Damn!This is absolutely frustrating!
Outrageous! These poor guys have to file a law suite... Can you even imagine
that bands with the names ENTOMBED and SLAYER exist? What does this mean?
That these guys from Holland couldn't name their band after those names...Impossible!

1.DAY ONE TILL TODAY. FILL US IN
REGARDING THE BAND HISTORY. HOW WHERE OBTUSE CREATED?
Bass player Jurjen started the
whole thing. There was no musical chemistry anymore, so it was better to
quit. We grew apart, musically. But there are definitely no hard feelings
at all! Jurjen even helped Katafalk with a show in Heerenveen Holland,
despite his bald head… He wouldn't have done that if we hated eachother
you know. We are still brothers in metal, bonded by blood, side by side,
defenders of the faith, like London leather boys!
2.WHAT DOES OBTUSE MEAN IN GENERAL
AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU IN SPECIFIC? HOW WAS THE CHOICE MADE?
Obtuse means something like rude.
And we're rude as hell cause we beat up posers every Saturday night. We
wrote down a lot of names. In the end we had to choose between two cool
names. So we tossed a coin and Obtuse won. We got it from the Entombed
song ‘Fractures.’ Which is on their amazing ‘Morningstar’ album. We all
think it’s a cool name for our band. But we would rather call the band
Entombed, but then we found out there was already a band with that name.
Fuckin’ Swedish! We also thought about Slayer, but…
3.I READ IN YOUR BIO THAT SOME MEMBERS
OF OBTUSE WERE IN KATAFALK. WHY DID THEY LEAVE? DID THEY HAVE MUSICAL DIFFERENCIES,
EXPERIMENT IN DIFFERENT PATHS?
Yeah, like we said in the first
question, there was no musical chemistry anymore. By the way, we are all
ex Katafalk members. There is definitely a difference between Obtuse and
Katafalk, otherwise we wouldn't have leave that band. We think Obtuse sounds
less traditional. There is more room for experiment. We use other song
stuctures. We are also more grindcore orientated. That’s one of the reasons
we label Obtuse “More Than Grind.”
4.WE SEE IN YOUR COVER SOME CRUSHED
CARS. WHAT'S THE CONNECTION? IS IT CONNECTED WITH THE LYRICS OR DO YOU
WANT TO SYMBOLIZE THE POWER AND STRENGTH OF YOUR MUSIC?
There is no connection between
the lyrics and the cover. We just like East European cars, as well as those
huge American cars. And we all love the Dukes of Hazzard, Yeeeehaaaawwwww!!!!!
If you don’t like Them Dukes, you suck!!! The car on our cover has something
powerfull, like a tank, but then peacefull. It fullfilled its duty. It’s
beautifull in it’s uglyness.
5.WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN WRITING LYRICS?
REAL LIFE OR FANTASY? DO YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO GET THE IDEAS OF THEIR OWN
OR DO YOU THINK THAT THE MEANINGS ARE CLEAR?
The meanings are pretty clean I
think, or else you’re just plain stupid! It’s all about real life, frustration
and hatred. We don’t fuck corpses. It gives such a mess. At least not at
daytime.
6.WHICH ARE YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES?
Too many to mention, actually.
But to give you an idea: Discordance Axis, Charles Bukowski, Them Dukes,
pretty woman, Roy Orbinson, girls with Slayer shirts, beer, long walks
in the park, Venom, The Crown, Entombed, The Accused, Death, a certain
orange dodge charger, Exodus, Marco v/d velde, Tony Laureano, Sandoval,
Tomas Haake, Sean Reinert, Tool, Misery Index, Primus, Frank Zappa, Tom
Waits, Leonard Cohen, Status Quo, Iron Maiden, Dillinger Escape Plan,
Scott Ian, Ralph Spight, Metallica (new!!!), Immolation, Attitude Adjustment,
Heresy, Terrorizer, Crass, Nasum, Marduk, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin,
Rainbow, Stryper, Hate eternal, Europe, Bon Jovi, Andre Hazes, Revolver,
Gluecifer, Zeke!, a lot of band on Relapse, satan, tv7, the dictionary,
the local supermarket, farts. Basically the whole (extreme) rock music.
Basically we are influenced by death, thrash, black, hardcore, punk, stoner,
noise, and of course… GRIND!!!
7.HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THE PHENOMENON
THAT NOWADAYS THE BANDS FROM HOLLAND BELONG TOT HE ATMOSPHERIC METAL OR
THE EXTREME METAL SCENE? WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE CLASSIC HEAVY METAL?
We don’t care what kind of music
other bands play. Just play whatever you want, who cares. As long as you
buy our cd. And there are still some metal dinosaurs left here. Like Vortex
for example. They are still very metal and fanatic like a 16 year old.
Very cool. But those so called atmospheric bands can fuck off and die,
if they want… The extreme metal scene in Holland is doing very well, and
that’s good. Especially for such a small country. Check out My Minds Mine,
Shikari, Seizure, Inhume, Last Days of Humanity, Cantara, God Dethroned,
Katafalk, Aversion, Salacious Gods, Centurian, Pyaemia, Severe Torture,
Campus, Ortokvlargh, But also bands like Peter Pan Speedrock are really
great. Groningen is really a rock city!
8.HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO COMBINE SO
DIFFERENT MUSIC GENRES? FROM GRIND TO CORE AND ALL THAT FILLED WITH CLASSIC
HEAVY METAL?
Because we are genious! No seriously,
cause we are very old and have a long history in metal. And disco. It all
comes very natural. Wait ‘till you hear our new stuff!
9.WHICH WERE THE REACTIONS OF THE MAGAZINES,
ZINES, FANS AND LABELS ON YOUR LATEST CD? ARE YOU UNDER NEGOTIATIONS WITH
ANY LABELS AT THE MOMENT?
The reactions are very positive.
All two of them, haha! No seriously, the reactions are great. And there
are some interests from labels.
10.WHICH WILL BE YOUR NEXT STEP? WHAT
DO YOU AIM? A CONTRACT, A FULL LENGTH ALBUM, A TOUR?
World domination!!! A spiderman
autograph, an orange 1969 dodge charger and supporting Stryper on their
world tour. Ride our bikes like Manowar.
11.WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WEREN'T
ABLE TO COMPOSE AND PLAY MUSIC?
Trying to compose and play music
perhaps??? Wokkel would paint and worship satan, Martin would beat up more
posers than he already does and Jurjen would sit on his couch and drink
becks all day.
12.WHICH BOOK YOU LOVE A LOT AND YOU'D

TERRORISM?
We only like extreme noise terrorism.
All extremists are fucking poofter coward son of a bitches. And their mom’s
are ugly as shit. But we hate tree huggres as well.
14.IF YOU HAD THE ABILITY TO CHANGE
SOMETHING IN THE WORLD WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
To see satan’s resurrection here
on earth. Spreading darkness and squirt impure semen into girls with Slayer
shirts. Bring uncle Jesse and Boss Hogg back from the dead. Of course we
would “love to change the world, but we don’t know what to do, so we leave
it all up to you…” The Accused / then years after.
