAVALA, A CITY FAR AWAY FROM WHERE YOU LIVE. WHYDID
YOU DECIDE TO GO THERE AND NOT TO A STUDIO INATHENS THAT IS CLOSER? I'VE
NOTICED THAT NEMESIS OFFER GREAT PRODUCTIONS. ARE YOU SATISFIED AFTER ALL?
WHERE WILL YOU RECORD YOUR NEXT WORK?
We had heard very good things about
it. Especially from Zion (Crossover). Also, we too had noticed that every
work coming from Nemesis studios has a very good sound! We didn’t want
to go to a studio that we didn’t had a clue about. We are completely satisfied
with the production. To be honest, we didn’t expect such a good sound!
Also the owner of the Nemesis studios, Tasos Karapapazoglou, is a really
great guy to work with! Although it’s too soon, I would dare to say that
there we will record our next work too!
4.YOU SAY IN YOUR BIO THAT YOU WON'T
SEND THE DEMO TO LABELS. WHY? ARE YOU PREPARING A BETTER ONE TO SEND?WITH
WHAT CRITERIA WILL YOU SELECT A LABEL?
Not exactly. We said that-until
now-we haven’t send our demo to labels. And it’s true. But we didn’t mean
that we won’t! We just have some things to take care first. It’s in our
plans to seek for a label. Trust from both sides is one of the main criteria
to select a label. Also we want a reliable and understanding, to our music
and needs, label.
5.WHERE ARE YOUR LYRICS REFERRING TO
AND HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY FOR YOU? WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE LYRICS
AND WHAT CAN TAKE THE INSPIRATION AWAY FROM YOU?
Lyrics are very important for us.
A song is never good enough without good lyrics. Sometimes, we have only
lyrics completed and as we read them we come up with the music. Generally,
our lyrics refer to the weaknesses of the human race. Self-destruction,
greed, deceit are characteristics of the human race and so our lyrics refer
to them. The inspiration comes from everywhere. The world isn’t perfect,
and that’s what we use as inspiration. If we ever be so lucky(?) to live
in a perfect world, we'd probably be without inspiration! For now, I don’t
think there’s a possibility for that to come true. So, our inspiration
won’t go away!
6.HOW DIFFICULT IS FOR A BAND
THAT LIVES SO FAR AWAY FROM THE CENTRE OF DECISIONS TO KEEP ON GOING? WHAT
SACRIFICES HAVE TO BE MADE?
Sometimes it gets really difficult.
But if you are dedicated to your music and you believe in yourself there’s
nothing that knocks you down. To make some sacrifices is something natural.
Mostly, you have to give plenty of your time and your money. But those
sacrifices are which making the bonds between the members of a band stronger.
7.DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS?
YOU HAVEALREADY DONE SOME. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR LIVE EXPERIENCESWITH US?
We want to play as many live as
we can everywhere in Greece. At this time there’s no certain plans though.
All our live experiences were very good and very important for us. We have
played with some of the best underground Greek bands such as Crossover,
Inveracity, Ravencult, Carnal Redemption… I think that there’s an underground
scene that soon will rise up! There are many-really-good bands who deserve
to be noticed.
8.WHICH IS, ACCORDING TO YOU, YOUR
BEST AND WHICH YOUR WORST ELEMENT. WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU NEED FURTHER
IMPROVEMENT?
That’s a hard one! Our best element
would be our compositions. Our worst element would be our little-so far-experience
concerning live performances. But that’s something which comes in time.
To improve ourselves is one of our main goals. We always try to do our
best. Either it has to do with composing either performing our material.
9.IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT
WOULD IT BE? IFIT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
I think that our music can express
more than one emotions. Everyone who listens to it may feel different.
For me it’s mainly anger. If it was a painting it would show something
dark and chaotic from which rises a man in a higher state of mind. A state
of total knowledge.
10.IF YOU HAD A PROPOSAL TO DO A VIDEOCLIP,
WHICH SONG OF YOURS WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND HOW DO YOU
IMAGINE IT TO BE?
It would be our song “Feeding the
Machine” and it would be great to have some scenes of the movie “The Matrix”.
Especially the first one. The action of the movie is a great combination
with the aggressiveness of our song and the Matrix’s concept is similar
to the song’s lyrics. I can’t think something better than that right now.
11.IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO TRAVEL
BACK IN TIME, WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT
AND WHY?
I would travel about 2500-3000
years ago to see the great ancient civilisations, such as the ancient Greeks
and the ancient Egyptians. It would be interesting to see their culture,
their technological achievements and all the things that made them so great.
12.LET'S SUPPOSE THAT WE LIVE IN A
WORLD WITHOUT MUSIC. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN SUCH A CASE?
A world without music?! That’s
what I call “real hell”! Well, I would try to invent it. If that didn’t
work, I would pay someone to invent it for me! That would work for sure!
13.IF YOU WERE A FLY, WHERE WOULD YOU
LIKE TO BE AND WHY?
This question makes a rhyme you
know! I certainly won’t like to be a fly, but if I had to be one I would
like to be in the late 80’s in Florida to see those huge Death metal bands
like Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse etc. in their beginning.
I would fly to their rehearsal rooms without being noticed. That would
be a great experience!
14.IN WHICH MOVIE SOUNDTRACK WOULD
YOU LIKE TO HAVETAKEN PART OR HAVE COMPOSED?
I would say “Lord of the Rings”,
“The Matrix” and “Braveheart”. They are my three favourites. “Lord of the
Rings” and “Braveheart” have excellent soundtracks, so I would like to
have composed some of the music. And as I said it would be great to have
our song “Feeding the Machine” in the soundtrack of “The Matrix”! Yeah!
15.THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO ASK
YOU ANYTHING ANDYOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
I don’t think so. Thank you for
the interview, it was our honour to be in the pages of “Behind the Veil”!
