Phil Hansen
Hmm this is a really thought provoking interview and I can really see Phil Hansen's point of view in most cases. Read the interview and you'll agree with me. I'm sure! Don't we all feel the same more or less when we are confronted with the real, ugly face of life?

1.FIRST OF ALL, I’D LIKE YOU TO TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR AIMS…
Well, I have a lot of projects that I work on, different styles of music, mostly underground metal. I'm a big supporter of all genres of
underground music. I have a new web site I'm working on that will probably be up by the time you get this interview back (BlastFiend.com). It'll have reviews, interviews, promotional info for bands and hopefully a strong community for people who are into the same types of music to come together and make new friends and contacts. I have a wife and a baby boy and we live just like everyone else, trying to get by in life one day at a time. It's not easy and there is a lot more I would like to be doing so I just try to do as much as I can with what I have to work with, and slowly expand on my dreams and talents. I'm an Atheist and also an activist informing people of the lies and crimes that the American government commits every day. I'm really into spreading the word on these injustices that are happening in the world. In my spare time I play a little music and drink a few cold beers, maybe watch a movie, throw some meat on the grill, or play PC video games!

2."GET A JOB" IS AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR SONG WITH ONLY SOME GREAT CLEAN VOCALS ACCOMPANYING IT. ALTHOUGH IT’S SIMPLE IN ITS STRUCTURE IT HAS A REALLY NICE MELODY AND IT STICKS IN YOUR MIND. DO YOU AGREE? WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ON THAT? WHICH MUSICIANS HAVE, LET’S SAY, "GUIDED" YOU TOWARDS THIS MUSICAL DIRECTION?

Yeah, I like the song, it's kind of catchy and has a message behind it, maybe not one people would think is a correct or a nice point of view, but I really don't give a fuck about what people think. It could have been a lot cleaner and better produced, but it was recorded on a little 4 track back in 2002, and at the time I didn't know shit about recording and sound reinforcement. I hear all the mistakes in it, but for what it is, it's kind of a cool little song. I listen to a lot of classic guitar music, stuff like classical, blues, classic rock, metal, etc. As far as the acoustic guitar goes, I don't worry about "keepin' it real" or being "trOO to the underground". All the acoustic stuff I write is just for the hell of it and mostly tells a story of something I went through. I feel that acoustic music is the best way to express these things because you can almost clearly hear what I'm trying to say. Musicians that guide me acoustically? Hmmmm... I'm not sure that I listen to too much pure acoustic stuff that I know the musician names or anything, but maybe stuff like the Eagles, Zeppelin, SRV, Mazzy Star, Steve Miller, and a shit load of others. Mostly I try to play things on acoustic which weren't meant to be played. "Get A Job" is just simple strumming that carries a good vocal tune, no fire works or anything amazing, but it's got a little boogie to it, if you know what I mean... I wouldn't say that this is my natural musical direction, because I have no plans to do much of that type of music. One day I may complete an album of all the songs I wrote over the last 10 years, but it would have to be a big budget production, something that is not in my means at this time. I would want to get the highest standard of recording, mastering and packaging, if I was going to be doing something like that. Until then, I will have the Album in my head only.
3.RECENTLY YOU HAVE PARTICIPATED IN A COMPILATION CD BY STEVIE HAYES LABEL CALLED "UNCONSTITUTIONALISM IN THE USA". TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT IT. WHICH OTHER BANDS DID YOU LIKE FROM THIS COMPILATION?
I don't know too much about it really, I have been so busy trying to live and make things happen that I have neglected a lot of things. I really didn't expect anyone to even notice my little song, I figured it would be ignored! haha I haven't really participated in the comp too much other than sending a song for it. I know that's not cool and I should be more involved, but I've just had way too much crap to deal with over the last 6 months or more. So, I do apologize to who ever actually cares... hahah. I haven't heard any of the other bands yet, but it's only a matter of time before I check it out. Sorry guys, no offence!
4.WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN THIS SONG TO REPRESENT YOU IN THIS COMPILATION AND WHY DO YOU PARTICIPATE WITH ONE SONG ONLY?
Well, I been hommies with Stevie Hayes for a few years already, and we work together on projects and what not. He asked me if I wanted to be on his comp, so I threw something at him that was me, expressing my constitutional right to speak what I feel. "Freedom Of Speech"! That is a right they will try to take away from us, just like they are trying to do now by passing bills like the patriot act 1 and 2. It's sick how the system works, and our forefathers are probably rolling over in their graves as we speak. Read the deceleration of independence and tell me that we don't have the right to speak against the government. People have their heads up their asses and the simple truth is that the government works for the people, if we don't like what they are up to, it is our duty to over throw the government and set up a better system. We have some of the smartest people in the world in America and we still can't find a solution to all this bull shit? It's fucked up! I only sent one song because I thought I was only supposed to send one song.
