PRIMAL
DAWN
This might prove to be
a very interesting and intriguing interview for you, not only because of
the various musical subjects we are dealing with but also because you will
find some really interesting tips on how to take care of your goats and
give them a good shave as well. Kidding of course but nevertheless this
is indeed a very interesting interview!
1.FIRST OF ALL, POINT OUT THE MOST
IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND’S HISTORY AND INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO THE
READERS.
-
Primal Dawn formed in late ’99 after
the demise of our old band, Evoulution’s End, which was more thrash in
style. Our first demo came out in early 2000. The next one
was not until early this year due to various line up and other problems,
but everything is back on track now. The euthanasia program has since
been re-released on Lithuania’s Atlintida productions as a split with Outrage
from Austria.
2.TELL US ABOUT YOUR BAND NAME. DO
YOU WANT TO SUGGEST IN A WAY THAT YOUR MUSIC IS A BIT PRIMITIVE AND HAS
SOME OLD SCHOOL BLACK METAL ELEMENTS? THE CHARACTERS IN YOUR LOGO REMINDED
ME A BIT OF MANOWAR’S LOGO…
-
Ha, well myself and Dave love Manowar,
the other two hate them. That’s probably where the comparison ends
though. Regarding the name, it refers to a more simple time, before
technology, humanity etc, hence something more pure. I guess in a
round about way it ties in with some of the social critiscism in our lyrics.
3.CONGRATULATIONS FOR “THE EUTHANASIA
PROGRAMME”! GREAT SONGS! TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT IT AND EXPLAIN WHAT
KIND OF PROCEDURE YOU FOLLOW WHILST COMPOSING SONGS.
-
Thanks for the compliments. I
know it sounds like a cliche, but basically we just wrote what came out.
We didn’t have anything particular in mind when writing the songs.
Our next CD will be slightly different, with more of a black metal influence
and shorter, faster songs. Better lyrics too.
4.WHY DID YOU SELECT TO RELEASE ONLY
3 SONGS? DON’T YOU HAVE ANY OTHER OR DO YOU THINK THAT THESE 3 ARE THE
MOST CHARACTERISTIC OF YOUR MUSICAL APPROACH?
-
Because we were not signed. Basically,
everybody is self-releasing their albums these days. It’s nothing
special to release an album anymore. We would rather keep that feeling
alive and do things the traditional way, keep doing demo’s/EP’s until we
move on to the next level.
5.WHY DID YOU TAKE PART IN THIS SPLIT
RELEASE? DO YOU THINK THAT SPLIT RELEASES HELP THE NEWCOMERS? IN WHICH
WAYS?
-
Split releases are benificial to new
bands. It is in the interest of the two other parties involved in
this to promote it aswell as us, so that will result in people who otherwise
wouldn’t have heard of us having access to our music.
5.WHERE WERE THESE 3 TRACKS RECORDED,
WHO WAS THE PRODUCER AND HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO RECORD THEM? ARE YOU
SATISFIED BY THE FINAL RESULT OR IS THERE SOMETHING YOU’D LIKE TO CHANGE
NOW?
-
We are satisfied for the most part
with them. Of course there are a few things we would change given
the chance, but things like that will always be there when you are working
against the clock. We recorded in county Meath in Ireland.
The producer was not a metaller, but has a good idea of how metal should
sound regardless. I think he did a very good job personally.
6.WHERE ARE YOUR LYRICS REFERRING TO?
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE LYRICS?
-
We have a lot of social commenty in
the lyrics and they can be political at times. We have come in for
a lot of critiscism from the more egalatarian elements of the metal scene
for some of them, “the cull” and “pull the trigger” for instance.
The lyrics on our next release I imagine will be no different in what they
are saying although they are more philosophical. More about basic
laws of nature, such as social darwinism and natural hirarchy.
7.WHICH ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
WILL YOU DO ANY LIVE SHOWS OR TOUR WITH OTHER BANDS?
-
We will keep gigging as we always do,
hopefully making it outside Ireland soon.
8.I FOUND A COMBINATION OF OLD SCHOOL
BLACK METAL WITH SOME A LA CRADLE OF FILTH TOUCHES IN YOUR MUSIC. WHICH
BANDS CAN BE FOUND AMONG YOUR INFLUENCES AND NAME SOME OF YOUR MOST BELOVED
ALBUMS.
-
Cradle of filth is an unusual reference,
I wouldn’t consider them an influence at all. Their first album was
ok when it came out. I guess our influences would be the obvious
ones, old Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, old Deicide, Dissection, Dark Throne,
Satyricon, Angelcorpse, old Mayhem, old Paradise Lost, Kreator, Sodom etc.
Newer influences coming from the likes of Allfather, Revenge, Axis of Advance,
Vomitor etc. Some of my personal favourite bands would include all the
above mentioned aswell as Kristallnacht, Ulver, Gontyna Kry, Nastrond,
Primordial, Graveland, Thunderbolt, Abigor, Blood Axis, Clannad, Vond,
Mortiis, Bathory, early Celtic Frost.
9.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE THAT
IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOUR MUSIC TO INTRIGUE HIS INTEREST? WHICH IS YOUR
MOST RECOGNIZABLE ELEMENT?
-
Hard to say, our new stuff is noticably
different to our recorded output. I guess fast, dark, extreme music with
philosophical, thought provoking lyrics.
10.IF YOU WERE A FLY, WHERE WOULD YOU
LIKE TO BE AND WHY?
-
Sitting on a nice, fresh piece of turd
because that’s what flies do.
11.DO YOU THINK GOD GOT SO FRIGHTENED
FROM WHAT HE CREATED THAT HE MOVED TO HEAVEN TO KEEP DISTANCE FROM HIS
CREATIONS? :))
-
Well, I don’t believe in god or anything
of that nature so I cant say. I reakon God would be having a good
laugh at us and possibly taking pride in some of us and feeling disgust
at others.
12.IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO TRAVEL
BACK IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO AND WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE?
-
So many things. I am a total
history nerd. That answer would depend completely on my mood, but
I guess to be part of a great conquering army like my ancestors the Gaels,
or else the Romans, Spartans …whoever.
13.WHAT TITLE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THIS
INTERVIEW?
-
Hmmm…maybe “Tips on how to shave your
goat”.
14.WHICH IS THE WILDEST, CRAZIEST THING
YOU'D LIKE TO BE ASKED?
-
Is shaving a goat similar to shaving
a llama?
15.THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO ASK
YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Nothing that springs to mind. Thanks
for the support and best of luck with your webzine.