5.FILL US IN ON YOUR RELEASES AND POINT OUT THE MAIN DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES AMONG THEM. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR A NEW RELEASE? IF YES, GIVE US SOME INFO…
So far I have released a Techno Death Grind Album Called Rotten Anal Enema. It didn't go too far, and I'm not sure any label would want to re-release it, but you never know. I have a new album that I'm working on now that is more of a Death Metal - Gore Grind Album. I'm doing all the recording and mixing myself, and it's taking a long time! I still haven't tracked the vocals, but everything thing else is finished, like the album art and what not. I got a really cool artist (Bruce Rivard) to do the art and it's pretty sick. I still don't have a band name for it yet, but I have a few ideas stirring in my brain. It's really heavy and has a pretty clean production while maintaining a good supply of brutality. You can expect nice guitar rhythm riffage along with excellent soaring guitar solos. Thick bass lines and mid paced to blasting drum work thanks to my good buddy stevie hayes on drums. It will be a mix between an Activist putting the word out and horror, gore, sick and funny lyrics all mixed up on the album. So, it'll have a message yet still be fun and sick. After that I'll be working on a second Rotten Anal Enema album, which I'm sure will make it to a label release, because I've gotten a lot better at what I am doing, and it's going to blow minds. My plans are to take my guitar playing to the next level over the next year and do all the things that I have been putting off, like learning new ways to make the guitar sing. And soon I will be putting together a live DM - Grind act called "Blood Glutton" as soonn as I get a complete line up. I'll have a new song recorded for an up coming comp cd-r I'm putting together called ...Or Give Me Death, but of course for right now I'll be playing all the instruments and doing all the vocals. Until I get some fellow musicians to complete the band, I'll be writing all the songs by myself, as usual. That's about it right now.
6.WHAT ABOUT THE LYRICAL CONTENT OF YOUR SONGS? ARE THEY FUNNY OR DO YOU AIM TO "STIGMATIZE" SERIOUS SOCIAL PROBLEMS THROUGH A LIGHTER POINT OF VIEW? TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT THEM. WHICH ARE YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION?
The song is a true store about an experience I had. My car broke down and I found my self riding the city bus to work every day for months. A two hour ride there and a two hour ride back home, it really sucked I had to spend so much time getting back and forth to work just to keep them bills paid and some money in my pocket. Well, on the bus I would see all kinds of freaks and bums, and fuck faces. People talking to themselves, some people being loud and stupid. It was really annoying. So, one day I'm going to work and this dunk black hobo gets on the bus and is falling over and stinks like shit. He threw up all over the bus and was sitting behind me and I could feel the spray of vomit hitting the back of my seat and the stench of beer and bile hit the air. It stunk so bad the bus driver pulled over down the street and called another bus to come. There were also gays and these wiggers asking me for cigarettes all the time. I had to stop giving them away because there were so many people hitting me up for smokes and spare change that I would be out by the time I took the bus to go back home from work. These guys... "Yo Yo Yo, you got a smoke man?" "Say man can you spare some change?" with some bull shit story to go with it like if I really gave a fuck about these lies to scam money from decent people so that they could go out and buy some beer or crack rock. I would see people smoking crack at the bus stop or under bridges, fucking ghetto. It was total bull shit and it really pissed me off so that's why I wrote that song. It wasn't funny at the time, but most people find it funny because not only is it true, but these kind of things piss them off too, they just don't have the balls to say it. They are too busy trying to be a kiss ass to society and fit in by conforming to the views of these fucking idiots they see on tv like Ricki Lake, and Dr. Phil. The song definitely goes against the grain of our current socially correct thinking that has been pushed on us to act and think according to a "correct" point of view. But, keep in mind that the song is not directed to people who are unemployed, I myself have been unemployed many times... It's directed to these fucking leaches of society that bum, beg and "barrow" on street corners and are just looking for a hand out. People have hard times, but these fucking ghetto vampires don't want to head over to the labor hall and work, they would rather beg people for spare change and smokes so they can buy some 40's and drink them in abandoned buildings, under bridges, in dumpsters, etc. etc. etc...
7.ARE YOU SATISFIED BY THE FEEDBACK YOU’VE GOT SO FAR FROM THE PRESS AND FANS? WHAT WAS THE MOST FLATTERING AND WHAT WAS THE WORST COMMENT YOU’VE READ?
I have fans? I haven't seen any press or fan feedback. I don't think there is any either... hahahah Seriously, if there is any feedback good or bad, let me know I would be interested in knowing about it haha. The only comment that I have heard of so far was the one in this interview where you say the song has a nice melody. The worse the comment the better I say, it makes me laugh my ass off when someone doesn't like what I am doing, even more so if it's because I offended them!
8.LET’S SUPPOSE THAT YOU WERE GIVEN THE CHANCE TO PRESENT AND REVIEW YOUR MUSIC. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY, TRYING TO BE AS OBJECTIVE AS POSSIBLE?
Crappy little song with funny lyrics that makes you almost want to sing along! One of the best worst songs of all times, even more so if you want to let the bigot inside you out and get rid of some of that pent up frustration of every day life and people who suck!
9.WHAT’S THE BEST AND WHAT’S THE WORST PART IN YOUR MUSIC, ACCORDING TO YOU?
The recording is poor although it doesn't sound as bad as a lot of the demos that are sent to me. It would be nice to have known then what I know now about recording and I would have thrown in a longer and better guitar solo at the end as well. Other then that it's what it is, like I said it's simple music with a little boogie to it. The best thing about it is that it's funny and most people find it amusing instead of getting pissed off about it.
10.DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS? DO YOU APPEAR ON YOUR OWN OR DO YOU HAVE ANY SESSION MUSICIANS WITH YOU?
Yeah I have played live a bunch of times with friends that insisted that I play. I don't like playing acoustic live because I like growling more than singing, but it has been a long time. I haven't played live in many many years, but if I did go back to playing live I would definitely have some guys playing with me. Another guitarist and some bass and drums would be nice. One day I'll probably do it, but not right now. It's too much work and I have too much to do at this time. It would have to be when there is no other music project going on. Most of my past live performances were with drummer Matt Cortez who I believe is now playing in the band Deity, from San Antonio Texas. We would show up at clubs and ask if we could play, most of the time we knew the other bands and they would want us to play. We would either play without a bass player or find someone who was talented enough to follow along without knowing the songs. We did weird shit sometimes like play acoustic misfits, which people seemed to really love. We would be drinking and be drunk before we left the stage. It was high energy stuff and the crowd would go nuts. I'm not limited to acoustic, I'm pretty good at playing heavy stuff too, so we would mix it up as much as possible to throw people off. Never got "BOOED" once... I also would play with my really good friends also from San Antonio TX, The Crystal Myth. They are an acoustic act who play gigs regularly around town, and also play most of the Pagan Pride Festivals in Texas. I never played live with those guys, but I helped them write a lot of songs, and we spent many an hour tweaking and jamming out together for the fun of it. Well, I take that back, we would play in public places in San Antonio, and we would not notice the crowd gathering around until the song(s) was over. Then the clapping starts and what not... And I also played a many street corner with different friends and people would throw dollar bills at us, silly stuff like that. Pretty much just to get out side and play, not so much to have people listening. It's fun to play out doors instead of being cooped up inside someone's smoky apartment or house...
11.IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT WOULD IT BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
Well musically depends on the song, because my acoustic music expresses how I feel at the time, whether it be sad, happy, angry, or love. "Get A Job" would be classified as humor to cure the anger though... Hmmmm.... it would be more of a movie, ever seen Return Of The Living Dead?
12.IF YOU COULD BE A FAMOUS PERSON FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD YOU BE AND WHICH PERIOD OF HIS/HER LIFE WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE A TASTE OF?
Probably Jim Morrison. I would like to have a taste of all the partying and good times, on and off the stage, but I could do without the bad times and death... Maybe also Glen Danzig - Misfits/Samhain era.
13.LET’S SUPPOSE THAT SUDDENLY ONE DAY ELECTRICITY CEASED TO EXIST. WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN TO EXTREME MUSIC? I DON’T THINK YOU’D FACE ANY REAL PROBLEMS, SINCE YOU PLAY WITH AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR…
Yeah I could live without electricity, but ummm it wouldn't be as much fun. You could drop me off in the woods in the middle of no where with a big knife, a carton of cigarettes, some booze and I would be just fine... But yeah I would still play acoustic death metal and growl like the devil...
14.THANK YOU! LEAVE A MESSAGE TO THE READERS…
GO TO WWW.BLASTFIEND.COM FOR YOUR EXTREME MUSIC NEEDS TO BE SATASFYED! 100% SUPPORT OF UNDERGROUND MUSIC.
If you have any questions or comments please send them to [email protected] or [email protected] and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Any record labels looking to release new music please contact me and we'll work something out! FUCK THE SYSTEM! Mainstream society is a sick and disgusting thing that promotes idiocy and is against our American rights. Lets all get to work on ending the "War On Drugs"! It is a sick plot to imprison our population, hold people down, keep them in the system, paying fines, fees and much much more. The only true winner in the "War On Drugs" is the law enforcement agencies who make billions of dollars every year putting drugs on the streets and then busting us for them. It's a double profit for them. So, lets help get our friends and family out of prison by fighting this sick injustice! Drug abuse is now recognized as a disease... Do they put people with cancer in prison? NO! We should be helping each other not keeping each other down! Also, you can refine hemp with the same process as they refine oil and you will get a clean burning fuel that would run any car with just a simple modification to the carburetor. Our gas prices would be 25 - 50 cents per gallon. And our oil prices are still rising! And why don't we use hemp? Because the oil corporations don't want to give those billions of dollars they make every year to the farmers (who would grow the hemp). So mark my words, when big corporation owns 100% of all farm land that's when hemp will be legalized... For now lets get the possession and use of drugs decriminalized. "Drug War" Victims should be compensated and pardoned for being sent to prison and put through so much trauma. They should receive a check every month just like VETS do! Fucking back woods government! And instead of sending people to prison, send them to rehab! Prison only turns them into real criminals instead of "reforming" them... That's all for now, thanks for the interview and keep on fighting for your rights!!!!
